They should just shoot any pirate on sight, ask questions later. If they capture them, just dump them at sea 1000 miles from land.

They say there's 600+ people being detained by hijackers. If these hijackers are in waters where there is no law, then start blowing the little p**ker heads out of the water. Bet the hijackings would stop in a real hurry.

"Ships sailing the high seas are generally under the jurisdiction of the flag state;[2] (if there is one) however, when a ship is involved in certain criminal acts, such as piracy,[3] any nation can exercise jurisdiction under the doctrine of universal jurisdiction."

I think the US needs to exercise some jurisdiction with their guns.

Argh!! Gnash!!:mad::mad:

Send in the Marines and/or the SEALS. If you know military history you know what "The shores of Tripoli" refers to.

Pirates were pretty active in the Gulf Stream in the early 80s. They killed people and used their boats to run drugs.

That is why I carried a SS .44 Magnum aboard Sunshine.

Sad for the victim's friends and family.
How ridiculous having to worry about pirates this day and age. I wonder what those poor people would do differently if they could? Suppose if they had their own RPG's they could have stopped the pirates before they were boarded?

I'll second the motion - RPGs for any ocean going vessel! Would love to see the look on the pirates' faces seeing an incoming RPG!

I agree as well. From what I've seen these pirates aren't exactly armed to the teeth. I wonder if in this case something as simple as a high powered rifle (something with more range than they have) would be all it takes to outgun the pirates?

I personally wouldn't want to find out. I'm no tough guy but faced with pirates in open water it's do or die!!

Maybe just nuke Somalia, put an end to all the pain, hunger, suffering, terrorizm, piracy, etc....the place is a cross between a junkyard and a war zone! What's it worth? Bad attitude here today!

:(My condolences to their families.
This has been going on too long. Our navy needs to armor plate the topside of some of our subs, and send them out to patrol those waters. When they spot a pirate ship they should then surface right under the pirate ship.......OOOPs.......didn't see ya......

I agree shoot first ask questions later. It is a shame that this has been allowed to go on as long as it has. We could stop it in a week if we want to. Track them down (drug lords, gang members) and take them out. Yes there will be some civies that end up dead in the mix, but that sometimes is the cost of war.

Navy needs to set up some fake merchant ships as decoys and shoot them out of the water when the pirates attack. You think the pirates may stop and think next time?

Hey guys, I am as pizzed about this as the next guy. Just want to remind everyone to help keep this thread open. Best way to do that is to please limit all replies to regarding the Pirates specifically. No need to discuss any land or political targets. The bad guys, IMHO, are easily understood as armed people, intent on criminally assaulting an otherwise peaceful and legal vessel, AKA Pirate . . . ;)

I guess I mean if we are going to discuss using Nukes let's limit that discussion to how we could target one boat with only pirates aboard and without any innocent fishies getting incinerated or boiled at the same time. This may help keep any politics out of the discussion :)

I liked how the Russians dealt with it when the Moscow University was hijacked.....

Took back the ship, put the surviving pirates back in their boat without any radio gear and turned them loose 300+ miles from shore. They were found dead 2 weeks later.

Brutal? Absolutely....but that's 10 fewer pirates on the open seas and no costly trial to mess with.

I think this latest action may change the way all nations are dealing w piracy. It seems to me that any "Aid" sent to that region would only go to the bad guys though.I think the pirates have upped the anti and responses will be harsher for them in the future. If it was closer to the US, maybe some retired guys from Arizona etc. would be "Sportfishing" there w some heavy "Tackle"!!!No catch and release though.

Hmmm, I wonder what a Mark 48 torpedo would do to a zodiac?

Yup....Try boarding or overtaking a boat with an ol' mate and see how far you get. We used to carry a 30/06, .45, .38, and a 12ga. The 12 ga. was mine.... if they ever got that close..... And a Bible.

I have an idea where the sailors are headed, the opposite direction as the pirates.

Peace! Godspeed.

I'm far from retirement, but I would be there none the less !
