That is the view from the PO house but our island about 1.5 miles at it's widest point. Can be overboard in minutes and don't have to steam long for deep water, plus 50 fathoms.

Bummer for me....I just calculated that there are 658 nautical miles from NJ to Bermuda...Oh well. On another note Great for you. So to clarify you are going to run the steering cables in a single conduit and all the electrical in another conduit. Do I have it right? Both under the floor.

I'm with you in agreement in regard to transom penetrations. Less is best in this case.

Yep, a 3" for motor cables and a smaller one for the electrical side. Also need to figure out best way to run fuel and fuel overflow tubes. Again if i have a problem i want as much ease of servicing as possible.

Yea...I've been debating back and forth on the steering cables under the floor. Hmmmmm....Wait till I get to that hurdle. I heard a couple guys say it's darn hard to get new cables back in if needed. Probably buy the tubing/conduit and make a mock up and try it before I drill out the bulkeads.
Tx!

For sure, plus I may try a heat gun and bent a length myself to avoid the 45's. weather forecast for Friday looks good so I want to sand transom and prime. We will see how that goes and Saturday cut the last bulkhead and also cut the limber holes and round over good for glass.

Re: Cobia 24' rebuild project.

Forget the 45 degree fittings. Everything has to be a "LONG SWEEP/90 degree" for the turns and pulls.
So much to do and so little time/Ching Ching! I'm so finished yesterday the last of my grinding. Had some weird spots of built up/spilled and cracking resin only directly in the V of the hull. I was wondering to myself why the heck that would be there? It was spidering cracking, holding water under it and also not allowing gravity for water to flow to the transom.
I even made a post about it a couple of days ago but no-one replied. So I just grinded the heck out it for my own peace of mind. Some spots were 1/2" to 3/4" high. At the end....it appears it was just a spill with no structural or mechanical benefit. But the concept of more grinding made me just pissed off. Done now and feel better.
Fittet some wood I precut and they are dandy! Alittle trimming but time to place.
First I have to recover the boat to protect from water. Alot going on this weekend!
Have a Great Holiday!

I saw your post on that. I had /have similar areas in my hull and have basically done the same thing, just grind it down. Some of it looked like resin putty without and filler/ strands for strength added. I used an old inch and a quarter wood chisel and removed the really thick stuff, crap would fly off and hit me saw sharp as glass and cut you just like splintered glass. Well to more progress.

Crack me up!! I made slices with the grinder then used a hammer and chisel too. You're right the chips shot like broken pc of glass. Time to order more glass and epoxy!
Found a cool hardtop for a 24' factory boat. I like the design alot.

Sweet, I really like that design. I don't want to steal your design but I can sure use most of the design aspects for what I would like to build. I really don't want a canvas top from the windshield section. I have this crappy aluminum and glass windshield which I will need to replace all the glass anyway so a new semi cabin with hardtop would work nicely. Found a company that makes the windows very similar to the ones on that boat in different glass/lexan material and tints. Headroom from current design is not and issue either. Man I love this forum. Well need to get cracking' had my boats fix some going get some work done.

Re: Cobia 24' rebuild project.

Thats not a canvas top. It's a hard top with two extension canvases on the side. The ladders let you go on top to do whatever. I really want the cab enclosed. I might start looking for some boat graveyards for windows or frames. Lexan is a great material and comes in sheetgoods. If you can find the windows, then slip in the lexan....just dinking. I like the canvas wings, use or not, but you can keep the option. Alot of the design make a 23-24 foot boat look reall bulky. This one really catches my eye. Plus I like the ladders on either side that are used for support and also let you climb up.......daydreaming...
The worst part is I just want to get her on the water...then the top so since I found some free canvas and I already have the aluminum frame I may just do that for now although I definitely prefer the other.

No,no I meant that I didn't want a canvas top on my current setup. I like the hard top design and the wife will definitely like that. Got some sanding done this afternoon. I had a little more work than I thought so primer tomorrow and back on the stringers. Wife imposed timeout on me to relax. I will say though I'm rating sanding and grinding as number 1 and 2 sucktastic jobs. Well this is a before and after on transom.image.jpgimage.jpg

Crackin me up! Sanding looks good. How did you like the filler and what primer ya gonna use. what color paint, do you know yet?
Well if the wife's involved better get a porta potty, or hook up one inside with a pump, shower, sink, a/c, tv,grill,, .
Trials and tribulations...Have to be good to the Misses or she will make that boat the worst thing ever.

I found the filler sanded fairly easy. Going to use Awlgrip 545 epoxy 2 part high build primer. The color choice right now is called cloud white by Awlgrip. The boat has a toilet already so wifey will be happy. Have a look at a company called Wynne Enterprises Inc. for the marine windows. They look to be a solid product.

I miss read your quote. The heat bend may be a good idea. Back to yoour hopper in the boat, is it portable or mechanical. If mechanical can you send me a pic? While I have the boat open I may add one. The window company looks good like you said. Have you gone to get a quote yet?

Re: Cobia 24' rebuild project.

Hey Gang, didn't do a whole lot this weekend, worn out. Did manage to get a coat of primer on the transom and took the stringers/bulkheads out to do some grinding. Instant reminder of how I hate grinding and the tyvek suit in hot temps is still no fun!! Hopefully will get the stringers and bulkheads in this weekend, just need some minor sanding of the parts and I'm going to cut the limber holes out to fit some pac end caps and glue them in before I install everything. Reminder to self, need to check and make sure I have enough resin and hardner for job.photo[127].jpgphoto[128].jpgphoto[129].jpg

I've been "Lurking" in the shadows listening to the great advise kcassells has been giving to you. Great Stuff!!! Just curious as to why you're using the 1808 with the epoxy? The mat that's sitched to the cloth really lends nothing to the laminate and actually just soaks up more resin. Some folks actually think it leads to a resin rich laminate and can actually weaken it. I'm not sure about that, but I do know it uses a lot more resin and IMHO it's not needed. Using 18oz biaxial cloth will yield as strong a laminate with less resin and again just my opinion is easy to install. The outside of the Transom Looks GREAT!!! Not sure if you've seen this but here it is for you to do with as you wish..."Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms". Let us know if we can help in any way.

Re: Cobia 24' rebuild project.

I hear you you are right in that it tends to use a lot more resin but I'm limited in what I can get locally trying to work using the local market. But so far I'm happy with the layups and thanks on the transom. I'm hopeful of good weather on saturday to get back at it. I will have a read of the link you have provided.

Hi Zulu,
Been running, working, lurking....Your boat is looking good. Here's a question, I shot you a quote for my 1708 biaxial.Does it cost a bundle to ship that over to you? Just wanting to know. I'm sure the 1808 is just fine. Just wanted to see the reasoning about the costs.
Other than that I hope you are well. Been diddlin on the teak wood that came with the boat. Shot some posts but they did no justice to the transformation.
I was considering fake wood and other materials man made for the related care not needed but the wood turned out too pretty.
In addition I went to Homedeblow and another lumber yard. I wanted to order "special" BC ply, exterior grade 4'x12' etc so I would not have to do 2x the butt joints needed to finish the lengths of my stringers. Wow.. long sentence.
No luck, like I had 2 heads from a snake in Cernoble {misspelled**.
So anyway back to multiple staggered butt joints on my little girlfriend. Surely am not paying custom custom anything other than my hard work.
Send some fresh pics. Always cool.!
