hi everyone,
Here is my latest problem. I winterized the boat today and I startd out by replacing the upper pump parts including the impeller on the seawater pump.

I went by the book everything went well except I had trouble when I was putting the lower on it hung up about an inch from the upper drive i jiggled it alittle it it mated up ( it kicked my butt). This was my 1st time doing this and i was very happy when done.

I continued on with the winterizing I put the the muffs on engine started well. I throtttled up and the prop started going in forward gear. I want back to neautral and it stopped. I then put it in forward the engine stalled Istarted it back up and put it in reverse and it stalled again. Here is a run down of this problem

1. seem to be in gear when you push the throttle button and throttle up.
2. stalls when put into forward or reverse
3. with engine off in forward gear if you move the prop by hand to the right you hear a click and if you move it to the left it free spins and it free spins both ways in reverse.
4. shifter is very stiff now was loose before
i dont know what i did wrong, I had the shifter in forward the whole time when i pulled the lower I did not mess with anything and I followed the directions.

I have not had any drive issues prior to this issue.

I even made shure the shifter on the lower was to the right (forward) before putting it back together.

I finished winterizing and tarping it because of time restraints and figured I wait and see what you guys think.

Please let me know what you guys think I need help with this one!!

thanks
Denny

Look at what is happening where the intermediate shift shaft engages with the shift coupler......
If they are not indexed becuase the intermediate shift shaft is too low, it means you left out the washer that fits over the shift shaft......;)
You will need to pull the upper & lower apart & put it on......:(

Or you failed to insure that the lower gear case stayed in forward by turning the prop ccw & the shift shaft cw & maintaing light pressure on the prop (ccw)......
Either way, you will need to drop the lower again......
Splitting the upper & lower is much easier when thge drive is off of the boat & on a bench.......;)

I never seen shift shaft washer and did not have extra parts as far as your second post im confused on what you are saying ( Im new to this) but what i can get is I most likely I moved it out of gear.

When mating up the upper and lower what is the best way to get the gears to line up? I did turn the prop to the right to try to line up the gears but nothing moved so I just giggled it and it slid in.

If I take it appart and try to put it back on right how can I tell i did it right without un-winterizing the engine. Or should I wait till spring?

You need to look & see if they are indexed....

If you turned the prop to the right, you took it out of gear.....
You must keep slight tension to keep it in gear.....
You can do this without unwinterizing....
When you have it right, the prop will lock turning ccw & freewhell & click cw in foreward.....
Reverse will be exact opposite....
You won't have to start the engine to do it......;)

do you meen bungee the shifter? the thing is the shifter did not move when I did the job, if I moved the shift shaft on the lower and changed the gear down there then hooked it up that is the reason Im out of wack ? (in gear in neautral stalling out when I go to f or r.

So now when I split it I will make shure the shift shafts are turned clockwise shifter in F I just wont touch the prop shaft this time.

use a bungee to hold tension on the prop while you are mating the surfaces back together......that will keep the prop in gear
