Yes, welcome, but the question in mind is: Why were you doing 70 with a trailer behind you? Not only does it use up a godawful amount of gas but most trailers I have seen recommend no more than 45. Personally, I stretch it to 55 with a burst of 60 if needed to pass. Generally though I take it slower than when not towing.

I bet it was really a hand full to keep under control. I have had a very few flats of any sort and never one while towing.

I did once have the axle on a one ton truck get lose and start out of the rear end. It was funny I was at a very low speed delivering some supply's to a mine and it felt funny and I looked in a side mirror to see the duel wheels about 3 foot out away from the truck still bolted to the axle..

Looks like you need a whole axle kit--springs and all. ChampionTrailers.com over in Dallas area sells them online.

on the photo showing the right side, it looks like the trailer frame is bent, too--forward of the axle?

So now you see the inside of a part that is dunked in salt water. Can happen inside the frame, too.

Looks like you already have a fix for it, Tandem axle to boot. :)

I hate to rub sand into an open sore but this is a good example of why folks need to stick their heads under their trailers -- OFTEN -- and especially if most of the dunkings are in salt water. This trailer needs a complete new suspension and a very thorough inspection of the frame with a ball-peen hammer. The springs are a dead giveaway as to the amount of rust on this suspension. It appears the tires are 12 inch and may be overloaded as well. If the inner and outer bearings on this axle are 1-1/16 inch then the axle is a 2000# capacity which is definitely overloaded. Just pointing out some IF scenarios.

By the looks of photo #3, you can't claim it was a surprise!

It is hard to find the fresh metal that fractured off.
It looks like you were looking at the side of the spindle, inside of the axle, through large rust holes for a long time.
What is surprising is that it stayed on as long as it did.

I agree this is a 1976 boat and the trailer is the one the boat came with I just got the boat 4 days ago first time taking her out. I'm not new to boats. Thanks for the warm welcome here. It's good to have people to talk boats

Hmm.............Where did you get that? Been following a lot of U-Haul trailers around?

Had a look at Shoreland'r, EZ Loader. Load Rite, Magic Tilt, Boatmate and Magnum Trailers and none suggest a max towing speed except "the speed limit"

No state has a towing limit lower than 55 mph and some states have limits as high as 75

http://www.towingworld.com/articles/TowingLaws.htm

Trailer Speed Limits | AAA/CAA Digest of Motor Laws

The only 45 mph speed limit I could find refers to towing a mobile home.....

I routinely tow my boat at 65 MPH (although the limit in Wa is 60)

Now, having said all that, I wouldn't have towed the original posters trailer at ANY speed.

Yeah.......

You place yourself at great risk physically and for liability!

Intentionally towing a rusted out piece of junk down the road, at high speed could make you liable for damages and injuries to others that your insurance might not fully cover because of obvious negligence. ("Slip & Fall" lawyers just LOVE this sort of thing!!)

I know if I had someones tire go through my windshield from a boat trailer like that, and there were injuries or a death (like one of my family) , I would probably own their house after the trial and get an injunction for after they got out of jail.

I've been driving truck for a living for the past 5 years-I consider anybody on the interstate doing LESS than 64-67 mph a hazard. But that trailer shouldn't have been on the road.

Not that I'm endorsing towing obviously deficient trailers, but liability insurance covers drunk drivers going the wrong way on a one way road with their headlights off through a red light... yet you believe it wouldn't cover a wheel coming off a trailer?

Re: broke a axle today at 70mph

Wow I'm not trying to get slammed here all I was tring to do is show everyone that no mater how something looks or how many new parts are on it things can go wrong I had new hubs new bearings new tires and did not know axel was bad. So thank y'all for all the........ The rest of the trailer looks like it did 37 years ago solid like when it was new so no I never look at the axle

It absolutely would cover a tire coming off a wheel but liability insurance does have limits and when one of those lawyers I mentioned above wants to sue and there's a death due to alleged negligence..........it gets ugly......

I mentioned the above example because when someone dies, the lawyers go into a frenzy.........they go into a frenzy even when there isn't a death..... (remember the lawsuit because someone spilled McDs coffee in their lap?) When they smell liability, there's not a lot that stops them and liability insurance limits are just a number.........
