Re: Cruise Craft Restoration

hehehehe, that im sure is the dead set truth! I hired a storage garage away from the ocean to do the painting. It's fully inclosed and not much bigger than the size of the boat, I did this to try and eliminate some of these problems.

cheers

Wow Tengals, that primer coat has made a new boat out of it. Just a precursor to how it will look with the final coat and all the trimmings. Keep up the good word and holler loud when ya have a new windshield.

The Cowls are Finished, I hit them with another coat of clear and my decals finally came in. The skeg has primer and also undercoat on, the trailer has been cutback and the override coupling will be welded on tomorrow night. Also tomorrow, the fist coat of undercoat get rolled on the craft. here is the final product of cowls. Well, worth the effort. * Updated pictures available*
Re: Cruise Craft Restoration

*Updated Pictures Available*
1st coat of 'perfection' undercoat is on. This stuff is so much easier to work with than the 'interprotect' primer. It's looking real nice. I thinned the mix about 15% and tipped the whole boat as I went. I did notice 1 or 2 sags when I finished. These of course will be sanded out before the 2nd coat of undercoat goes on. Also, I welded the override coupling to the drawbar on the trailer. Lastly, the third coat of filler/undercoat was applied to the motor and after a sand and clean, the first topcoat was applied.
There is no stopping me now. I have a Australian boating mag interested in publishing my project, I'm rapt with that.

Thanks to all that continue to contribute to this project and thread.

Cheers

Tengals123,

Nice going! Got to ask about that trailer coupler. Its one intense looking coupler. How does it work? What is the function of the D handle and grease fitting looking part? And why is it so massive looking? Does it extend? What is the GVW of that trailer?

Who made that gas tank? I am surprised that the fill and hose next to it are both taken off the side of the tank, not the top. I just ask because that design does not meet US Coast Guard regs and I was wondering if it was made by a US company or a company that sells in the US. I know your not in the US and please don't be insulted by my bringing this up, I just thought that all tank manufacturers would pretty much be on the same page with specs and regs, regardless of country of origin so they could sell their tanks anywhere. The USCG says (and I paraphrase) the fill neck, vent and fuel lines must not let fuel out when the tank is filled completely (and no hoses connected). So you can see how a side fill would not meet that reg unless it had an elbow to bring it above the top of the tank (again, without hoses attached).

Im not surprised that a boating magazine is interested in your work. Especially seeing as you did a great job of documenting the progress. You might want to look into copyrite protection of your photos and text if it is going to be published. Just so someone else can't make money off your work and you get stiffed. You can always give written permission to the magazine. Do you have 'default' copyrite laws in AU?

Can't wait to see the finished paint. That boat is turning out to be just too much!

Re: Cruise Craft Restoration

Mark thanks for your post. The coupling is a standard size overide braked coupling. It works on a surge action. When you brake the trailer puts pressure on the coupling back, this hits a handbrake lever(not installed yet), which in turn pulls a cable, connected to a mechanical caliper on a disc rotor. The two nipples are for grease into the coupling shaft chamber. The plate makes the assy. look large. I needed the plate because the drawbar was not wide enough for the mounting bolts. I may grind off the sides. The nut on top is for leverage between the coupling at the towball. The D lever is standard which controls the locking mechansim.
The tank. Interesting point you make. It has been made by Australia's largest boat tank manufacturer. They supply tanks to all major boat manufacturers in Australia, including MERCURY Marine. I could only guess that the laws are different here in Aust. Because your point is right, it cannot be fully filled without the pipes. I believe they sell these tanks into New Zealand and the UK. Not sure about the US, but don't think so. The copyright thing is something I'll look into, thanks for the pointers.
