Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

A friend of mine rents pontoons there and said there has been no tolerance this year if you get caught riding on the front, which is as it should be.

When I see it I have come close to tracking them down myself. Makes me crazy :(

I was going to comment on that... Parents letting their kids ride up on the bow is one of my pet peeves. Sure it might seem like fun and all, with the kiddies getting flung around like an E-ticket ride at Disneyland, but it's a recipe for disaster. I've seen it too many times, and I too have held back as I know my words of caution would fall on deaf ears.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

This is very sad!! As mentioned before these things need to be told to the new and rentals boaters before they launch..

When you rent a boat theres a video you watch which covers life jackets and right of ways and such but there should also be someone who is a safety person who comes aboard the boat and tells you all the stuff that only seasoned boaters know. This would have been first on my list for the pontoon boat.As it has two pontoons that take you right to prop city in this event.I am going to try to start a safety thing here in vegas on craigslist that will help with these kinda mistakes that take our loved ones away from us in only just a moment!!!! My heart goes out to there family,as i sit waiting to go to work i cant get that bad feeling out of my gut.Im glad that we all talk about this stuff and people read about it in this forum thanks to the wonderful iboats!!!!

Here's a cool recent satellite image taken last month of the lower Grand Canyon area, above Mead. You can easily spot Separation Canyon in the upper right portion as a 'knife slit' cutting across the mighty Colorado River bed.

Not sure why I haven't posted this before, but 12V's latest post got me to thinking. I read this book years ago, and it has stuck with me as very few have. Down the Great Unknown is one of the best accounts of Powell's expedition; some say better than Powell's own account. It is definitely worth the read if you are a Grand Canyon/Mead lover. It will help you understand the naming of Separation Canyon at a minimum . . .

That name is perfect! Because of the way it sounds it reminded me of my friend's boat's name, the Isle Do 'er

Sweet. What did you make the end holder out of? It looks like you carpeted 1/2 of a rubber tube or something. I'm actually looking for another system to hold all our off-road whip antennas. We probably have 20 or so. I use a rod holder now, but it's got styrofoam inserts that don't hold up to the jarring and the antennas are constantly popping out.

Wow! I was wayyyy off spotting Separation Canyon in my previous pic. I got to looking at it again when I saw QC's post and realized I was looking at the wrong area. I've been to S.C. and it's not nearly that far up the river!

Here's where it actually is:

Pool noodle of course :D

It's a 3" pool noodle, contact cemented down to a piece of (plywood or Starboard, don't remember), covered with Nautolex marine vinyl, then slitted with a fillet knife.

A friend of a friend rebuilt and repowered his boat over the last year. Heading out to launch from Boulder Harbor as a support boat (excuse to hit the lake) this coming Saturday. A bit too hot for me already but I will deal with it. :)

How was the lake, weather, temps? It's up into the 90's and nibbling at the 100* mark, so I think we may have a short spring this year.

I went up to UT camping/fishing with my daughter, freezing at night and 60's-70's during the day, even stopped to let her play in the snow up at 10,000'. (I wanted to go back when I stepped out into 90* temps back home.......)

Havasu claims another leg: Article

Grizzly read right there.

I'm putting a swim platform on my boat, and that's one of the reasons, keep people out of the drive/prop. It wouldn't do any good if the prop's spinning though..........

Hey, FD. Planned for this coming Saturday, but I am souring on the Idea quickly. He wants to leave here for the 1-1/2 trip to the ramp around 10:00 AM. Way too late for me to start. Forecast is a high of 95. I say head home by noon after 5 or 6 hours on the lake.

Hey, FD. Planned for this coming Saturday

 Guess I should read more closely :D

I'm with you on getting to the lake early, I'd rather be dealing with unforeseen issues (newly rebuilt boat...) when it's nice and cool, opposed to broiling in the sun.

Another accident on Havasu during the 15th annual Desert Storm Poker Run that was held from 4/24 - 4/27. Luckily no one was hurt this time apparently

I backed out of helping as did 2 of my friends, too late for all of us. I hope they have everything sealed up and have all of thier safety gear!

Great work on both boats, looks like we would have a showing off showdown if our boats were side by side lol. I bet that fuse panel costed a lot more than you thought it would.

When i first started going to mead i usto buy these cool big books, with lots of really cool big color pics, that talked about lots of mead stuff,i would read them at the lake mead lodge while it was 110 outside and i bought them at the lake mead marina for like $12.00.Powell was my favorite read ,what a journey they had right.they even seperated 2 guys left up the canyon toward the end of trip, but never seen again, indians maybe? I guess powell was going to slow, maybe they had no more cigs or alchol left.
