Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Thanks for the map and tips Skargo. I'm not sure what time I'll make it down there either but maybe I'll see you down there.

I want to get down there as soon as I can but I got to get 2 little ones ready and we'll be out the door. I'm hoping to be down there by around 10.

Here's the Sunday tide levels for the area:

Tides for Charlestown, Northeast River - September 6, 2009.
Day High Tide ... Height .... Sunrise ............ % Moon visible
/Low Time ....... Feet ...... Sunset

Su 6 Low ... 6:26 AM .... 1.2 .... 6:37 AM Set 8:34 AM... 98%
6 High ...... 11:53 AM .... 2.9 .... 7:27 PM Rise 8:04 PM
6 Low ....... 6:39 PM .... 0.7

So that means high tides are 11:53AM and 7:27PM. Use them to your advantage.

Skargo/ Brandon-
I'll have the Jonboat Sunday. Maybe you'll see me fishing the back channel.....
Not sure if I'm staying overnight. Probably won't decide until Sunday evening. Feel free to hail me or cruise over here.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Man it got windy yesterday after the races. I took the channel by furnace bay and ran aground(slightly) near carpenter's point. We picked up grass on the prop making it seem like we spun the prop. We slowly made out way into the channel and after a couple blasts of the throttle in reverse, the blades cleared and all was good.
It was even super shallow outside the speed limit markers in front of the Nauti-Goose, we followed two go fasts out and when they took off they shot mud up.

That wind overcomes the tide for sure!

Here's my limited pics of the races, mostly Jersey Speed skiffs.

I was out yesterday hanging out at the flats to the left of where the barges were parked. We headed back about 4 when it started getting cloudy and since that was my first time there I took the long way back allllll the way around to Turkey PT. I was following a 25-27 foot Sea Ray and the waves were still 4 to 5 foot. It was a rough ride back to the Nauti Goose but we made it.

We didn't go out today because of the wind and it being only 60 something down there. I passed a 14 foot aluminum heading in when I was in the channel heading back and I said I wouldn't want to be him.

Its definitely nice down there and I wouldn't mind heading back down there to do some fishing.

We go that route all the time, kind of a circuit, take the long way in, short way home, or vice versa. 4-5' though? I was out off Turkey pt once and thought to myself that I was in that big of water, but talked myself out of it when I got back to the dock.

I took the long way in and the long way out because I met my buddies brother by the barges but he had to leave early. 4-5' was over rated but they were at least 3 feet and some were 4' when the guys were rushing to get in. I just stayed behind the bigger boat and he was only going 10 MPH if that so it took awhile to get back.

When we got closer to Elk Neck they calmed down a lot and it was smooth sailing the rest of the way.

I know I offered earlier to show you the back way, I'd have been mighty embarrassed if that had happened and we both ran aground hehehehe

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Glad that you guys had a good time and that all made it back safely. We were out Sunday night some with my sister trying to teach her how to waterski but it was pretty rough. I was up for a little bit but it beat you up pretty good.

Monday we were out most of the morning. It was rough!! We went over to the Elk River to do a little bit of crabbing and ended up going through white caps just to get there. My wife wasn't to happy about it but she survived and was a good sport. Wasn't a good day for the crabs though.

Arks - I tried hailing you on Sunday evening about 7:30 or so. Guess you already headed home. Hope you out of town work goes well.

Skargo - I tried hailing you a couple of times on Monday but didn't get any answers. We you out? We probably tried around 9 am and 1 pm.

I installed my new fixed mount VHF and antenna and it recieves perfectly but not sure about transmitting yet. I assume it works, just want to double check.

Should be down again this weekend from Friday night to Sunday night. Celebrating my Farther-In-Laws birthday all day Sunday with the family. Should be a great weekend as long as the weater holds out!

Do you have a name on the boat? I thought that I say one that looked like yours pulling into Anchor Marina Sunday late afternoon but I couldn't tell for sure! I think the name on it was "Stress Reliever"

Glad you liked the bay!

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

We did NOT go out Monday Brandon. I too was worried about my transmitting, but I did a couple radio checks and all is good.

We ate at the promenade grille the past 2 evenings to at least look at the water. This evening it was GLASS of course. Not a single trailer at HDG ramp, and we only saw 3 boats the whole time we were eating.

We'll be out next Sunday, maybe a run up the Sass, or the Bohemia, or canal, who knows?

Any of you guys on facebook by chance?

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

A good friend of mine just put a contract on a house in Pasadena, MD in a neighborhood with water access (boat ramp, don't know what else). I'm looking forward to doing some bay boating next year from there. I've already found a nice Starcraft on craigslist for my friend to buy :) Anyway, what do you guys know about the bay in this general area http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Pasadena&state=MD&address=423+Virginia+Ave&zipcode=21122 Any good destinations nearby? On water restaurants?

We'll be out and about Sunday ;)

Yep, we will too! My wifes family will be down to celebrate my fater in laws 50th birthday! Probably hit Nauti Goose up for brunch. We will probably go crabbing before that and then in the afternoon will be time for some watersports!

Have a wonderful and safe weekend everyone!

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Anybody else make it out yesterday? We were out in the morning on the Elk River catching some crabs, yummy!

Then we hit Nauti Goose for a late lunch and played around and cruised the upper bay some! Beautiful weather altough the water temp is starting to get a little bit colder.

What a great time! Hope everyone else had a great weekend!

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

We were out sat and sunday we had a great time weather could of been better on sat. fishing and crabbing was good. We were in the shipping channel east of shad battery shoal yesterday in 23' of water and hit something that lifted the back of my boat out of the water. took some paint off the drive and roughed the eges on my prop Whatever I hit left white paint marks on my drive. Thought I was in big trouble at first all i pictured was my drive being ripped off in the middle of the bay.....It started to get Rough on incomming tided around 12:00-12:30 stuffed my bow once and we headed back to the bush.

The guy who was in the slip next to us caught a 2' 1/2" bull shark 1/2 mile NE of pooles island sat evening and had pictures to prove it.

We got back home late last night i was in my boat taking coolers out and when i was getting out i was in bear feet and slipped off my trailer fender and i basicly fell under my trailer and my foot got stuck in the roller brackets. I broke 2 toes and got a bunch of stitches on the bottom of my foot from the big toe "ball" to the pinky toe and fillet the middle of my foot "no skin" Fun Fun:eek:(at that time I actuall thought I ripped my foot off)) No work today...I wanted a long weekend but not under these surcumstances.;)

Feals a little better than this morning. popped a few stiches from walking to the potty:eek:. Self medication with coors helped alot..LOL

Gonna try to get to work in the morning. Sitting around the house with the wife all day doesn't help either:D I keep forgetting im not 21 anymore I gotta slow down.

I always carry a ladder to get in and out of my boat when its on the trailer and this is the first time i didnt use it....never again
Thanks,
Denny
