Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Any of you fine folks goin out for Memorial weekend?

Me and the family are going to be heading out for MD, on Monday. probably launch out of Hemmingway around 10 am. Who else will be out???

On another note:

I was fishing at willow beach last night, with no luck. Then went to Hemingway harbor to "the little dock" lol, and as I rolled up on it and shined my high beams to see if there was anyone on it, I saw it was completely empty. I was sooooo excited because that dock is never empty and its so small, if theres 3 to 4 people there, its pointless to try to get on it. Then, all of the sudden, as I got closer, I realized, the dock wasn't even in the gosh darn water :frusty: don't know when or why this was retracted, but just an FYI in case any of you fish in that area.

I heard there were grasshoppers migrating accross the region. Anyone get any samples on their car?

I had 2 black ones jump into my truck at willow, unfortunately I wasn't able to get one of them out because it jumped into the air vent near the gas pedal. so when I got back into town on the south west side, I cranked up the heater, and as it was chirping I heard its location move, it wouldn't move from the railing under my captain seat. So I had to stop at a car wash and vacuum it up.
It was pretty ugly, never seen dark black ones before.

We'll be out in the Temple Bay area

we were trolling and i heard my pole splash off the stern, as i turned around from driving i noticed it was still floating on top due to the cork handles.

One of "those" trips, eh'? I've had a couple rods go into the drink, even caught a couple of rods that were flying through the air.

Seen a bunch of them recently, a couple weeks ago they were thick at my house, though they have died off lately.

I'm stuck at home Memorial weekend so no Sandy Beach or GC get together for me...... Company coming into town....

The local weather reporter Ted Pretty showed radar from overnight this AM and it looked like a storm had passed through, he said he had to call the NWS before going on air for an explaination.....it was huge clouds of grasshoppers migrating west to east. We've had our fill of them...

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Hi everyone. I make a Mead trip every year and this year's trip is this weekend. I'm planning on heading out of Callville and running to Temple Bar. Based on maps, it looks like that's about 25 miles. Does anyone have any advice about this trip? Are there any hazards, besides the obvious, that I should watch out for? I figured we would set out at 10 mph and make a sightseeing trip out of it the first half and then let the kids tube for a while during the second half.

Hey there bako

At your sightseeing speed you'll undoubtedly see any reefs that could pose a problem. If you haven't done the trip to temple bar before, I would suggest you try exploring the south shoreline on the way there and the opposite side on the way back. That will add considerable milage to the trip, but there's a lot to see that can't be seen from out in the middle until you get close to shore.
Be careful in Danger Bay for rocks. The Gypsum Bays have some very cool, unique scenery. There are also other coves and bays along the way to check out.
If not familiar with that part of the lake bring a map if you don't have a gps on board.
Don't plan on fuel at Echo Bay unless you confirm they have some. The last I heard they were in the process of getting the fuel dock up and running again but I don't know if it ever happened.
Have a great trip and post pics and tell us how it was when you return.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

One of my favorite trips, but . . . the issue with that plan is crossing the Virgin Basin. No wind and it is the best experience ever on the water. Vast, and so big it almost surreal. I can't quite describe it, but there is something special about the crossing. However!!! If there is wind you may be in for a very scary experience. I have crossed countless times, and twice I have been seriously scared. What I usually do is run through the Narrows and get a peek outside into the basin. If it is flat (can't tell by conditions in and before the Narrows) then I go. If it is not, then I do some serious thinking. The risk is once you are over in the Temple Basin, if conditions worsen, you do not want to be "forced" to return. You need to be prepared to wait it out as long as necessary if things get bad. And it is very hard to determine how bad it gets before you can get all of the way back to the safety of the Narrows.

I do not want to discourage you in any way, as it is a wonderful journey. You just need to be aware.

Edit: posting same time as 12V. To me the issue is the crossing more than obstacles. Agree on Danger and Gypsum area. I like the long ride down into Bonelli as well.

Bako

+100 on the wind danger. I checked the weather outlook and it looks to be a beautiful weekend. Typical wsw afternoon breeze, low humidity, no, clouds and plenty of sunshine. Just keep in mind things can change. If you have a vhf radio, monitor ch 16. They will brodcast any extreme weather notifications, and if you're lucky you'll get to respond to a stranded boater who needs a tow in!

Great! Thanks everyone for the advice. I can't wait to get out and see new sights. We will definitely take pictures and watch for the winds. I know the chop can get pretty dicey and we will prepare with sleeping bags and temporary shelter if the weather gets bad. If any of you are out there, wave (preferably with more than one finger) and say hi.

hey guys, quick question about those VHF radios. I know I've read that you monitor channel 16 for the weather. But if something goes wrong, let's say you're stranded or someone needs help how do you call for help, or on what channel do you do so? I just bought my first the VHF radio from Bass Pro Shop, it's a floating one. but I haven't used it yet or even taken it out of the package.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Spent Saturday out at Lake Mead. Launched from Callville and ran to Temple Bar. Had lunch at the Temple Bar Marina. Took the kids tubing in the Virgin Basin. There were some really cool coves.

I have to say, I'm surprised (I shouldn't be) at the bozos at Callville. I saw people loading on the ramp one with a boatand then three buddies in SUVs and trucks 4 wide ion the ramp so no one could launch. I saw kids cliff diving with running boats a few feet away. I didn't see a single ranger out there.

Next trip, we will leave from Callville again but heading as far as we can towards the Grand Canyon. I know we have to stop beyond Temple Bar but Ithink there were plenty of cool things we missed. Seeing the Temple was really cool. The Virgin Basin was like glass. The wind wasn't too bad until we got back to Callville. In short, the kids had fin and it was a great trip.

Glad to hear you had a fun, uneventful trip - and you got to see QC's Virgin Basin glassy which is an awe inspiring site. Got any pics to post?

I'm headed out around noon and looking forward to some awesome lake time.
