Re: Boat I bought to restore

Hey Rob I noticed something in one of your pics that I don't know what it is or where it goes. Theres a pic of the cockpit area facing forward, in the lower right of the pic is a battery, in the center right is a fire extinguisher. What is the fire extinguisher sitting on? What its sitting on looks like it has a sliding glass window, is there a sleeping area below this glass or is it ventilation air to the engine compartment? Thanks for the pics.. I hope to one day have a boat of this size.

That is the roof of the aft cabin, which also doubles as the base for the captain's chair. It is part of the one piece hull cap.

Progress is moving well. The gimbals are just about rebuilt. new everything.
The motors are almost finished as well, My friend owns a machine shop and is doing the work. I will post pics of the motors once I paint them.

One of my laborers stripped off all the decals and the stripes, and sanded the hull bottom and the gray hull sides. The hull sides are going to be painted blue. I am going to use Epifanes 2 part polyurethane, and use an ablative on the hull bottom.

I've reupholstered the cabin parts and they are ready to go back in. Once they go back in, I can put the motors back in.
Lots on the list.

Will post pics of the motors soon.

Later!

This the the project I would be after...whenever I finish mine that is.

Keep up all the good work. Maybe one day I can buy it off of you when you do a 60 footer :)

Ha ha 60 footer, that's a good one! This project is big enough! Maybe in 25-30 some odd years when I retire I could do a 60 footer. That would be a heck of a project though wouldn't it?

I watched a guy on the Detroit River in Grosse Ile near where I dock my boat paint his 60+foot hatteras while it was moored in the harbor though. He just had a big raft and worked like that.

Anyways, I got the motors back from the machine shop, here's a few pics. I painted them Chevy orange to give them a different look than factory mercruiser black..

So those are the freshly rebuilt and painted motors.

And not to worry, I am drinking plenty of beer!

Wow
I would love to do all the cosmetic stuff you are doing but you can knock yourself out on all that mechanical stuff. Yuk!
I will definitely follow this rebuild!

My wife would let me do this project on one condition (it would have to fit in the garage) so i guess the only solution would be to build a bigger garage. Now to find the project boat.

It would be a cool project to do a 60 footer wouldn't it? That's why would should be super thorough and sell to me eventually :)

Re: Boat I bought to restore

$1000 you got yourself a steal there...yes its alot of work....
amazing how one owner can just TRASH a boat such as that.....
more money than brains right? lol

(small hijack)we were looking at a 42" Sonic offshore racer as a 1rst boat resto-flip...18k asking price..1991 model.......the new ones same size go for $350,000
woulda cost a mint to restore....but the opportunity for profit was high...we didn't get it tho.

So far yours is about the biggest actual resto I've seen on Iboats.
Rob can you post a pic or 2 of the topside deck area looking towards the transom from the captains cockpit...thnx
Great job and keep posting pics!!!!!!!!!!
:D

Re: Boat I bought to restore

Thanks for the replies everybody, yeah this is one heck of a project, and I have been working on the boat but time just isn't on my side sometimes. The boat's progress is rolling along very well and it will be in the water this April. I haven't posted in awhile because I have just been so busy with work, school, wife, boat, etc...

Anyways, here's some new pics of progress.

Here the transom assemblies are in and fiinished, and I also rebuilt the trim cylinders so hopefully I won't have any leaks come launch time! All ready for the new outdrives. I got two new sterndrive engineering units and they look really nice!

So I got the motors in, and partially rigged, exhaust in, new fuel lines, etc...
I had the same guy sand the sides that did the bottom, and he did well. Hopefully I can put a coat of paint on in a couple of weeks but it has been really cold here the last couple of days so the building is only about 55 degrees. I'll just have to wait a week or so.

Yeah, it is also convenient having the BIG building that I am very lucky to have. The warehouse I am in is a 8000 s.f. section of a 20000 s.f. building, and the entire building is over 57,000 s.f., I will be sad when the day comes that I no longer have this space to work in.

Re: Boat I bought to restore

Well, I worked on wiring this past weekend and a little bit this week and got the circuit panels in the cockpit rewired, and I got the motors wired and rigged up.
This coming weekend I hope to get the paint done. I am going to primer it tomorrow night, then try and get a coat of paint on Friday evening. We'll see how it goes.
Anyways, here are some pics of the wiring...

These panels took about 5 hours on Satutday!

These two engine pics are reposts, but this is the wiring on them I completed awhile ago, they took a Saturday!

Well, Most of the wiring now complete....time to paint..

I will hopefully have some pics of that for this next week.

I got some good deals lately, I was shopping at target and got a new pioneer cd player for $50. I have a hd tv antenna and new vhf and plenty of other goodies to install..

I also got plenty of lighting as well..
I have to get going on finishing the paint so I can get the cabin re-assembled.
Time to buy more beer so I can get started

Thanks everybody again for the kind words! It's keepin' me going!

Later
Rob

Re: Boat I bought to restore

Hey Photoman!, thanks, I wanted to make it look nice, like someone knew what they were doing.
The engines are just painted with the spray can chevy orange hi-heat paint. It looked really good in my spray booth that has full spectrum lights but once it got out the color lost some of its lustre. It still looks good though.

I have Epifanes two part polyurethane for the hull sides, and I actually got the primer and one coat of paint on. Tomorrow I have a slower day at work so I am going to get coat two on. It just takes an hour to get the building up to temperature until I can paint. The paint has been going nicely and looks great so far. I have been rolling it on with a foam roller then tipping it off with a badger hair brush. I am impressed so far with the progress of the paint.

Anyways, I am going to post the pics in the next post..

Here's a pic of the boat in primer

Here's one of the boat with coat one of paint!

Here's one of the cockpit in paint, I removed the helm and cabin door to paint them, they are going to be a mocha like brown color and the rest of the cabin will be oyster white.
The mocha brown will match the same color whisper fake leather in the cabin.
