I also tell you that I am from Quebec and I'm not very good at English, so please forgive a few mistakes.

So far, so good with the English! Have you read some posts on here? Your English is better than most who live in the U.S. At least everything is spelled correctly. I am by no means an English professor, I failed English thirteen times in high school, but I am smart enough to know what the red line under a word means when typing. I am a math nerd, English is too subjective. Keep up the good work. I love the Starcraft restoration threads even though I don't own one. Maybe I will wise up one day and come over to the dark side!

Moving along Tagg. Don't worry about the hull, all these guys can help with anything. They have either had it, seen it, or done it. And you can't beat the price they charge for advice.:D

Bud, a cheapo wire wheel on a cordless drill will dress up those pitting areas much better than sanding and it's much much faster. Get her cleaned up and let us have a look.

Hope I spelled all that right:p:D

and you're making good progress BTW.

@ North Beach : If i use a grinder with this... http://cgi.ebay.ca/4-x-5-8-THREAD-C...-Welding-/270452378685?pt=BI_Welding_Supplies

is it ok ???

Dave

that exactly what im going to be using on my transom corrosion area.... then i will be filling it with " allmetal " sand, prime, and paint .. ( sometime this late summer /fall i hope lol ) i also have some wire wheels like NB linked you to that i will use on smaller areas like where i removed a bunch of old snaps for a cover and they will be filled etc in the same manner as i already mentioned. wire wheel is much better and easier for the pitting than trying to sand ( as NB mentioned ) CBG

I am discouraged. The fears I had that confirmed. I washed the hull with a pressure washer. If you look carefully the second and third pics, there seems to be signs of corrosion.

I must confess that I do not know what to do. It does not seem to be any leak (except near of transom). But I have not tested. My fear is that when I will sand the hull, there will be a multitude of holes.

I really need your help. I bought JDWeld, Marine Tex and gluvit. Then I think to redo everything with All Metal as suggested by a member. Get rid of the boat ?

Help me please lol :)

Keep at it tag, I think you will be aok. Like the guys mentioned - JB, All Metal, Marine Tex may all be good routes for you. She may be a little more work for you but I am sure you can do it!

if i were you .... id flip her over, strip the paint, then see where you are at. i see some corrosion but to me it really doesnt look all that bad .... might look worse in person.

just a little FYI ... when i was stripping my hull i got some stuff at lowes ... http://jasco-help.com/ that stuff ROCKS.... and its fast. i applied the stripper waited till it wrinkled ( not long ) then used a combination wire brush and putty knife to remove.... then when i was just about finished for the day, id go back over some of the spots that didnt come off or just the residue of paint that was left and then used a pressure washer to finish up .... this is how mine has turned out so far ... http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/coolbikeguy/104_0877.jpg to do this section and down that whole side about a foot under the chine only took like a 1/2 hour. thank you very much. The fact that I did not have much experience scares me. But I'll continue anyway. I really want this project. I'll take off my engine this week to sand.

I'll watch if your product is available in Canada CBG

Thanx again

Re: Another Starcraft Restoration : SuperSport 18' 1977

Tagggg, where are you located? that boat looks like it's seen some heavy salt exposure. My mariner was in about the same shape. Check out my mariner link at tha bottom of my sig.

I'd bet most of that corrosion is from water getting in topside (on the inside at least). Like E says, we've seen worse.

Wire wheel the heck out of the inside. Do your water test and mark the rivets that leak. Buck the rivets with two baby sledge hammers, you on the inside swingin and one of your buddies that you know something on:D under the boat holding the hammer on the rivit. Watertest again and buck again if needed. Drill out and replace broken rivets with small smooth head phillips head thru bolt with washers and lock nuts on the inside. Make sure you squirt some 5200 in the hole first. Then grind off the excess bolt on the inside, and cover the entire bottom of the boat on the inside with a good coat of gluvit.

Flip the boat, wire wheel the outside, wash with vinegar and water and wait for it to dry. Get yourself a small batch of marine tex. Mix it up and just skim coat the pitting areas but you gotta move fast! Wipe with a damp cloth before it sets up so you don't have to do so much sanding.

prime and paint!!!!!! No worries!

Re: Another Starcraft Restoration : SuperSport 18' 1977

@ CBG I searched this 2 products but I found nothing near me. But, there is an excellent product that I already use for other situations (furniture restoration). I checked and it can be used on aluminum. I'll try it tonight on a small area.

@ North Beach Thank you for your advise. I have a question about how to repear the pitting areas. Is it better to use Marine Tex or All metal (or other kind of this product) ? I know that Marine Tex is designed to interfere with this situation but it seems that the All Metal is more durable and solid. Purpose, I know that the All Metal is not designed for marine use.

And yes this boat used in Salt Water :(

Tagggg, I don't know about the other material, but the PO had done some repairs over a few of the missing rivets on this boat and it was all I could do to get it off the danged boat. And the Marine tex is easy to skim over the pitting with and sandable with the orbital sander.

I'm not sayin it's better, I just know it works.

Tagggg,
I'm not sure but I think you probably shouldn't use those blind rivets thru the hull since the are probably not watertight. You'd be better off thru bolting with the bolt set in 5200 for a watertight seal and make sure you use a washer and a lock nut on the inside.
