Re: 79 SS18 Project

OK folks, made some progress on the electrical with a Multimeter and some guidance from SilverTip on the juice forum. I do have a question. Since many of our pictures are deleted/missing, and the ability to upload via album disabled, use your imagination.

I have about every circuit traced and ready for connection. Just a reminder that over 30 years, boat wires change colors, fade, poor add-ons, etc.

I have a metal permanent fuel tank and metal filler cap. This is NOT the original tank as PO changed to it, never got the gauge to work, and appears removed the bonding. Here is what I have:

Disregard the sender and ground, these are resolved. There is a harness. On side A, the tank side, the pink sender runs into the clip. A black jumper pigs to a post on the tank, and from that post, the black continues into the clip, meaning the sender and tank are grounded as proven by OHMS test. A third wire comes from this clip, lets call it blue(may have been green way back). This blue wire just hung around and has a ring connector on it.

Then the harness clip joins the clip on side B. The pink sender continues on, the black ground continues on, all OK and tested for resistance. The corresponding wire that appears is a white with green stripe. This same color appears at the battery with a ring connector. I tested that wire with the ring of the blue wire and they are continuous, so it appears this wire gets attached to the NEG battery post to maybe ground(bond) the filler cap.

After a visual inspection underneath the fuel cap, I noticed one of the locknuts was very loose, almost off. Me thinks this blue wire is my bonding wire for the static of metal fillers and caps.

I opted to attach it there, but won't make the battery connection until later. I followed with a resistance test with the cap and wire at the battery box, and it reads ZERO, so continuity remained there.

Can anyone examine their fuel tanks for this hookup?

If the fuel filler is metal and the tank is permanently installed and metal, they all have to be bonded to the negative battery terminal. This keeps everything at the same electrical potential and lowers the risk for static electricity build up when refueling.
You don't want an accident at the gas station.

Re: 79 SS18 Project

Thought I would refresh my original thread with updates. All the pics were removed because I used the site Albums function, sorry bout that.

I did get all the electrical tied down thanks to overcoming my stubborness and getting a Multimeter, mainly for tracing continuity. All the wiring has been identified, the new panel is in, and I did one thing based on laziness, and/or not goofing things up.

Since my model had no IGN to the panel and an aftermarket fuel gauge, I opted to use the continuous power supplied and added a matching switch to monitor fuel quantity. It sits nicely next to the 12v added outlet. The new dash is now attached, veneered in black microdot Formica and the switch panel is woodgrain.

Ready to mount the steering, then had a dumbarse episode, but reviewed Huron's resto to see his pics as we have identical steering systems.............thanks

Decals and striping on order. Made a call to the HBIRD/MINNKOTA rep I met through doing some booth work at sportsmans shows to put feelers out for floor model fishfinder and trolling motor. Finances will dictate what, when, if possible.

Guy in Indiana hot for my Holsclaw duel axle. Not a fan of roller trailers, need a 4 bunk drive-on. Possible swap when the weather breaks.

GLG, you were correct. After all the juice was traced, I determined that the previous owner used the old goat for 10 years by having both ends of a wire connected to the battery ground. This was the mysterious white wire with the green stripe that was part of a harness at the fuel tank and the battery.

When I inspected under the metal filler cap, one of the 3 nuts was nearly off and I deduced that when the original small portable tanks were swapped out for a larger permanent one, they never grounded the cap. I attached one end back to that bolt and the other to the NEG at the battery.

I now have individual switches for the HORN, NAV/ANC, Courtesy LED's, Bilge 1, and Bilge 2, a fuel switch, and a 12v remote outlet, mainly for dock lighting. All the LED's are fed by the one switch, but only the 2 cockpit floors light on that switch as the other LED's each have their own switches on the light itself, bow area and gunwales.

For resto guys looking to stay original and classic, my SS came with a windshield wiper. It also came with an in-dash Lowrance sounder with switches and transducer. I have removed these items and they are available at no cost, just PM me for those.

Re: 79 SS18 Project

Glad my photos of the steering helped out...I'm a real pro now since I put it together every possible incorrect way at least twice.:D

Very glad to hear that you got the electrical issues sorted out, that sounded like a real headache.

He had all his photos hosted in the gallery on iboats. For whatever reason, the powers that be decided to eliminate the gallery with this "upgrade". I'd recommend he create an account on photobucket.com (or similar) and host his photos there.

After the deck was removed, cleaned it, reset about 30 stringer rivets, water tested flooding the hull with food colored water, no leaks, still did the Gluvit as I had 1/2 gallon left from my 2000 Star.

My foam sheets were in great shape, so I used them. She is a dry boat so the floor rotted from 30 seasons of exposure to the element. Picture below shows some added structure for the ski tow.

Topside primer, she is now gray there and the gunwale tops:

Hey Starman, not sure if I am the only one but I cannot see the pics. It has the icon of a pic that is ripped so it is not giving anything to say why. Just thought I would see if anyone else is having that issue.

Being a moderator, I'm able to go into an edit mode on your posts and see the direct links to your pictures. Even if I try to go to one of the direct links, it doesn't work.

Okay, anyone who had an album, create a reply, then edit it to get to "manage attachments" There should be your stored pictures plus the ability to upload more of them.

I edited the posts in this fashion, but never chatted about the pics much.
