Just picked this up over the weekend. What a project. I spent about 3-4 hours this afternoon researching this forum on how to gut the floor, stringers and transom for repair. There should be some good progress pictures ahead...

My wife sure is nice to let me take this on! No kids yet, so I do still have some time. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Thanks for all of you long time members providing such a wealth of info on here! This forum is GREAT! I'll be doing a lot more reading as I proceed with this project.

Yup, I think you are going to be busy for awhile. My suggestion is that you take your wife out at least a couple of times a month just to avoid the "you spend more time with that boat than you do with me," conversation! :D

Have fun - its gonna be great when you get done with it!

Hmmm... well, it's not all bad. That volvo penta drive probably still works fine, and so will the engine if it's been winterized and hasn't gotten water inside.

The rest of the boat looks like it was out in the sun and water a long time. I'm gonna guess you'll need to replace the deck, pull the foam, replace some stringers and maybe the transom. Then a new interior.

But, it'll be basically new when you finish.

Honestly if it was me I'd pull the VP drive system and put it in a better hull :)

Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

looks to me like it was swamped......

but its a glass boat...everything can be fixed......

youll need a good place to do the project in.....how big is your garage?

when you rip it apart....take lots of pictures and drawings of how it is put togeather.....even the simplest things.....they will be a real bonus to you when your putting it back togeather.

please pay special attention to all safety gear...do a search on safety equipment....glass dust is a really nasty thing.....and btw....dont wash your clothes in your wifes machine!!!!!

cheers

Read, read and read this forum - you will find everything from begining to the end. If you will have dilema - ask - pros here will help you for sure (above you have some sugestions already). You will start really huge job ( for this time you will have "girlfriend" :D). Sometimes you will ask yourself - Why I'm doing this??- but don't give up. When you will finish that boat in right way - you will be proud of yourself and boat. And on the end you become like expert. good luck.

It looks like you will be busy for a while. It does not look that bad, but you most likely will be replacing the stringers, floor and transom. What condition are the engine and drive? That would be my first concern, if they are both junk, then I would look for another boat and part out this one as much as you can. It will cost way too much to replace/repair those. If they are OK, then I would go for it.

You will never make $$ on this. You will throw quite a bit at it in materials which you will be able to recover if you were to sell it, but you will never get you labor. Lots of reading here at iboats on the topic. Here is a link to my project that I completed last summer.

Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

The good news is that there are only two stringers in there. They double as the walls of the ski locker/bilge area. The plywood rests on the stringers and the edges of the hull where the raised ridge runs right near the trailer bunks, just inboard of the chines.

Good luck.

Consider documenting your project on shareaproject.com.

Looking forward to seeing the what is under the floor!!!

BTW, I have a 85 Capri 1600 and I can tell you the handling is superb for that small craft.

Another thing. The trailer frame is bent on the right side, and the bunk is following the bend making a "hump" in the bunk. It looks like the boat has conformed to that hump, and that would be a bad thing. A deformed hull will not handle properly in the water. It can wonder, porpose, chinewalk, etc. Before you spend any money, I suggest you jack up the boat off the bunks and check the hull for "hooks" or other defects that are very difficult (if not practically impossable) to repair.

About the garage... Mine is the little one with the blue door. I spent some time getting it cleaned out this weekend, including building a shelf for my new tools (sawzall, angle grinder, radial saw) and I installed the Airport Express Base Station in the garage to extend my wireless network. The garage is about 100 feet from the house. I'm going to put the boat in the garage today, but I have to first remove the outdrive (already took off the windshield and steps off the back).

By the way I need help with that outdrive removal (for those still reading this post). How do you go about removing the large pins that hold onto the outdrive laterally? I've already removed the allen screws and hit the pin with a impact screw driver but it did not budge. I then soaked the area with penetrating oil. What next? Hit it again with the impact?

Oops, thanks for the tips on the safety equipment. What kind of safety mask should I be looking for? Can I get it at home depot or is that a bad idea? Thanks in advance!

Pic's below for your enjoyment.

There are two allen screws that hold the pin in place (one on each side). You need to remove those first. You should get a shop manual.

Oh man thanks! That seems obvious now that you say it.

You should get a shop manual

I've seen a few posts on here of people mocking the SELOC manual. Should I just go for a factory manual then?

Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

I have a Seloc and it is not that great, but it is better than nothing.

Here is how to remove the pins from my manual.

Remove the allen bolt like I suggested earlier.

Place suitable blocks of wood under the skeg to support the drive.

Drive the hinge pins free of the transom shield. In order to accomplish this task, first turn the stern drive hard over to port, remove the starboard pin. Next turn the stern drive hard over to starboatd and remove the port side pin.

From your picture I believe the pin is driven inwards. On mine, I had to use a slide hammer and pull them out, but yours does not have a threaded hole in the middle. Which is why I think you drive it in, like the manual says.

I think that you should remove the steering helmet before you remove the hinge pins.

Have a great day,

Rob.

If you want the OEM manual, keep an eye on ebay. I got a used but complete and clean manual for a 1985 Force outboard for about $25.

The OEM manuals can not be beat. Seloc is better than nothing.

Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

i also have a 1985 bayliner but mine is a 19ft cuddy outboard boat, its got a 125 force on it. i just finished installing the new transom and floor in it and honestly it wasnt that hard at all ,the stringers in my boat were ok , i used epoxy resin in the transom and polyester resin in the floor and it worked out great, its stronger now then when it was new. bayliners are nice boats ,simple construction and a nice ride . if you have any questions just ask.

Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

I haven't received my manual for this yet, so I'm hoping someone can chime in and help me? There is only one allen screw for the pin pictured below and it has been removed. Does this pin turn or just get pressed? I would assume it is supposed to be turned out since the pin looks like a big flat head screw. Where will I find a screw driver wide enough for this????

I have to get the outdrive off for this boat to fit in my garage. Right now it's parked in the alley and my neighbors are probably going to lose their patience since alley parking is not allowed.:( Trying to do this before the night is over...

Like I said earlier.

Have you removed the steering helmet?? That should be done first

Thanks Rob. The helmet was not in the way. I was able to drive the pins in towards the center when the stern drive was turned all the way starboard and the other one when it was turned port side just as you said.

Thanks again.

Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

Kbomb,

Read TD's post and take it to heart. Figure out how much money you are going to have to put into this thing, don't for get your labor because your time is money. Are you good with carpentry, mechanical, and upholstery? If not, these things add up quick.

Not trying to be negative, I just don't want you to get in over your head or sink a ton of money into the boat only to realize you could have been able to buy a boat in better shape for less money.

And time considerations, unless you are able to devote all of your spare time on this project I wouldn't count on it being finished until next boating season.
