Mule Deer taste a lot like whitetail, but for the best of the best it is the elk meat. YUM! Had some fresh elk for supper tonight ... tenderloin fried in butter with peppers and onions! YUM!

Both are very tasty but I really think the best of the best has got to be Moose!

Took a small buck on opening day of bow season this year in northern Michigan. Bigger ones are right here in metro Detroit where it's tough to find land to hunt. Lots of back yard deer around here, and I think we lead the nation on car/deer acidents. With the rut right around the corner, these deer are crazy for love and smacking Fords GM's and Dodges all day long. I have meat for a few months, but need much more to make it through winter. Happy Organic everyone!!

Soggy-feet sorry to hear that. I'm sure you had many wonderfull game roasts over the years. I would not miss it either just to go hunting. I would love to attend myself, I'm sure it will be a grand event.

Well, just got home from helping my buddy with a baldy. He shot it with a crossbow. He's an old fart(65), here in WI that's old enough to legally use one. That, or if you have a disability. So my role was to hold the flashlight and a leg while he did the dirty work. Helps to have 2 guys throw it in the back of the truck too........ Hi Pauly..........

The same buddy that shot a baldy wounded a 6 point last nite. Tracked for 2 hours after dark and called it quits. Going back out this a.m. once the frost melts. One minute you could walk standing up because it was bleeding good and the next we're hunched over looking for a spec of red.

Hopefully, it layed down and never got up. Was in the teens last nite so no worries. Wish us luck..........

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Looking forward to our opening day on the 15th:)

My girlfriend made a feeble attempt to kill one with our Ford Flex two weeks ago, no meat and an insurance deductible is not a good outcome. The antlers dented the heck out of the hood and he ran off.

We've been spotting 8pt bucks on trailcams at both locations we hunt, so now is the tough decision of where to sit opening morning.:)

Good luck WIMUSKY, hopefully you've got a buddy with a bloodhound.

Huron, that decision is easy ... girlfriend goes to one trail cam and you go to the other! Get them both!

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

The old Stillhunter got one wednesday, just a 2yr. old slickhead, but a trophy to me. I shot her w a muzzleloader while sitting on a folding stool, No scent,or bait, plenty of White Oak acorns though still falling here. She snuck up over a rise as I was studying some quiet noise in the leaves In a thicket maybe 40 yrds from me trying to tell if it was a deer or squirrel. When I heard HER and turned to look, she was 16 yrds from me! walking slowly. A neck shot dropped her w an hour of daylight, so I reloaded and sat till dark, waiting for another one! I prefer to hunt on the ground and feel more satisfaction taking them this way, more so when they come in close. Most of the Hunters I know hunt from portable or permanent stands to keep their scent away from the deers nose. I like to use the wind and terrain as well as sign and trails to set up in places I think can be succesfull. I seem to be getting better at it each year. I do occasionally hunt from stands esp. when bowhunting.
I agree, I do my share of tree stands, but alot of hunting from the ground as well, especially when its really cold. Cant beat the adrenalin rush of being eye to eye. And it gives ya extra bragging rights if ya bag one..IMO.

how about MOOSE HUNTERS!!!
LMAO

What region of Colorado is that? It is so beautifull and looks like a challenging area to hunt with the brush/fields, combined w the long range views. PaulT, Huge swamp buck,"10 ft'":eek::eek::eek:!!!, I'm slowly working towards that goal, closer all the time............... Then I could use a spear!!!
I was sitting, against a tree in the thickets once. Da buck came up from behind the tree. I could just see the tip of an antler and the steam from his breath over my shoulder out of the corner of my eye. Could smell the musk. 5 Ft at the most. If he had taken 1 more step I coulda punched him in the knee. He turned around and blew outta there. Damn near gave me a heart attack

Woo Hoo! We found it! We were only 1/2 hour into the track again and it was laying dead. Been dead for awhile. I guess it was luke warm when gutted. Still no worries. Plenty cold last nite. Brought it straight to a processor. Going to be in the mid 50's today.

Thanks for the support Huron(just us 2 legged hounds) and Pauly!

As my bud dropped me off at home, had a fork or 6pt run thru my backyard. His ears were perked. Was looking/chasing something. Suspect he got wind of a doe. The rut is on......

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

PaulT, that story about the close incounter was great! I would have died of a heart attack or lost control of bodily functions!! I'm always excited when I smell a rutting buck while hunting' the stronger the better. More close encounters...... I was maybe 150 yrds. from my truck minutes in the woods one day when I heard an explosion of running deer and breaking sticks just ahead in the somewhat thick fall woods. I leaned against a 10" tree and could see glimpses deer running around eveywhere. Suddenly 2 came running right at me, a LARGE doe and her yearling. They stopped less than 10 feet from me as I looked out the corner of my eye, and then continued looking towards the ruckus still going on where they came from a minute, and the fawn stepped up and sniffed my leg. I looked back as the ruckus got closer... then back away from me. Then I heard something else. The big doe, facing away from me, lifted her tail and relieved herself in a large stream that splashed on my leg and boots!!!!!. they eventually walked off and the ruckus moved away too and I kept hunting w my new fresh cover/attractant scent. I actually had a deer **** on me!!. but I enjoyed it , Is that wrong?...... another time when I was 16 I found several huge fresh scrapes and rubs in some planted pines w a wore out trail through the pinestraw. Being young and strong, I climbed a good sized tree and waited till dark. I dropped my coat and lowered my gun on a string and climbed down in the dark. As soon as I put on my coat and picked up my 30/30 I heard heavy steps comming towards me up the path. I found my flashlight as the steps stopped at 5 or 6 yrds. I shined my light into a fat cedar right between me and the buck who proceeded to snort and paw the ground like a mad bull:eek::eek::eek: I thought the light would spook him, but he stood his ground and snorted louder:eek: His eyeshine was w i d e, and seemed about eye level w me:eek: after minutes of this he turned his head, and silence. I stood there listening for a while, then made my way to the truck having to walk towards where he came from. I had the gun at my hip expecting him to be behind every tree, waiting to attack me as I shined the light in the black woods. I believe this buck heard me climbing down and thought I was an intruder rubbing trees in HIS spot, and he was gonna kick his or my donkey!!!!! I'll never forget the long, loud, angry grunts he made that night.

So, y'all packed Pauly? Hope you shoot the big one this year. You can dream about him the night before opener! Not sure what the weather will be like in your area this weekend. Duluth is calling for high winds all weekend and rain Sat nite/Sun. That's pretty much for N Mn and NW WI.

The rut in N Mn has been going on for at least 1.5 - 2 weeks. My brother was sitting in the hut during bow season watching the same field at dads where "my gun" (lol, now I can laugh about it) missed that 8 last year. In one evening he saw a group of bucks walk out. 3 - 8s a couple 10s and a couple spikes along with a bunch of does. 15 were out there that nite. That was before the rut and the bachelors split up. Sounds like one of the 10s and one of the 8s were dandies. The closest they got to him were 60yds. So there are some big deer running around up there.

Howeverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I'm not going up this year. This will be the 1st time in 35 years I haven't hunted up north. Not going to pay for the non resident license(had to do that for the last 12years) and the gas for my truck back and forth. Even tho it's only a few hundred $s. I've been going thru a bunch of money this fall. Started to draw the line on a few thing. Hunting, unfortunately was one of them. Still plan on hunting in WI. The talk on the news about the opener this weekend is killing me... O'well, priorities. I wonder who will end up watching "my" field? lol

Thanks 'speck! I really hate to hear about or see deer not being found when wounded. We literally thanked God when we came upon the buck......

Four point mule out of Utah. Closed roads required a 2 1/2 hr. drag to camp. Man I'm getting old.

Man, thats alot of work dragging a deer. Is doesnt matter how old ya are! I hunt an area that has steep banks , coulies, surronded by fields. A few years ago I bought an ATV to get em out of the valleys, Money well spent.

Re: DEER HUNTERS! Lets see the pics, hear the stories!

Anymore stories? Anything from Mn? My brother supposedly shot an 8pt in back of dads place. No pix yet. No pix, didn't happen! Will post one if I get one. He said he was getting ready to leave his stand at 10:30 and was relieving himself(I know, TMI:facepalm:) at the moment when it came out of the brush 10yds away. Grabbed his gun and shot it. That's one dumb buck thanks to the rut...

Wonder if Pauly is still out there walking around in circles? :p:D
