Re: changing 1 piston in 1987 evinrude 115

spent all day ,and night, sat and all day today putting it back together. dropped it in the river at 5:00 .runs great. thanks for everybodys help. I appreciate the input . now if she stays together...
it runs a lot smoother than it did before, but it still shakes a bit going idle speed .Is that just a 2-stroke thing. It aint bad but not as smooth as my truck motor idling

It won't be as smooth as your truck but the v4s shouldn't idle too rough. Might need some carb & timing adjustments.

Are you running double oil (25:1) and following the proper break in process? The first 10 hours of runtime are critical.

Cheers.

ok , I used it sat and sun . got about 8 hours on it. still idles a little rough but ran good the hole time till we came in close to the ramp ,I was going about 3500 rpms and reved it up .it took off ran real fast then i slowed down and it stalled . it would not crank over so I took off the hood and tried to spin the flywheel and it turned counter clockwise but it stopped going clockwise.so i turned it further counter clockwise ,bumped the key and it fired right up . still ran good then when we got to the ramp and I tried to drive it up on the trailer it seemed to be loaded up . mabey because the extra oil? I reved it up a second and it seemed good. checked the comp at home and 3 were 110 and one is 105. I had more compression before . maby because the rings are not seated yet?

Compression should be going up not down. You need to seat the rings. Make sure to not hold a constant RPM. Vary the throttle up and down and no WOT until after 10 hours run time.

It should not stall on a 25:1 mix unless your plugs are fouled. Pull them and chek em out. They should all look the same and have a light coating of oil/fuel.

What did you use to set the timing and spark advance? It still sounds to me like you have a carb or timing issue. All carb butterfly plates should be closed at idle and horizontal at WOT.

Take the time now to ensure that the carbs and timing are correct or you risk having the same issue that blew the motor in the first place come back.

checked the timing at idle. it was off and the roller on the throttle was off fixed it and adjusted the timing to about 4 degrees . still have to do the advance part . the book says you need some special tool . cant I have some one drive and check it? bad Idea?

By special tool do you mean a timing light? Search the forums here for joe reeves timing method. Its simple and accurate and can be done without needing to rev the motor above 5k rpm.

Right on. Once you've done the throttle linkage and timing adjustment please post back your results.

Cheers

got the timing set . that was easy. still seems to idle a little rough. the timing was off .still havent floored it .went out today and yesterday.it almost coughs idling every now and then. not a lot and it doesnt stall but seems like it will. I think the idle is a little high now. not in gear but when I put it in neutral .maby its all the extra oil?

It's not the extra oil. My engines will run smooth as ever on 25:1, they smoke like heck but run fine.

If it "sneezes" a bit at idle it may be a lean fuel mix on one or more cylinders. Check all the fuel lines for cracks or loose fitings. An air leak into the fuel supply system can cause that symptom.

Also check the fuel filter + connections at fuel hookup line on the motor.

Idle should be around 650-700RPM in gear and 850-900RPM at idle, in the water.

Remember to re-torque the head bolts and steering connections after 20 hours of runtime post rebuild.

Re: changing 1 piston in 1987 evinrude 115

I cleaned the carbs and adjusted the timing.was running real good stopped and fished a couple of times then i kept going out the river ,was going about 3800 rpm ran perfect ,slowed dowm right before going in the gulf for about 2 minutes then hit the gas .it took off then sputtered and died .turned around it kinda started but would not run . ended up running the batt dead trying to get it running. drifftrd back up the river untill I got towed in. the next day I started it right up and it seems to run fine. any ideas?
