I hear ya, Funny how that happens eh? :)

Yep, something around 40 happens along the lines where my kid can put a nice dent in my wife's suv and I don't go crazy anymore. Starting to see the bigger picture a bit more with things.

OK...I don't get it. Why would you not allow shoes in your own boat? Are you allowed to wear shoes in your car?

Really depends on the type of boat and the location/weather. If you're going out for a late Fall cruise in a runabout, I highly doubt you want to be barefoot in 40-degree temps. If you are fishing in a tinny/bass boat, I really don't like fishing bare-footed with lures/hooks/etc laying around. Most sailors I know don't sail barefooted either, as the deck can be slippery in bare feet.

Now in warm weather just cruising or doing watersports, by all means shed the shoes. Every boat/situation will determine what type of attire is worn.

that's why we have boat shoes........ Kick off the street shoes and put on the smooth sole non marring slipons

Shoes and especially the coarse dirt tend to damage upholstery. People step in directly on the sun pad or the rear sport seat. If they stepped directly onto my auto upholstery I'd have to address that as well.

ever see what the floor mats get to looking like in a car? Have to be cleaned regularly and people are just sitting still... Some boats are harder to clean than others.... going downstairs in a cruiser makes for a dirt trap.

I have never had a boat where the back seat cushion wore out from shoes. Usually, the sun is the biggest problem and its not the material itself that wears out, its the seams.

I definitely don't worry about it. Clean your feet as well as you can before getting in and I'll deal with vacuuming the boat later. It's just a boat.

Ha Ha, I've never had a bad GM car. Neither of us would be decent actuaries.

AGREE 100%... that it's YOUR choice on how YOUR boat is used..... On the other hand if you are a guest in a boat belonging to someone else you go by their rules... Just as I wear shoes in my home but when I walk into my buddy's house and see a huge pile of shoes by the front door and his perfect white carpet I kick my shoes off.

A few years ago a friend and I made a miserable 2000 mile winter trip to new york and back picking up my new Monte Carlo (pictured below) and when we got back we left it in his back yard and both went to sleep... when I woke and went over to look at it his wife had put their 3 kids in it with VERY muddy shoes and they literally covered everything in mud.... seats v berth aft cabin all over the decks and even walked on the canvas and isinglass rolled up on the floor..... These kids are family to me and have grown up on boats... they all knew better but got excited and had a ball..... What was she thinking? her own words: "I dunno... guess I wasn't thinking"

Point... good rules make good kids.... Had she said "stay off Kevin's boat till he gets here and lets you on it" I would have made sure they took their shoes off and didn't walk on my canvas.... I have since had all of them out on the boat many times... without mud and without shoes ....Definitely NOT a kid hater here...

I disagree. It may be a boat for the "family", but 4 year old Johnny doesn't know a thing about boats, so his opinion is moot.

In 1987, I was the ripe age of 5 when we were just starting our boat shopping. I shocked the hell out of the salesman while having an intelligent conversation with my father over the choice of a MerCruiser 470 or a MerCruiser 5.0 in our next boat. When prompted, I later went on to explain to the salesman how a carburetor worked when he asked me if I knew what "this" was and pointing to it (sure made my dad proud).

Granted, I was an exceptionally technical 5 year old - but point being not all children are alike and should not be judged the same.

Unruly children are a pet peeve of mine - but you can usually tell a walking disaster of a child right away and should be able to handle it as such.

Part of being a good salesperson is handling all aspects of the customer, not just trying to make the sale.

well said... Agreed, my boat is a used boat that is a little beat up, if I had a new boat I might feel different. At the end of the day it's just stuff and kids are Kids.

Looks like I will have to pack the family up and head to the Cobalt dealer this weekend.

john john, it's really simple. My kids are the primary reason I bought the boat I did. I would not bother buying a boat they had not been on. The seller has his opinions and I have mine. He can make his decisions but that does not force me to. If I went in to a Cobalt dealer and they would not let my kids in the boat my decision on a Cobalt would be made and I'd find another to look at. You can be sure that if I was looking at a Mercedes I would have my kids sit in it to get there opinion as they'd be riding in it. I might even get my wife to try driving it.
When I did take my kids to look at Cobalts in 2006 they were 3, 7, and 10. The dealer I went to let them in several boats while we were looking in the showroom and lot. He then made sure everybody went on the demo. I liked the dealer and boat but thought the back seat was much windier than than other 21' boats I'd been in. My kids decided they enjoyed being in a few other boats more so I don't have a Cobalt but I had no problem with the dealer.

Many years ago I tried hard to wear out the backseat of my Chevy...
