I continue my quest for an open bow Starcraft!

I came across a 75 21' Mariner. I searched the site and did find a few owners, very little info except that when made it was about 900# 21.25' long and 86" wide.

The boat was a center console. It has been gutted, new transom, rivots bucked, gulvit applied, exterior painted, comes w/ a two axle trailer - needs winch/ stand which I have.

My biggest concern is my TV it is a 92 Caprice wagon, 5.7 350, will this boat be too big?

I have a 135 evinrude, boats is rated for a 140.

Main uses cruising, tubing, skiing, and casual fishing.

What's the budget number to put a good floor in this?

Is this worth a grand as is?

What say you Starcraft diehards out there?

Re: Are my eyes too big for my .....

I would guess floor as 4-5 sheets marine or close fitted plywood (no treated) rivits sealer paint ,,someone help me here . Id say bout $600 Floor only. There has been a ton of work already done that would have cost a bit to do plus the time. floor ready , $1000 seems reasonable if the trailer is good to go also.I would want someone with know how to determine what they did to the trailer toung???? the boat is way behind you on that one. Guys will have fun with this one. Good luck if you purchase it.

Thanks Puget - yes the trailer tongue is different, spliced. I'm trying to figure out if it's an optical illusion or if they really added 8' of tongue. Needs wiring completed too.
Seller states he towed a 21 i/o 400 miles home on this trailer.

You won't have to worry about getting your tow vehicle wet!!

I am guessing that they had a place with a fairly shallow launch and did not have a truck to launch with. But then I don't know anything anyway, so there ya go.

As far as your TV, what is the terrain like there? If it isn't a lot of steep hills you should be ok. I used to tow a 2500# boat/trailer combo with a 75 Chevy Nova 6 cyl. auto trans with no problem. Flat towing with no hills.

Your fully rigged boat will be 1300-1500 pounds, maybe less. Add 500 for the trailer, still less than 2000#. You should be ok.

That Mariner looks good and only needs the deck to give you the base you need to make what you want. Add a CC and some seating for the Admiral and cadets - you have a good fishing/fun boat for the family.

If you are looking to save $ on the rebuild exterior ply is less than marine ply. Jason used another exterior type that is between the two in cost. The name escapes me now.

I'm jealous - that is about what I'm looking for but too far for me. Lucky dog! Is he asking $1K? Might be able to do $750-800. It is just a hull and trailer project now, not really a "boat".

The trailer tongue does need work. The front should never be smaller than the rear. The length is ok, the splice is shaky. Not a hard fix to make it safer. Good thing the po didn't tow the i/o 401 miles. Some police look for things like that to amuse themselves.

BTW - the debbil make Kelly do it, LOL Sorry for the novel.

Forgot one thing. That's a two axle trailer, shouldn't it have brakes? I'm betting it does and when the tongue was re-worked they just trashed the master cylinder for the brakes. As long as it is, brakes would help make it a safer tow and that skinny tongue won't ^ on you.in a panic stop.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/boa/2429750434.html, here's a deal closer to your home, no excuses now.

Towing - need to replace my tranny and add a cooler. should do the trick. Yes we have hills but not mountains.

The front should never be smaller than the rear.
, It's very late and I'm still up explain please:confused:

Also, great pick up on the brakes, didn't think about that. I also see no side markers, but hey there's no plug either.

I'd be thinking a couple of quick things...

You should do better than $1K here in MI, maybe $500 to $750 range.

Trailer - welder can fix that tongue up in a jif and I believe you need better than 3500# to need trailer brakes here in MI.

You have plenty of power and plenty of weight for your tow vehicle. And, our tin boats are light. Does it have a class II or III hitch on it? Sometimes they come with those puny class I, no good.

Last, for your use, you'll certainly want consoles and a windshield. With this boat you'll need to find a windshield to fit the boat and then fabricate consoles to match both. Might be pretty tricky depending on your skills.

She is a sweet hull for sure, make for a sweet sc/cc.

Re: Are my eyes too big for my .....

I tow an Islander with my wife's 3.5 liter mini van - needed something bigger when my four daughters and all of our camping gear food etc were in her.

My trailered Islander is 32ft long from tongue to skeg and that rig looks even longer.

The tongue does look shaky but my rig is even weirder.

Check the pic of the trailer guys - anyone ever seen it set up like this?

I should cruise the towing forum and maybe start a thread thereDSC08525.jpgTRAILER SETUP.jpgDSC08527.jpgDSC08533.jpgDSC08528.jpg

Jason, thanks for chiming in - 1K was budget for discussion.

Brakes would be a bonus, not required -

Welding the tongue, yea I weld, but it's not pretty. I'm thinking they did this for a homemade removable tongue.

I think these wagons came w/ a class II hitch, 5K rated.

Consoles and Windshield, finding the right glass might be some work, I can make anything but usually utilitarian and not eye candy.:p

Whats your guess on cost for a floor for that?

Could be cheap or expensive, up to you really.

Marine Ply v. Arauco Ply v. Exterior Ply

Poly Resin with glass v. Epoxy v. Porch & Floor Paint

$1000 - $100

All acceptable (though a bit of a hot topic around here).

I've been doing a lot of reading on the site, checking the options. Your Islander thread is great so far, I'm on page 38, I keep wanting to skip to the last page to see how it turns out.
