Best winterizing technics after this winter ?

Cant wait to hear how everybody's technic worked after seeing my new RV antifreeze sitting outside new unopened gal jugs seemed frozen fairly solid with jug expanded in Ohio -15 this AM ? I followed the air can't freeze and drained but not pulling the engine water pump hose I hope all I can loose is water pump . We'll hear how many fared this spring with replies of engine block repair and JB sales . All we hope for is less insects and mosquitos here plus lower fuel oil prices .I hate when I have to open compact fridge in barn to keep from freezing top shelf Genesee when I run oil FCE

This RV antifreeze says its rated to -50 but don't believe after this morning as I usually stored in side unheated barn before and was never this cold .

I think it does a little better when inside the RV though, as the RV does provide some insulation. I have never had an issue with mine and we get below zero every winter here.

RV anti freeze (the pink stuff) does/will freeze. It just does not expand when it freezes.

So first of all, sounds like that was a really weak mix of antifreeze/water. Around 40% or so. 50% would have moved it to -37, and 55% goes to -50.

But in the bigger term, propylene glycol expands MORE than water, actually substantially more (around 20%) The key is that the freeze point is so much lower that the expansion can safely happen much slower, so if it actually does make it to the point where it freezes solid, it won't break anything.

In your case, you also had a sealed environment, which is why the jug expanded out. Had the seal been broken and the cap was loose, it would have expanded up.

Im hoping the "air dont freeze" technique is accurate... it's been so freaking cold this winter,,I've been stomping around earth for 52 years,,,this winter is a memorable one...10 degrees outside now... I went with Bondo's recommendation that air dont freeze and cast iron does very nice empty.. I removed my plugs and drained block and manifold, removed top water hose and used my air compressor back in Oct to blow it out.. I cupped my hand around the opening and blew away, nothing but air came out the bottom... obviously no one's gonna get out 100 percent of the water...pretty sure I'm ok with the little bit laying in there,,, will find out in March, maybe

Im with you Jimbo.......I normaly use the pink stuff for peice a mind.........But i didnt do it this year, Air only... and im glad i didnt with the lower than normal temps we have had this year...and seeing the pink stuff on the shelf in the garage freeze.

What happend to Global warming.......atleast not in the midwest!

Butt cheek pucker time come spring.............Im sure many will chime in on the air dont freeze theory.... well, shall I say... fact.......I will be reporting if she fires up come spring............ Global warming.........wow... gonna moderate here to 20-30 for day time high,, wooohooo! funny how ones perspective changes on what's cold... use to complain about 20,, now it's welcome.......

my boat's in the water and I have been keeping the motor down (OB) during these cold snaps of teens at night, 20's in the day. But the creek hasn't frozen where the boat is; a little slush one day, but then again we've had 20-40 mph winds so the wave action keeps it from freezing; there's some ice in the sheltered coves.
meanwhile 200 yards across my cove, my neighbor has the same OB--a 150 yam--and he has never lowered his for about 10 years; I'v ebeen there 6.
So we'll see come spring if he has LU issues, and whether dropping the motor to keep the LU from freezing is necessary here.

I grew up on this cove and have seen it frozen across a few times and frozen 20 yards out from shore many times--so this "unusually cold" weather isn't as bad as it has been before.

I drain my blocks but then put in 5 gallons of straight -50 degree antifreeze through the muffs at 800 rpm's so any where that the water went, so to will the anti freeze go. Firstly to help with any possible chance of freeze (however small) and secondly to help with any possible internal rusting. I just do whatever I can do to baby the boat and the engines. I'm an overly firm believer in preventative maintenance however small the potential benefit.

empty, or antifreeze.......both work...... it's the "oh crap" I forgot to drain it catagory that will be spending tax returns on a new motor

If you to use AF....properly...you should be draining, poking holes and then backfilling....I use the -100 expensive stuff, it will not start to get soild till -60F*, so no worries. The gallons I had in the garage were all still liquid, at zero and a little below....

I make sure I have a supply of just the right mix of Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Carbon dioxide, Neon, Helium, Methane, Krypton, Hydrogen, and Xenon gases to follow the water down as everthing drains.

Propylene Glycol turns slushy long before it freezes solid and gets solid a a very low temperature. Lower than it ever gets in the lower 48 states ore in Canada near the border. It's fine for most situations. But what would I know, I never use it in my Canadian stored boat. I just get the water out before I put the boat away in the fall and then put the boat back in the water when the hockey rinks have all melted.

Maclin, I've never tried adding Krypton to my air antifreeze mix. Does it have the same affect as the Xenon or do they work better together?

I just let the 85hp evinrude down so it drained, and the 9.9 hasn't been wet since the impeller change when it snows i've been keeping the tarp that covers the Larson swept off so it don't cave in, and the 12' tin is stored upside down the 58 wizard is in the garage,heated

My 5 car tandem garage has the I/O stored in the back, with my daily car out front behind the door. My car thermometer said 28 degrees when I fired it up, but the dash gauge dropped to -5 when i got a block down the street. That was the coldest morning for us this year, and the first time the garage went below 32.

Gotta love those attached garages.

That is all I have ever done for mine, have never had a problem.
Unfortunately I'm sure some blocks are done in the south which was surprised this winter with the extreme cold.
