Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Let me know if you see any 2000 sq foot houseboats for less than 75K. Couldn't talk the wife into the station wagon idea. She's not a fan of the back of the truck. I even used the sales pitch of the existing bedslide to make cleaning the house easier.

2000 sf?! haha, now that's a biggie! I do have some friends with a much smaller one for sale (50') that's currently dry-docked by Boulder. It's an older restored rental with an upgraded gen, wiring, exterior, etc. They've owned it for about 25 years and they're going a different direction in life. I've spend some great times on that boat and I'm sad to see them sell it. :( 12- 15K would probably get it ;)

...and there are slips available at T-Bar. They just rebuilt the old uncovered finger.

Hey that weekender works for me!

The Echo to T-Bar trip would be a great little adventure! Depending on your time frame I would go the 'long way' and do a couple days weather permitting on the shores of the Virgin Basin and then past T-Bar on and swing back around. You could make this a month long adventure pretty easily!

my thoughts exactly, wouldn't go to boulder basin and just pass through the greg basin. spend most of time in virgin basin and temple arm.
haven't been on water in V B and haven't been very far above T B. may be a couple of miles or so and that was a few years ago now.

keep and eye out for the old girl. likely to be a month though. when water warms a bit more. also canvas no longer blue. had replaced, there in boulder, but don't have pix of new. it's now white for sun reflection.

Just a positive word or two about the Boulder Basin . . . While I agree, Temple Basin and Gregg Basin for seclusion are best, Boulder can be cool for the opposite reason. If you actually want to see some people and strike up a few conversations the Sandy Cove area can be cool. There is usually a cruiser or two over there staying longer than a day, and I can imagine breaking up a trip by meeting new boaters could be cool as well. And if you would rather throw a hook instead of beaching, there are usually people in Wishing Well just enjoying the unique cove and each other. Another cool overnight spot is Castle Rock Cove. Very close to dam and Las Vegas Harbor, but again, cool if looking for less seclusion. Variety being the point.

Also, if you need serious work done, or want to try a restaurant meal anywhere but Temple Bar, then that is also a possibility at both Callville and Las Vegas Harbor/Lake Mead Marina.

Callville has an outdoor grill too where they give you a steak and you cook it if that's something you might like. I am guessing that's still there although I haven't checked in a quite a few years. Nice place for a sunset.

to much traffic for me. have always stayed and unloaded in boulder basin. always end up going up lake to get away.

thinking by starting at echo, will save miles on truck and get into lake sooner. coming down from north on I 15. save 100 mile or so on trip. might consider unloading at temple, but seems to make sense to start at echo for now

T B has a nice store where i can get bread milk and eggs if needed and good peeps there. have gotten help there before. also a burger if i get tired of my cooking.

went over to sons shop and got pix of 230 in her new dress

Did you have that top made locally? I have a missing section of the "Tent" and need to get it made. Not sure who to deal with for that in Vegas.

yes it was done there in boulder. i don't remember the name of the shop but its real easy to find.

its the last place going north on the boulder hi way as you leave boulder. its on the right, and there alway seem to be some boats parked there.

what you see in the pix are new front and back biminis and built from scratch screen-sun enclosure.
she fixed some seats also. i am happy with her work.

there was another fellow there in boulder and one in henderson on lake mead drive(i think thats the right street name. any way the street that goes past wallmart west marine and ends up at the lake by lake las vegas)

she had the best price, and for me the easiest place to get into to drop boat of the 3 i checked.

her dad makes clothes for the animated display robots that are out side, around vegas. he sews them out of sunbrela so they can stand the sun and weather. pirate cloths ect. if you could imagine cloths made from sumbrela material, you get the idea of how handy he is.

That's BC Canvas in Boulder. They do great work for a fair price. A friend just picked up their bimini 2 weeks ago. Very satisfied

I was thinking the same (do great work at a fair price), as their parking lot is always stacked up with boats. I've never been in there, but always see them busy.

Yeah, I know the one. It's past A&W and the guy with the all the truck beds. Always crammed with boats. I'm missing the section above the windshield. Asked PO about it and he didn't even know that he had the sides or back. I guess it would be handy to drop it there on the way home one trip back. Picks here-

^^ That's the place. For anyone needing any type of marine service or repair I can also personally vouch for Vogue Marine up off of Yucca St, same side of the highway going through Boulder. Great people and they have gone out of their way to be helpful. Very fair prices too.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to run a 14ft aluminum boat from lake mead marina to temple bar and survived lol.Gas,food and supplies would be a serious issue right!not to mention weather could cost you any of these along the way.planned right and weather permitting it would be a adventure!!!!What would be the most important you think?

I have a dual axle trailer too,and i was wondering if theres any tricks to keeping the tires from locking each other out as far as sharp turns in tight spaces.I thought maybe letting the air out of one set would help, what you think guys?

i would leave early in the morning when the lake is stilled off and make sure to get across the :D virgin basin:). i think if you make that, you'd be home free from there.

i tend to dock and tie on the port side, unless in finger slips. i know others that like to go to starboard because they can see better on that side.

not sure i understand your tire locking problem. when i have to turn to sharp the tires tend to skid and i'm thinking less air pressure would let them roll over more making it harder on side walls?????

I agree with jax, who I'm sure was referring to getting across Boulder Basin from LMM... Just leave early enough to get any traveling done in the morning hours. In the early Summer months, the lake is pretty predictable once there's a steady weather pattern locked in. a slight breeze in the morning from the north, then still, then15 mph winds pick up in the late afternoon from the sw. Fuel consideration is obvious once you reach the narrows which would pretty much be the point of no return once you get through. Sounds like a cool adventure. About 15 years ago I started putting together a plan for a 2 week 550 mile trip around the entire lake on pwc's, complete with a patio chase boat. Permits and insurance cut the head off real quick though.

I tie up on port as this is where the side door is for ease of loading/unloading.

Re: your tandem trailer jj, are you talking about the brakes locking up? I can disconnect mine,, being electric.

your right on 12 v

if you happened to get into trouble in the boulder basin, you can find a port at callvile. if your to far to get back to LMM.

again sorry for mistake and many thanks for correcting hope i'm not getting " seen-an-nile-ate-ed "

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

The warnings above are spot on. One thing I recommend for anyone that is considering crossing the Virgin Basin is to at least take a look outside of the Narrows before deciding. I have been on the Boulder Side of the Narrows when wind and water conditions indicated that a crossing would be bad. However, once I peaked out of the other side it was obvious that the Virgin Basin was glass from one end to the other.

Also, NEVER consider a smooth crossing as any kind of guarantee for the return. It can be soooo different in just an hour that I would recommend being prepared to spend the night if you have to. I have crossed near dark when I probably shouldn't have. You do not want any real pressure to make that decision if you shouldn't ;)
