hello trooper. just found your thread today. love the boat. nice, tall gunwales for sure. you're making quick work out of that teardown, for sure.
im defiantly watching for updates. :)

...schedule 40 [ schedule 80 is much thinner walled stuff...]...
gt1m, i just noticed this, and had to say something.... on 1" pipe, sch 40 (also called "standard wall"), is thiner, being a bit more than an eighth inch (0.133"), and sch 80 (called "heavy wall") is the next size up, being 0.179". pipe wall is thicker as the schedule is higher...bigger is heavier. (im an industrial pipefitter/welder by trade)

Thanks Allen. I love her too, but would like her more if she was finished :)

Actualy I am having a blast working on the boat. I have a 4 day weekend coming up and looking forward to getting to work on her for more than 2 hrs at a time.

A fully fitted out marine 350 shouldn't be a problem with a wooden gantry/hoist.

I sure hope so!

Will be testing that theory out over new years weekend. Would this weekend but not sure the rear admiral will let me....

I lifted an old Chrysler 140 for a friend with mine. The damn thing was probably 400 pounds and not even a squeak. :D

Speaking of trying to stay dry.....rain was potential on our forcast for today.

I was worried about the way I have the 3 tarps connected, so had the Mrs pick me up a huge drop sheet for painting last night. Put it up in the dark.

It looked ok from what I could see.

After the rain hit today noticed the whole thing was sinking kinda low.....bailed about 20 gals of water off the roof.
Acutally kept the boat dry though. Went out this evening and tightened things up t o where I don't have any more sagging spots to collect water.

Here is what our yard looked like this evening, rained most ofd the morning, this was like 4-5 hours after the rain!

Have a question for the pros....once I sand the resin layer off the fiberglass in prep for the new glass, I need to keep that free from water until I get the new glass in place, correct?

So far I have been able to keep her dry, but who knows with the way it rains in the winters here...

Yep, poly and water are like oil and water, they don't mix.

Sure wish you could send some of that rain up here to Kennewick, Washington. It is sunny. Our high today is suppose to be 38, our low this morning was 17.

We have had less than a tenth of an inch of rain so far this month.

You were talkking about keeping the fiberglass dry in the bottom of the boat.

IF it does get wet, can it be dried out or is a guy just SOL?

You are rippin right through this one and looking good. I would bet the balsa core is under the engine too. If you are still wondering Bosch blades do fit the HF tool

It can be dried out... I'd probably give it a quick sanding again and vacuum...

bharness -

If you hold a towel up to this picture, you just might be able to collect some of this rain :) As you can see we got some more today

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I managed to get a little more done today, even though I am fighting a painful back - not restoration related, but hasn't been helping it.

Worked on getting the steering cable/wheel, gauges, and all electrical wiring out today. It gets down right warm under the green house I built!

I'd say this was an accidental fire waiting to happen....

Not cutting or grinding today, but I did get a good vacuum and sweeping done

Question...
My circular saw cut into the hull a little bit when taking the deck out. This is right up against the gunwhales. I planned on sanding this area then laying some glass down. I do not know enough about fiberglass to know if I just put a layer of CSM or if it needs 1708 Biax or both.

hey trooper. glad to see ya got the boat covered.
if your grass is anything like mine, all that water will have it growing out of control in no time....but mine still grows in our 'winter'.

yes, you will need 1708 for anything on the hull. you want the thickness and the strength.
when you're ready to get on it, start by grinding out about 3-4" or so, and alternate layers of 1708 and csm.
i use the 1.5oz csm.
one of the previous owners of my rig did the same thing when cutting out deck, but only patched the inside.
here's a few pics....
PICT2177.jpgPICT2191.jpgPICT2189.jpg

i wasnt sure if i was gonna get to it from inside, so i started grinding the outside.

you, however, should be able to get to the entire cut from the inside, and then patch it back with no problems.
there will probably be a few other, more experienced, ppl reply with better suggestions.

It gets down right warm under the green house I built! This is the typical way that most boat wiring looks after a few years of add-ons, changes and modifications...perfectly normal, but not necessarily safe or correct...

I'd say this was an accidental fire waiting to happen....Looks like someone tried to put way too much load off of one single power feed or some extremely old and brittle wiring...yep, might have needed a little Coast Guard Fire control assistance..., Good thing you are doing a complete resto, just imagine the peace of mind you will have when you finish, knowing every nook and cranny of this boat is safe.;)

I do not know enough about fiberglass to know if I just put a layer of CSM or if it needs 1708 Biax or both.Sand the area out to create a dished area, then lay in progressively larger layers of CSM and a final layer of 1708. If you break through the hull to the outside, just repeat from the out side and finally fair it in...see the sketch attached below. I'm sure someone else will jump in here and verify or correct as needed...

I'll keep you in my prayers for a quick and speedy healing of your back...
