Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Well, my body is sore and I have cuts from the fiberglass but the cap is off. I feel like I won a small battle.

Bought a sawzall, full ventilator for fiberglass & some beer. Tomorrow it's on.

I would add supports and build a cradle to help support the hull before doing any more removal. You don't want the hull to flex at this point. Take measurements everywhere, and like the others said, include the tape measure in the pictures.

Just from the age of the boat I would plan on replacing all the structure including the transom. It is a lot of work but we are here to help.

responded to your message.

as I said, I build my cradle on my trailer.

as for the wiring, I keep the wiring and steering with the cap. I had an OMC stringer in my '84, so the steering was fairly easy. The steering cable on your mercruiser is almost as easy.

dont forget teh shift cables and throttle cables. I left those with the cap. zip ties are your friend. I even bought the big 3' long ones. I used a bunch of ratchet straps to the trusses in my shop to lift and store the cap.

there will be a few stripped screws. I was able to have my daughter turn them with a cordless screw driver while I pushed on the backside of the few with a prybar.

I used a steak knife to cut the silicone caulking between the hull and cap. Dont use a good one from the house, the mrs will not be happy.

A skill saw blade set to the same depth of the thickness of the deck/sole works wonders. the actual floor are where it meets the hull is not that wide. when you have the carpet out, you should be able to see the seams where the floor is tabbed in and where the hull actually is. if you drill thru, dont worry, its just another thing to repair. yes, I have been there, done that.

I used a chainsaw to remove the wood from the transom after I pulled the inner skin. I recommend an electric one if your working in doors. I also put small 4" saw blades in my 4.5" grinder. I had to get those little shim washers because the grinder arbor was 5/6" and the saw blade hole was 20mm. be carefull with that, the carbides in the blades sometimes come off.

Deja Vu. that looks like a familiar site.

once the hull is braced and the cap is raised. pull the carpet out of the hull, fire up a pressure washer and clean the inside. you will be able to see the end of the floor where it is tabbed into the hull. this will make removal of the floor much much easier (and not cut thru the hull)

Re: '89 Avanti 170 DLI

the locker and cooler are simply bulkheads and stringers creating a cavity with a hole in the floor for access.

Are stringers the raised "ridges" which span the width and length of the bottom interior of the boat? I'm still trying to grasp the terminology so I understand what they are and what they do for a boat. Thanks guys again.

Thank you. That makes perfect sense now. So I have one stringer and several bulkheads. I see now why you were saying the ski locker and coolers were just bulkheads. Makes sense now that I know what that means. LOL.

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

I pulled the carpet last night. It was something I could do relatively easy with the hour I had to do it in. New pictures of how bad the damage is to the deck. The PO cut some blocks to support the new ply he laid over it. It worked but man what a way to redneck it up. BTW. I live in Knoxville so I can say something looks redneck even tho I'm not from here. LOL.

A few additional questions now that I've poked around a little more. The back of the boat, pictured, had a seat to get out of the water. I took the railing off and the pictures I posted shows a screw that was embedded into the inside on the back of the boat. I soaked it with some bolt breaker before I went to bed so hopefully she'll turn today ... my question. That part of the back of the boat seems very lightweight compared to the transom area of the back. The transom seems thick, solid and burly while the rest of the back on the extreme right and left of the transom seem very lightweight and where the hose for the blower is attached is even kinda bubbling out some where its screwed in. Wonder if this was normal? Should the entire back of the boat be as dense and burly as the transom area?

I also had a few pictures of the wiring to the console and throttle. I have no idea how to get this out without cutting stuff. There are WAY too many wires going to the engine, ignition, battery, etc to disassemble it all and even if I did I'd still be looking at how I get the giant throttle cable out of the bottom of the boat. All the cables are run through a channel on the side of the deck. I pictured it as well. I was thinking that maybe I cut this out as part of the deck restoration since I saw ply and all that as part of it's makeup but I wasn't sure.

Thanks guys. Off to work to earn more money to throw into my boats mouth... nom nom!!

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Lifted the cap to the rafters and got it completely off the bottom. Cut the channel in the bottom to get the cables from the console and the driving cable out. Vacuumed everything I could from the deck and pulled as much of the rotten board out from the middle to see how the cooler sat in relation to the bulkhead.

I found some rot in the cap floor in the front. I'm assuming that's pretty easy to replace. Pictures of everything of course.

Thanks ... progress!

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Will the glue that is left on the hull have to be completely scraped off down to the hull? Or can I get the bulk of it along with the carpet fibers left over from tearing out the carpet and call it done and ready for new carpet when that time comes?

Thanks guys.

Started a boat restoration photobucket project on my account. Easier to post many more pictures that way to just reference them here. Large resolution as well.

Scott, where is the tabbing that you mentioned? I assume it's the indented "channel" of sorts running along the outside of the deck just shy of the hull? I am about to start cutting out old deck and will just ease my way up to it all calm-like. I'm wondering how the new deck will sit in the bottom of the boat. Does it rest on an edge or just lay on top of the bottom of the boat or am I completely wrong?

Thanks guys.

I think I'm moving much faster than the forum is used to. I find myself waiting for days for some of the questions but I am definitely not ungrateful in the slightest. I have a nuclear fire lit under me and just want it done :)

Thanks again.

Awesome GT. I appreciate the confirmation on the cut lines. Does the deck just drop into that little cleft or is it more complex than that below the deck where it attaches to the hull?

I'm scraping out carpet leftovers and glue ...

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Just runs over & sits on the chine.

I'd probably stay 2" back from the edge and get the bulk of the deck out of the way. Then come back & take that last 2" off....

YOU WILL CUT THRU THE HULL.

We all do :cold:

Admit it's likely to happen, accept that it will, and when it does, move on.

You can fix it later during put back.

But taking the deck up 1st then trimming the last 2" off after, can really help prevent it. And allows you a little extra margin of error for the depth of saw cut. 1/2" deck & some resin & glass is likely near 5/8" thick. Set the circ saw depth for a bit shy of 5/8", cut 2" away from the intended removal line, and you probably won't make more work for yourself. Slow & steady............

Even more margin of error if you're using something not as easy to control the depth of cut to remove the deck..

I LOVED the multi-tool for removing that last 2":

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

I had my oscillating tool in my pile o' tools for this project JB ... good call on that one. What blades did you end up using most? When I get the majority of the deck cut out am I supposed to cut down into the edge where the deck is recessed? Will it be obvious that I'm still cutting the deck out? I assume I'll see ply until it's gone and then I'll know where to replace what.

What I found on the first few cuts. I wasn't prepared to see a bunch of foam. Is that normal? Should I leave it? Looks good other than the top layer that was up against the rotten wood.

Tossed a picture of the bulkhead between the cooler and locker. I assume this guy is coming out or can I leave it?
