Lost my project helper yesterday. Q went over his handlebars on a mountain biking trail. Would have probably been ok except his hand came down in a hole. Twist! Pop! And a "fun" afternoon in the emergency room to fix his dislocated elbow.

He'll be in a cast for 6 to 8 weeks and will have to baby it after that.

Bummer. Helper gone.

That's unfortunate. Hopefully he'll heal up quick. It the grand scheme of things 6 or 8 weeks won't make the difference. Probably won't be real helpful for 6 months if things got mangled up pretty bad, but again, not going to change your whole life. Try to get what you can done and not get too down about it. I know it's harder to do projects on your own. Well, harder to find the motivation when there's not the aspect of socializing.

Thanks for the encouragement. I told Mrs Kickback she was going to have to stop finding excuses on Mondays (salon is closed) to not work on the boat. Lol

I bought an orbital sander yesterday and told Q it was for his left hand. Lol

I did get the rest of the fg on the staircase. A quick rough & scuff and it will be ready for gel coat spray on the inside.

I read mos of your thread, but not all.
I've learned you are converting a 22ft islander from an i/o to an outboard!
been there done that! going on my 3rd year with it.
I have a thread on here..getting dated.
but I will suggest..I'm so happy that I did..words cannot describe.
ugliest boat I ever owned..but also the most functional.
just make sure your outboard is a 25 inch mid..I also read you have a jack plate?
if so..forget the nay sayers..they have never run the math..she will work and like a champ!

Hey havingfun2, you mentioned your old thread from 3 years ago. I would like to take a look, but didn't see a link.

BTW, you may have confused my thread with another. I am converting a 1981 Sea Ray SRV 255 Sedan Bridge from twin I/O to twin OB. But that's OK, still interested in seeing your project.

[h=1]Weekend Update[/h]I got some time on Saturday and a bit more on Sunday. I finished the filleting of the companionway and the water tank bulkhead. They are both ready for tabbing and FG. I also made a template for the gunwale extensions (see next post).

Today (Monday), I couldn’t work on the boat. Despite beautiful weather for a change, we had to work at the salon. 200 hair extensions to put in (remember, I am the one that makes them). Took 6 hours. But that’s OK, we’ll work our day off for a thousand bucks.

[h=1]Gunwale Extensions Template[/h]Now that I have completed as much FG?ing on the staircase as I can do at the salon, I need something to work on there. One of the items in the overall plan is to extend the gunwales.

GunwaleBefore.jpg

There are several things I want to change/fix with the gunwales. First (#1 in the picture), is to bring the center of the gunwale up and level with the rest of it. As you can see, it drops down in the center. I want the gunwale to all be at the same level. Also, originally, the gunwales had wood railings mounted on tubing all around. Old school. But removing them leaves the gunwales a bit low. This at least gets me another inch in height.

At position #2 in the picture, you can see two openings that were originally engine room exhaust ports. Ugly, and again, old school. I will be changing this look. At position #3 was what I consider to be a dangerous problem. Right where you would step as you swing out around the bridge to go forward, several things we poorly designed. First, the short piece you see at a 45 degree angle is right where you want to make you first step. So that slippery little piece either makes your foot slide out from under you or starts you out a little further back than is comfortable. Next, as you swing around, your foot wants to come down right on a section that is tapered down to forward and to the side, with no non-skid surfacing, putting you right off the boat, hanging from railing if you?re lucky.

GunwaleExtensionTemplate.jpg

So, I plan to fix all the problems I see with the gunwales. In the picture you see I made a Styrofoam template of the top piece for the modification. The top surface (#1 in the picture) will now be 8.5? wide. It will bring the height of the gunwale up slightly and provide more comfortable seating when at anchor. It will also diminish that small slippery 45 degree piece.

Along the side, I will FG in a support structure and incorporate new louvered exhaust vents to match the boat d?cor, The aft end will be cut along the line you see in the picture to match the curve in the existing gunwale. Cutting this section out will allow any line I put on the aft cleat to have room to move around.

The forward end of this modification (#2 in the picture) will now add 5.5? wide of stepping space when I go forward. It extends far enough forward that I will be stable, with a good hold on the railing, before I have to step down to the level of the foredeck.

I know the above pictures are very preliminary, and it may be hard to picture the end result, but believe me, it will look like it was made that way when I?m done with it (or at least I hope it will).

That's a very nice upgrade. What are you going to do for non skidin the cockpit and the walkways and bow area?

Well the jury is still out on that one. We've looked at the factory made products where they send you templating materials, you make the templates of what you want, and they send you the finished product. But, they are very, very expensive, especially if you are doing a lot of non-skid area (I am). And if you have them install it, the price is even more ridiculous.

We've also looked at the roll on coatings. KiwiGrip seems to have the edge so far. Hopefully, someone who has used KiwiGrip will comment on their experience.

Captain, Kiwi is huge on classic mako. Lots of people have used it. I used it on my mom and dads houseboat decks. The stuff is awesome as far as being a non skid, I have not seen any better. The texture can be adjusted as well. But the downside is, the Kiwi we have found is hard to keep clean. Like all non skid, it has highs and lows that collect dirt and can be hard to clean. If you do go with kiwi, definately plan on two coats. One coat will allow dirt to get into pores that have very little or no kiwi on the deck because of the texture roller that is used. I suggest rolling in two different directions when applying.

The nice thing about it, is it can be touched up very easily. I would pick a color other than white, something to contrast against the rest of the decks, but stay with a light color.

Your plan looks good on the gunwales. I think some nice inlayed teak or mahogany inlayed into a fiberglassed pocket where it was even on the top would look sweet as well. Your projects moving along, enjoy the process. ;)

Thanks for the heads up on the KiwiGrip. All of the reviews I've seen have been 5 stars. The only complaint, like yours, is cleaning it. Yet many people reference how easy it is to keep clean. Go figure. The KiwiGrip web site says to keep it clean and not let stuff build up. I imagine that's when it gets tough to clean.

Sorry, but I'll have to decline on the nice wood thing. I think I'm allergic to wood. lol. Actually, our stealthy theme doesn't allow for wood, although it probably would look good.

[h=1]New Tarp And An Update[/h]I spent several long afternoons working on the boat. It was hot, but not the ridiculous hot we?ve had over the last few weeks. I needed to get a layer of 1708 on the inside of the main bulkhead as it only had a layer of CSM. So that was the project for this weekend. Man, just cutting the fiberglass takes a lot of time.

I was going to do it in two large pieces, each 50? wide, with one small overlapped piece in the middle. But since my helper, Q, dislocated his elbow (in a cast), I was on my own. As much as I tried, I couldn?t hold such big pieces up to mark them for cutting. So, I had to drop back from my strategy to a more tactical approach, overlapping six smaller pieces. At least most of the overlaps will be in hidden places, so minimal fairing work to make them look good later.

Anyway, I managed to get the three smaller pieces on the boat on Sunday and two more bigger ones on Sunday. I still have one 55?H x 35?W piece to layup one the starboard side and the bulkhead will be finished on the inside. As I progress on the companionway and the staircase, I will need to make several cutouts (for electrical panels and storage door) so I have access to tab in the inside of the staircase. So I needed to get this large layup done first.

One problem I had laying up the port side large piece of 1708 was that after wetting it out on the wetting board, it stretched unevenly as I picked it up. So when putting it in place, I had a bunch (and I mean like 20) of folds sticking up. It took a lot of fast work with the roller and more resin to get them smoothed out. But all was well in the end.

OK, The New Tarp

I?ve been keeping the boat covered with those blue tarps you get at Harbor Freight. The last one I bought was a 29? x 19? on sale for $29.99. Worked great and covered my entire boat. But over time, the sun works on them and they reach a point where they go from good to total mush almost overnight. Sunday, when I got to the boat and began taking the cover off, it just shredded.

So, yesterday, off today HF to get another. The blue tarps are rated light duty. I decided to upgrade. They had camo tarps labeled medium duty and silver ones labeled heavy duty. I took the silver 29? x 19? up to the counter to check the price. The girl said it was on sale for $49.99. I said ?Sold?.

With the wind blowing, I figured I wouldn?t be able to put a tarp that size on the boat by myself, and since Q is temporarily disabled, I had to get Mrs Kick Back to help. When they pack the tarps, they don?t do it so you can just unroll it. No, that would make it too easy. But we finally got it unfolded and on the boat.

So, we will see how well the heavy duty tarp holds up. I?ll be sure to let you know when it finally shreds.

Sea ya?

[h=1]Revisiting The Pressure Pot Spray Gun[/h]I bought the 93312 pressure pot from Harbor Freight. It comes with a 1.8 tip and I bought (through Amazon) a 2.5 tip. Unfortunately, it did not fit the gun, so I’ll have to send it back.

The main reason I wanted to revisit this gun is the statement by Yacht Dr and oops that we need a cheater valve on the air supply (red hose) to the gun. However, this gun has an air inlet control built in to adjust the air flow into the gun. Yacht Dr, I remember you posted once that you have not used this particular gun, but probably a more expensive brand. So, my question, is there still a need for the cheater valve on this particular gun?

One other question: Yacht Dr, you posted (I think) that you have used a 1.8 tip. I assume that is with significant thinning with PatchAid. Would a 2.5 tip (or even bigger) be better so I don’t have to thin as much?

Sea ya…

Yeah. OK. But the're white. Lol. I guess I could paint them grey.

In my mind, I'm thinking twin 175s or 200s would be best. I have thought I could use 150s temporarly until I find what I want. Got a ways to go before that point though.

I typically use the air adjustment valve (cheater) on all my spay guns, its easier to adjust it at the gun even if there is another one at the pressure pot. If yours came with one on the gun then you don't need another one.

You should be able to use a 1.8, but it will be a bit slow, using patchaid or small amounts of other things will help.

Try several different gel coat mixes through the gun before catalyzing any gel coat so you can fine tune it, or find out you need to wait for a larger tip.
