Re: 93 Crownline 196 deck and more

It has been a while since an update, so here goes. I did miss a complete week so progress has been hindered pretty bad. I was able to get the full weekend to tie up loose ends and continue where I had left off. I started off by PBing the final pieces I had cut and getting everything that was installed cut to height for the deck.

On my last batch of PB, I ran out of cabosil, and had to mix it a little thin for my liking but it held together for the corners and I was able to finish. This morning I ordered more cabosil and a little more 1/4" chopped strands because I was worried that I might run out and figured it would be easier to get it all in one shipment.

Late Saturday afternoon I was able to start on the bow portion of the stringers. So with the time spent Saturday and a few hours Sunday, you can see in the picture above what I was able to get done. According to my count, I only lack 6 more pieces and they are all 2 feet or less in length.

As it stands now. I have two weeks and one more full weekend to work and then I will be out of the country for a couple of weeks and won't get to resume until the second weekend in May. This is definitely going to put a big dent in my plans but I will just have to work with what I got.

Re: 93 Crownline 196 deck and more

Finally another task finished. I have all of the stringers cut and mocked up.

I still have to cut these to deck height but I learned tonight that I will have to do this as I go. My supplies will be here Thursday so I should be able to start back full force this weekend. Luckily it will give me a couple of days to resin coat all the bare wood and start grinding the old deck lip out. Just the thought of grinding is just making me cringe again, but it has to be done.

Strangely enough the slower process or slight delays has been good for me, only because it allows time to re-think the task's and efforts required, and they change often when doing the customized type work some of these projects require.

But summer waits for no one, so carry on!!

Time for an update. I have all of the stringers PBed in and cut to height with the exception of the ski locker. I actually started pre cutting my 1708 strips so I could get a jump start on this week.

Question: on the corners, do I need to cut the full runs a little short and put the corner tabs in or can I leave it like it is ( if the picture is clear enough to see). I was not sure so I cut them pretty tight.

Anyhow, I feel like the weekend has been pretty productive. I'm getting close to reaching my goal before I leave to go out of the country. I'm going to make a hard push this week and maybe I can get there. I will try to update this week as time allows.

Project is coming along real nice Aj,... good work!

I try and tab my corners before running the lengths.

^^^Same.

I did some corner tabbing first with separate pieces, that way the long lengths don't have to be exact, you'll notice the pieces will distort when they wet out if you pull on them. In order to get all the surfaces in one corner tabbed, you would normally need three separate pieces, stringer-to-bulkhead, stringer-to-hull, bulkhead-to-hull. There's a better, simpler way, but it's hard to explain. In the corners, I would cut a piece the height of the stringer, plus a couple of inches, and make it around 6" wide. In the bottom part of the piece, make a relief cut up the centre, a couple of inches, then you can bend the piece into place and tuck it into the corner with overlapping wings on the hull. It's kind of a one-piece tab that gets all three surfaces (stringer, bulkhead, hull) at once. FriscoJarrets did this on his SeaRay (saw it on one of his vids where he was tabbing stringers), it seems to work really well. On critical joints, make two of these, with the second layer larger so it overlaps the first.

Also, what I found was that wetting out the pieces in place, especially 1708 on vertical surfaces seems to take forever, it's painstaking. I found it works way better to wet out the 1708 on a sacrificial plank of plywood. Once it's wetted out, carefully pick it up, move it into position, and tuck it into place with a 4" microfiber roller. For wetting out, I first slathered some resin on the board, then laid the 1708 on the resin (on the board) with the CSM side up, then would complete the wet out until clear before moving it into place. It seems like more work to do it this way, but once you try it, you'll never to back. Downside is you'll use up alot more gloves. Just my own opinion though. :)

Hopefully this was more helpful than confusing!

You can also lay plastic down on the board before you wet out the 1708, keeps the board from soaking up any resin, and using it to carry over to the layup site gives the wetted out glass a backer while you're moving it into place.

Very nice atjohnson, I thought about making all my cuts first but my nature got the better of me and I just jumped in making cuts while measuring and then making small batches of resin to fix in a few pieces at a time. Your method has the advantage of moving from one end to the other limited only by how quickly you can mix resin and wet glass. Each piece will be going on while the other is still curing creating a more singular install. I like it! I had to take a break yesterday and so I am going to have some areas that will not be as much of a chemical bond as a physical due to the break between. That bothered me but had to go in to work. Just make sure you leave yourself a full day to put all that in to benefit.

Thanks for the input guys. I really like the idea of wetting out the piece prior to installation. This idea had never came to mind. I remember the 1708 walking around a good bit while I was working on another area and this could definitely be the solution.

I will be pre-cutting at least one more day before starting to lay any of it so hopefully this will give me plenty of time to debate my process before hand.

@bvetter: I remember from the video how you are explaining the corners. This is the method I had planned to attempt. I was just wanting to ensure that I had enough room to make the corners plus my runs that I have cut for my stringers. The thought is that I might have to trim a 1/2" off of my existing run but that shouldn't be a problem.

You're well on your way! Cutting out all your pieces before hand is nice. Once you get rolling with wetting out the mat, it's really annoying to have to stop along the way to measure and cut more. So kudos to you for getting all the tedious work out of the way first.

Re: 93 Crownline 196 deck and more

Well yesterday was truly a learning experience for me. I started with big intentions and an hour and a half later, I was so mad I couldn't see straight. My long runs for the outer stringers were.......perhaps too long. They will have to be done in separate layups. Not a problem knowing that now, just an unpleasant surprise yesterday. Today will be my last efforts until the first week in May so I'm hoping to get as much as possible accomplished. I will try to get a few pictures of this attempt before leaving it idle for a few weeks.

Brings back memories. The good news is that you'll teach yourself tricks along the way to really make things easier every time you do layups. It's gets way better from here on in.

Can't wait for the pics.

Re: 93 Crownline 196 deck and more

Had a little more success than yesterday today but did not get to the point that I wanted to be. Presoaking the cloth did help and my sections were too long. The length was allowing too many air pockets to form. Will have to figure out how to split my long pieces that are pre cut without wasting any 1708. I was thinking about making a cut and putting a splice on the cut to join them. I managed to get probably 20% finished even with the trouble I faced so I'm not too bummed. It was not completely cured so the picture isn't great.

You can distinctly see how much tighter the 1708 laid over the tank area as compared to the outer stringer. We will just call that a lesson learned.

Re: 93 Crownline 196 deck and more

Well I made it back into the country but thanks to jet lag and things needing done at home, I was only able to work for a few hours Saturday. I did manage to get several more stringers wrapped but did not get any photos. After coming back and inspecting my work, I noticed some air pockets that had formed. I believe I will try to inject resin into these areas to see if I can correct the majority of the issues. Hopefully I will get to resume like normal on Thursday and work through the weekend. If so, I will try to upload some pictures of my progress.

Re: 93 Crownline 196 deck and more

I made a little progress yesterday afternoon. All I am lacking having my precut pieces from before I left is the long outside run on the port side.

Compared to the other side, I have split this run into two different pieces for ease of install. The longer piece on the other side just did not want to cooperate. Game plan for the weekend is to cut my last two stringers down that I still haven't done and last but not least, cut the old deck lip out before continuing on with wrapping the 1708. I am thinking that after this weekend and some of next week, I should be ready to start cutting plywood for my deck. That will definitely be a relief when I get to that point.

Well guys like may others out there, I am having trouble accessing anything past page one so I haven't been able to update because I honestly don't remember the last thing I posted. As soon as all of the bugs get worked out I will post pictures. Currently, I have the deck pieces cut out and am in the process of soaking and skinning the bottom side with CSM. I still have some minor things to finish up on the stringers but I'm kinda tag teaming 2 or 3 task at a time. I know it sure was nice having something level to walk on. It actually felt weird not standing on the bottom of the hull for a change.

Feel free to tag along corjen1.

Since I can actually see my last post, I'll try to pick up where i left off. Last weekend, I was able to finish wrapping stringer. I still have some ugly spots, but they are practically complete.

Since the stringers were mostly complete, I decided to get the deck cut so I could get it prepped for install while I tie up loose ends.

It definitely a sight for sore eyes even if it isn't finished. I have all but one piece presoaked in resin. I actually meant to start on the bottom skin today, but there were too many things that needed done at home so i spent the afternoon doing yard work. Looks like work will not resume until Thursday, but a couple days rest wont hurt.

Also, I have a couple of members that messaged me and due to the update, I lost all record of it. If you happen to see this, shoot me a message back.
