BTW, the under deck shot shows how nice a job you've done w/ the stringers, gussets, bulkheads & deck......And bonus no foam leakage!

All looks great!

Troop you know everytime I look at that tank I just keep thinking how cool a rig would look painted like that! Especially if all you had to do is just sit back and watch them grand kids have at it!. By the way those mounts look built to take a beating once again nice job!!

Jb, i hadnt considered the torque, but you are right. I will be tabbing these in real good, if it cools down, or I get up early enough this weekend.

You going to clean them up afterwards? They were a mess just on the tank, they wouldbe covered head totoeif I letthem lose on the whole hull.

But I have to agree, it would look good and be different for sure.

Hmmm, maybe JDA can stitch you some tyvek suits to fit 'em, hooded of course. I think US child labor & OSHA health & safety laws prevent the domestic sale of child size tyvek suits:facepalm:

Yeah, liberal application of 1708 may be in order @ the mounts.

Wow, just been checkin out your progress, and you are crankin it out...way to go Troop...

I gotta wholeheartedly agree with JBC...the mounts need to do their part in keeping the engine torque at bay...so a liberal application of some layers of glass are definitely in order...

And I do love the paint job on the tank!

Thanks GT. will def be putting 1708 down on the mounts.

That tank all brighly colored, and no one but us reading this in here is typical of how I like to do things. It really was the grand daughter's idea, glad she aked to do it.

Hey troop,

I've been watching your thread for a while, but never posted. Love the gas tank.

Maybe now that GT is back, the weather will cooperate and we can get more work done. However, since he's back, we'll have to spend more time reading posts here on iboats. lol

Sea ya...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

This will impede my after work - boat work today....

DSC01187.jpg

I want to get the nib/nub/stickies removed from the motor mounts and the deck to hull joint I did over the weekend. Shouldn't be too much trouble, you will have to take my word for getting it done. See no sense in pics of that little progress. Also will round of the transition from deck to bilge and knock the foam plugs down so they are ready whenever I get to glassing again.

Opinions on whether or not to gelcoat the inside of the tank area before covering it up? Two layers of 1708/CSM in the bottom of it. I have a drain tube to put in so I can see if there is any leaking of the tank. I will keep that closed most of the time. If time permits tonight, I may get the wood ready for the but joint of the next deck section going in. I can't install the tank though till I get some more materials. I need a correct size anti-siphon tube...new hoses/clamps, grounding wire and last but not least...a good way to secure the tank. I was considering foam, but think the grandson had a better idea...some plastic blocks that will be bolted to the stringers/bulkheads...will look like a piece of angle going across the top of the tank edges. I want to use plastic, but if I cannot find any the right size may go with steel. There would of course be a layer of plastic between them and the tank. I'll draw some pics later to show what I mean.

Hope you all are having a cool week....stay hydrated...unless you are in Florida, stay dry :)

Actually, this is year is cool compared to last summer. We hit 100+ in late April Early May if I recall correctly... and I don't think it let up till September....Ask Frisco he was doing his boat then...I don't see how he got any glassing done at all.

Appreciate the offer on materials..I'm sure if I was closer I would take you up on it.

Back to the heat....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Finished sanding the nib/nubs etc...had a sander in my hand and decided to hit a few spots on the outside of hull...

Several reasons for wanting to do this...

This first spot, notice how much whiter it is in right hand side of the line that went to the speedo pickup? I had thought it was that way because someone had put gelcoat on half the boat after a repair...

I was using a used 80 grit pad on random orbit sander..both sides came off equal and easy...and it is super thin...Guessing it is paint?
DSC01189.jpg

This area, was to see what was under the brown...metal flake! and this reddish stripe...what the heck is this?
Tried to sand through it...started showing red under the primer that is under the white...

I have seen other Ebko's with this same stripe...so it was that way from factory...Any ideas on what that stuff is?

Hit the Cap too too see if it was the same...I really already knew it was...
DSC01190.jpg

Even though it was still 98 degrees...I couldn't take it...

Had to Glass!!!!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

if your tank filler neck is still an issue you could try and use your clamp from the top of the neck to the bottom of the tank to bend it down your half inch. or a hammer . its just aluminum

I realise it is a soft metal and should move rather easy....with my luck it would rip a hole in it...I'll put the doghouse around or something....haven't decided yet...thanks for the advise though...

That red stuff may be a tint added to the poly resin.I'm just tossing out possibilities here.Never seen anything quite like it.At first I thought is was antifoul paint but no way it's that.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I think that red stripe was laid down in the mold at the factory originally as an integral body stripe in the gelcoat. Or more accurately, after they sprayed the lower hull white gelcoat, they sprayed red gelcoat the red stripe's width higher on the mold. I don't remember, did the PO tell you he was the original owner or how many came before him. In the late 70's metal flake was fairly popular on boats, and VW dune buggy's as I remember.

Perhaps someone paid quite a bit to have the gelcoat shot brown to hide the metal flake, which in the late 80's thru now would date the hull's appearance. Or if it went unsold originally for a season or 2, the dealer or manufacturer may have done it.

The other thought I had RE: the metal flake, was the way the original mold was shot/filled w/ gel & fiberglass. I seem to remember reading somewhere that lots of manufacturers using chopped strand guns to shoot molds often recycled used material & shop floor cleanup debris as fillers & stuff in the gun's hopper. Chopped glass has a shimmer to it anyway, so maybe that too.......

RickR: How'd you adhere that insulation blanket to the interior of your doghouse?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Glassin work looks good as always, even if it is like a million degrees...

Yep, the red stripe looks like something the factory would have put in the mold first to mark off the water line...mine had something similar, sort of as a pinstripe between colors...

Another idea for adding some insulation between the fuel tank and the hull/straps/clamps, is to use some thick, cheap black rubber floor mats, cut into strips...

Just a note of caution on beating on aluminum...some of it is 'hardened' and could crack if deformed...sometimes the hardening comes from where it is welded or it could be treated that way from the foundry...

Couple of good possibilities for adhering the insulation are exterior grade contact cement or exterior grade carpet glue...

And from the looks of the Brown over the metal-flake, seems more like a paint job from what I can tell due to the primer color under the brown...not sure, but I don't think you would use a primer, if you were re-gel-coating...
