Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

A friend of mine from T Bar flew out there this weekend and took this pic of Decision Island and emailed it to me. We hung out on the sandy peninsula that's now under water quite a few times last summer.

It's always been one of those beaches that get kinda crowded because of it's proximity. It had some nice sand, but the crowds and the fact that most of it isn't protected from the north takes it off my top 10. We went there last year because we lost 'Gilligan's Island' which was south of Mushroom and Mushroom itself wasn't very good with the water coming up into the tumbleweeds and rocky shoreline. It should be real good this year though.

Here's a pic of a section of the peninsula last year. The right side (best side and well protected, behind me not shown) was always taken as someone always left their stuff there even if they missed a day. The sand was excellent along the majority of the beach. It was a great place to hang out and a good take-off spot for all the water sports.

Thanks for the pics 12V.

Yup, I've seen portable canopys, chairs, etc., left on some of the best beaches so someone could reserve their spot, from weekend to weekend. We stopped at 2 beaches last summer with old riff-raff that had been there for months on end, sun rotted and shredded canvas. I considered hauling it up to the dumpster, but didn't want to haul around garbage all day. In retrospect, I should have as it's probably submerged by now....

If you're a member of FB, here's some priceless video you can check out from 1983 at Temple Bar when the lake was at it's fullest, 1225.44'.

The first is getting ice when the ice station was actually lower than the water level and had to be barricaded with sandbags: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=116338545057202&set=o.113620393101&type=3&theater

This one was taken after a section of the Temple broke loose. I know the folks who shot the video, and they said when the initial wave came it flooded over by the hotel. The baby, Carl in the video is 31 now: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=116331781724545&set=o.113620393101&type=3&theater

Here's Hoover Dam during all of this: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=116322965058760&set=o.113620393101&type=3&theater

That trailer, the 'Comfort Station' as they called it had no air conditioning, and so you can imagine what it was like in 100+ degree heat. It's no longer there. There's a REAL restroom there now. :)

The reason for the waves was that a chunk of the Temple across the bay fell off into the water causing a mini tidal wave. That's what they were doing with tractor. How about that old motorhome by the hotel! The tractor had to pile up a dirt embankment to keep it from getting swamped

^^^ LOL

Right answer to the wrong riddle. That would be the answer to " What's in the video, but is no longer there." :D

(That would be too easy though)

When I was looking at the video I thought "HEY! the ________ isn't in the video" Well, it's not there anymore either. It used to be there, 10-20 years ago..........

Cool footage at T-bar.

The water barrier? Just a guess, I can't imagine that's gone.

Wasn't there a Boat Dock at one time on the lake side? I don't see that.

Ok,thanks for the info,i was also wondering about the trailer 110.still confused about the waves though.there were alot of sand bags around the ice station, being on its own in the middle was strange.Did they know that piece was going to fall and got ready for it?I once was fishing in a cove recently when a piece of the cliff fell down near where my boat was and it made a bigger wave than i ever thought it would. It was scary.
