Re: Boat Shopping SUCKS

If you really want a Crownline 21' then check out Hern Marine in Ohio. They had some left overs 2012's they were making great deals on. My sister just traded in her Tahoe for one.

+1 for Hern, this is my go-to marina. Great people over there.

I don't really find the markup comment to be true, at least in the boats I was looking at. The prices that the Malibu dealer was selling their used boats for were in line with the private market. The sales tax thing is a huge deal though, buying private party saved me $4K in sales tax.

Oh man, I'm trying to think of a good, outrageous, analogy as to the unbelievable mark up on the under 20 foot bowriders I see at dealers. The prices on them are almost incomprehensible they are so off base. I've gotten used to buying cars used from the dealer because there are just so few private party sales but I don't see that as likely with a used boat. If there is a way to avoid paying a single penny more to the thieving government such as it can be with used boats, I will usually do it. It's one of the main reason's I bought my 4 wheeler slightly used. It cost me 50 dollars payable to the robbers for registration versus a lot more in sales tax.

I bought my pontoon from a dealer in Arizona. They had it for quite a few months so just they wanted to unload it. Got it for less than private parties were getting for theirs. They were asking $17K and I got it for $13K.

I took over a year looking at Craig's List and dealer lists in the Topeka, Wichita, Kansas City area. I finally got a creampuff 1998 Lowe 175 bass boat with a 60 hp Evinrude from a dealer in Kansas City area. It had great compression and the dealer insisted I try it out on a nearby lake before I gave him money. The dealer also replaced a couple of gauges with new ones. When I wanted to add an additional depth finder, the dealer showed me his profit on depth finders and said if I could get one cheaper at Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc. to buy it and he would install it. I bought the depth finder at Bass Pro and he installed it including the new wiring and routing the wires to the depth finder for a little less than $90. The boat was on consignment. Take your time and check the lists often. There are some good folks out there.

Every time I see this come to the top I hope it's because the OP (aka Lumberg) found his boat. Eventually I'm sure you will.

I love looking at boats on craigslist, either you end up buying it or you get a good story tell. I could go on for hours with craigslist stories.

Re: Boat Shopping SUCKS

Funny thing I've bought my last 3 boats via Craigslist, but never sold one of my old ones in Craigslist. As far as selling, I tried CL, but just go to many tire kickers, buyers w/o money that wanted me to finance. And of course the brokers trying to sell it for you.. Boat Trader cost , but at least I received calls from a more boat-educated sector, even if they never panned out. Believe it or not I ended up selling my last 4 boats by posting for sale signs on them and using peg boards at the marinas. As far as buying, I've had cutty cabins, runabouts, pontoons, cruisers and off shore boats. Seems I change every few years if I get bored with one style. I can say it's taken up to 6 or more months of looking to find what I wanted in the condition and price range I had set. And they are out there on CL, but first rule is to be patient, don't get emotional or fall in love with any boat, that means never take the wife for the first look. Know the boats high/low value before looking, know what to look for, assume seller is a used car salesman, inspect & verify everything yourself, I tend to stay from any ad that advertise standard maintenance items like new battery, new impeller, new starter, fresh oil, XX hours on rebuilt engine, etc.. None of that adds value, just tells you a lot of stuff was broken and may mean boat was not running prior and has been bandaged up for a sale. Most important walk away from a lousy financial deal. There are too many out there to settle. If at all possible keep your old boat till you get a replacement, takes a lot of pressure off the buying process.

Been a lot of "activity" on the boat sale front the last couple days
3 people asking how many hours are on it - the ad clearly says that there is no hour meter on the boat
4 people responding with nothing but - what is your bottom dollar, best price, etc
1 guy who seemed somewhat interested and said he wants to fire the boat up - it is currently -12F

I would say fine but he would have to put up the cost of rewinterizing it upfront. Schedule a time with a local dealer to have it winterized. Fire it up for the seller. If he buys it the winterization cost goes toward the purchase. If not you are not out anything.

How in the heck would you fire up a boat at -12F, you have any idea how fast water freezes at that temp? The water would never get from the house to the boat, heck you couldn't even roll out a garden hose at that temp ;)

I guess I should have worded it differently. When I said make the appointment I meant to take it to their shop and run it inside.

Yeah, I guess I don't want to sell it badly enough to take it out of storage and to a dealer (I don't use dealers for anything) to fire up a boat in March.

How about running it on antifreeze in your garage? Otherwise if he'll go for a deposit that would be the best route for you.

I think my best route is to let the tire kickers wait until April, people who buy boats in the middle of the winter do not get to start them.

I did! But I'm a slacker and forgot to update this thread, I just started a new one. Ended up getting a really nice Monterey 228si in the DFW area. Thread on the topic is here: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topics-questions-not-engine-topics/new-boat-638652.html

I always figure that if the reply doesn't include at least one semi-informed question then it's probably a scammer and I ignore it. As for the running, I agree with the antifreeze comment. $10 worth of RV antifreeze in a 5 gallon bucket will run the boat enough to determine if it runs smoothly. If they want more than that, the buyer could probably pay a local shop to run it in their heated shop on muffs, then winterize after the test is complete (at their expense of course). Where there's a will, there's a way!
