Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Ok,thanks for the info,i was also wondering about the trailer 110.

You mean the Silver Bullet on the corner? Is got taken out about 4-5 years ago when it sold. The new owner put in a real nice place, but it was hard to see the old Silver Bullet leave. It was one of the original trailers.

EDIT: I just looked at the video again and see they are in 110. Yes theirs is still there. Carl hangs out in our group on the lake sometimes when we're out there at the same time.
At the beginning of the video when they pull around the corner, the first trailer on the end is the Silver Bullet I was referring to that is gone.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Here's the deal if I have the challenge right. It was not in the Video, and it is not there now, but it was there in between. If the pic above is the hint, then like 12V, there is something there (it) that that was not there in 1983, and it is not there now. So I have been scouring pics since the bypass went in. Are we at least on the right track? Looking for it above?

That building in the foreground?

We have a winner!!!

You and your family win an all inclusive trip to,,, Temple Bar Resort and Marina on fabulous Lake Mead, the jewel of the desert! (Exclusions; winner must pay for all transportation costs to and from the resort destination, winner must stay at their own place, eat out of their own fridge, drink their own beer, use their own boat. Anything not explicitly stated is excluded. A complimentary adult beverage will be provided. LOL)

The building in the foreground, I stopped by that store on my first trip to Vegas back in 89' or 90'. I was surprised to not see it in the video as it looked like it had been there forever, kind of run down looking as I remember it. I think it went bye-bye when the dam security was tightened up back in 01, or when they turned that parking lot into paid parking.

QC, I have no idea what that white dome thingy is and it's probably in not in the video. So as second prize runner up, you are awarded the same prize at the contestant winner.

Hopefully see you guys at Temple Bar this summer so I can "pay-up" :D

That is so cool! I've never won anything before! haha

I think that's when they opened the place at the top on the AZ side. Maybe the same building, they just keep moving it around.

That picture made me realize I haven't been over the dam in close to a year and a half! That bridge and the new highway is GREAT!

Lucky you are 12V! (Don't stop by a casino thinking that luck will rub off though...)

QC was lucky too. The contest didn't have provisions for 2 correct guesses, so we had to award 2 Grand Prizes.

Come to think of it, I think you are right, that shack moved up to the top of the hill. I don't think the old patio/veranda made the trip up the hill though, dunno? That used to be a cool place to hang out and drink a soda, check out the dam. There used to be HUGE 4' catfish swimming right below the store, when that exposed shelf in the pic was under water.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I haven't been across the dam since they opened the bridge either, sure is nice as it chops 15 minutes off the trip.

I'm going to take my kids to the dam in the next month or so. There is a bike/hiking trial on the old railroad bed going from Mead's main entrance all the way to the dam. Supposed to be a cool trail since there are 6-7 tunnels, it's about 5 miles long. Ride over to the parking garage, mess around at the dam, ride over to the bridge and walk across it, ride back. Kids should dig it.

It will certainly be weird going to the lake, without a boat...

dan; nice easy walk. it's a old rail bed so flat and smooth. it's the rail from the gravle plant that you can see part of the way going back to the lake.

view form there looking back to lake
in this pix you can just see the foundation in the right near top. seen from the water in next post

Anyone have any pictures of this area before the lake filled up with water?I would like to see what all was there, and see where all the dam builders were living. Some were in tents i imagine,i cant see all those people living in boulder city at first.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

My first trip to Temple Bar was in July '85 by water; 2nd Houseboat trip for us. We put out at Echo in those days. Made a run to TB for beer late in the afternoon from Gypsum Reefs. Whacked a prop on the way back in the dark  I pulled naked skiers around the Mushroom the next afternoon. No clothes, no observer, the bad 'ole days

We were also up there on a HB trip in '87. Spent some time in Grand Wash. 1st time in Columbine with a HB. I skied past the Grand Canyon entrance buoy. Have it on video somewhere. Hit a piece of driftwood on a Ski and you can see it in the video. Need to look for that.

In July '88 I towed the boat to Temple Bar, launched there and met a Houseboat at North Howland Cove. They had come from Echo. Mrs. QC was 7 Months preggers with our first. We went from there to Columbine. Lost my wedding ring in Pearce Bay on a flippin' water weenie. I always say I know exactly where it is . . . Everybody on that boat got severe stomach flu. A few brought it with them, and whoosh. Mrs and I took it home with us. Somehow still a good memory.

We spent a lot of time down below Parker during the late '80's and early 90's. A place called Aha Quin. Late 90's a lot of time on Parker, but we went to Mead at least twice a year. And quite a few HB rentals then too. Almost every Memorial Day, and a few other times every year.

The Mrs.' family lives in Havasu now, so I've left the boat there almost exclusively since '08. Even then we towed to Mead, but I've missed it completely the last two years :( We'll see this next season. I hate to say that I'm getting pretty used to not towing 500 - 600 mile round trips. I guess that's gotten a little old after 27 years. I never thought I'd say that. Hmmmmm.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Thanks for the pic's Jax, hope to be seeing it for myself in a couple weeks.

QC, funny how some of the worst trips are the most memorable, then when you look back on it, you get a good laugh out of the situation...

Pierutrus, QC having a place or family place,,, or family (whatever it is) in Havasu is a better deal than Vegas/Mead. Launch ramps in the middle of town... Heck, you could leave work for lunch, do a couple laps around the lake, then go back to work. I know a couple business owners down there and they always wear shorts, year round, pretty kicked back atmosphere compared to some places. You don't see that much in Vegas...

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Yeah, I know this is a Mead thread, but a small Havasu Hijack (HH).

Despite it's reputation Havasu has everything. Midweek and winter are amazing there, and the party scene can be fun too. I think it is more like a mini Fort Lauderdale. As Dan notes, you can go down to the boat for an hour. If you had a slip especially. But I'll leave her in the Channel, and we go to lunch or go visit somebody in town, heck you can walk up to a Pharmacy and get a prescription filled, and then walk back down to the boat. You can take a short cruise over for a good lunch, or a long one for the same. There are Marshes, Canyons, Coves, even privacy if you know your way around. And there is a Lake/Water economy. It is depressed there for sure, but there are boat builders, dealers, High schools all closer than even Boulder to the water. I love remote Marinas, Temple Bar and Bullfrog are my favorite examples. There is nothing like that at Havasu except maybe Havasu Springs, and it just doesn't qualify even though there is a similar feel to the place. I guess even Golden Shores (Topock I40 Bridge) has a little of that feel too. So again, something for everybody at Havasu, just different dose levels.
