The roller spot ground out....and yes I am grinding in bare feet..
Still more to go, but the heat/humidity is making it tough to stay out longer than 30 mins at a time...3 or 4 layers of roving that is just flaking off...spot is about 15" x 10"...I feel like I will be removing this all over the hull if I have to find some that is still sticking...

Troop, I am channeling good thoughts your way in the hopes that these are just some isolated spots on the hull...

I just poured myself in from about 15 minutes out in the heat and I gotta say, it is stifling! Be extra careful...and don't forget why your feet are itching tonight...:p

Keep up the good fight!

I had to wear my shade safety glasses...white with lots of sun...hurted my eyes..

and I am starting to regret working barefoot when grinding glass.....

Made a video to show you all what I am up against...the more I grind...the more flaking I find...
So far I am about 3/8" to 1/2" deep...when I get to the roving it seems to be OK.....how far do I have to chase the flaking? I also assume I need to be feathering this out quite abit...I started big but have already approached the feathering I started...think I will need to go out another 3" or so on each edge...but then the flaking will start again...confused.....

Troop I have no experience with fiberglass but would it be a good idea to sand in various spots on the hull to see if this for the lack of a better term cancer is an issue on the entire hull so you know what your up against? If it it does keep up like this your gonna be into more work on the outside than on the inside! And by the way thanx for the education so far.

Man Troop I sure hope that flaking stops at some point. You would think there was enough grinding on the inside.. I know your prolly sick of it.. Hang in there !
Btw there is no sound on the vid maybe you can dub in some Pink Floyd or something . And carefull with the grinder . A little closer and you wont have to worry about those KS anymore..:D

FF I actually have spots all over I need to address anyways....so we will see...I sure hope it doesnt turn into the entire hull...

Not sure what happened to the audio..it was there until I exported the vid....Pink Floyd....you know I like that....I think "Marooned" might be fitting...as for the closeness...I was thinking the same thing while I was doing the grinding...

The flip was great. Looked like it was a easy.

As far as the woven roven goes, there should be NO delamination in the repair area. If you don't remove it the new glass will fail.
I don't know what it is about the roven, but I have seen this problem in alot of boats. It seams like it fails alot.
You need to keep grinding untill you find solid glass. Just remember, it's fiberglass and it can be fixed.
I would also use the 1708 in the repairs. CSM dosn't have that much strengh compared to 1708.. 1708 is a structural glass.

Hope you don't find alot of damage. Hope your feeling better.

yes the flip went much better than I thought it would...I better get a new grinder then....if I have to find all the loose roving...I swear who ever put it in used a mix of mud in their resin!

as for the 1708, WoG already it me up about that...going to grind some of what I did this morning and put a couple layers of 1708 on it..WoG suggested 2 layers of each, CSM...CSM..1708...1708...repeat till I get to correct height....going to need another 30 gallons of resin if I have to do the entire hull like that :( and I do not have near enough 1708 left to do that either....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Hey Troop ...... I felt the same way that you do when I removed an old patch from the keel and found that all of the wood was rotted. I wanted to take a sledge to mine as well. Woody walked me thru it and I removed the rot and replaced it with all new wood. Set me back about a week but wasn't as bad as it seemed at the time. It sucks that it is going to cause more work for you but you have a lot of great glass guys here to walk you thru it. You will be looking back at it sooner then you think and saying that it wasn't that bad. Good luck with it and hang in there .... you're doing a great job.

Hey troop, sorry to see your hull problems.

I watched your video. Looks like you are getting at the spots pretty good. Now what concerns me is your camera. It didn't look like it was very far away and you were spitting out a lot of FG dust.

Sea ya.

Troop, Decker is 100% correct. Grind till flaking stops and good glass apears. I can't imagine the entire hull being this way but...If it is...Well it's gunna be a lot of grindin and glassin and you WILL be a PRO when you're Done!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I think the starcraft guys have cast an evil glass boat spell on all of us...

My hull is crooked; decker is fighting battles with his hull; Bear's boat frustrated him to the point that he threw it in a landfill, S.P.'s paint gun won't work but he is fighting through it, and now your hull is flaking away... Uggh...

Time for some better mojo...

Also, my transom did a very similar thing when I was grinding around the old OMC transom opening. It just kept flaking away.. Ultimately, I took it all out and just re-glassed the back of the transom. You will tend to think that you are causing the flaking with the grinder. .. I remember thinking "that was fine until I put my grinder on it, so should I just leave it alone?" However, I eventually got to good glass and you will too.

Sorry for the set-back.... Feel your pain.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Oh Boy...I sure hope I don't have to grind the whole hull away! That will look kind of odd...an upside down deck connected to stringers and bulkheads...with foam and a gas tank sitting on top roflmao!!

I won't be doing any grinding till I can get a new zuit suit...think I threw the last ones I had away....

Soo...I found 3 pieces of 120 grit pads that fit my DA sander....but didn't want to use the DA...just wrapped a piece around my sanding block and started testing the waters...

I started out on the corner where there was some cracking evident...
DSC01338.jpg

the dark areas is where there was some filler...and a noticeable gap...sure that is where the cracks were...I really don't think there is any gelcoat on this hull...very thin white, I assume is paint...tan color... then black paint type stuff then this offwhite/green primer looking stuff...then glass... Do I need to go to glass or just till it is all smooth?
DSC01339.jpg

Just checking out a few spots to see if any is gel coat...this came off pretty easy...this is next to keel and that bright white I showed you yesterday....
DSC01340.jpg

Another spot...between the bright white and white..near transom....
DSC01341.jpg

This will need to be ground out... my little triangle shaped blocks are behind this area....

Yes we do need some better mojo!

was a tough weekend huh? When I first saw Bear's pic in the dump..I thought he was just playing a joke...making fun of the hull you threw out..shees can't beleive he did that...but can understand it....

You are spot on for what I was thinking...that I was causing the flaking with the grinder...
