Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

To expand the explanation of "Colonial" attitudes towards the "Mother Country", when I was a Kiwi (New Zealander) I recall us being a tolerant pro Mother Contry (England)people. When I moved over the 'ditch' and became an "Okker" (Australian) I found the people not afraid to speak their minds (kiwis call it outspoken).
Now those attitudes are displayed in sport.
When the Kiwis get beaten, "they at least came 2nd, and it really was a good game, and the opposition did play well"
When the Aussies get beaten, "their team are a bunch of loosers, their coach was usless, half the team get fired, and the opposition either cheated or were just lucky. And next time we play them, we will murder the bxggars".
Personally I think it comes from where the 2 peoples origonated. Yes, both from the mother country, BUT,the Aussies were convicts the mother country wanted rid of, and the Kiwis were land owners who bought tradespeople with them to get settlements established. Mainly thru the Church of England (Edward Gibbon Wakefield).
Personally I feel the Aussies are far more aggressive on the sports field, and when it comes to playing England, at anything, its "murder them or die trying".
That is why England has difficulty beating Aussies at anything. Not that the English arn't good enough, the Aussies hate loosing to them. We don't care what the score is, so long as we don't loose to them.
Just my take on things.
Cheers
Phillip

Better odds than winning the CA lottery and just about as likely. ;)

This thread has gone a bit quiet........can't let it slip off the radar.
A very interesting days play, but........it is like a war: dosn't matter how many battles you win or loose, it is who wins the war that is important, and there is still a long way to go and a lot of battles to be fought in this game.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

Day 2

A good bit of batting from Englands lower order kept the first innings score respectable, one of the best catches I have seen to dismiss Pieterson by Martyn.

The early wickets of Langer & Hayden kept the game very interesting, Ponting got himself IN and looked like he was going to go on to a big score, but when he fell at 100 things were still very even. Martyn & Clark then put on a very good partneship (if only pieterson had held that catch before tea) the match had now swung in favour of the Aussies, but 4 wickets in the final hour of play has pulled that advantage back a little, England will be looking for a quick end to the Aussie innings tomorrow and our batsmen will have to get thier heads down, 1 1/2 days to chase arround 330???.

One thing for certain if the rain stays off this match will have a result.

Moments of day 2

Pietersons straight 6 off McGrath. (not to many times you will see Glen put back over his head for 6)
Pietersons 6 off Warne (huge)
Martyn's catch to take Pieterson (one of the best I have seen)
Pietersons fielding to run out Langer.
Bad shots by Hyden & Ponting for thier wickets.
Pietersons dropped catch in the last over before tea (very expensive)
The batting of Martyn & Clark (Clark should have got 100)

I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

yea! KP dropped him when he was on 22, Martyn went on to score 65 :(

Kudos to Clarke though, that was a great days knock for him and the Aussies, with 15 boundries off of 106 Bollocks! er..oops! balls on a mediocre and not so great batting pitch, Vaughn looked really desperate for a breakthrough which he got towards the days end with the wickets of Clarke, Martyn and Gilchrist, that sure brighten things up a bit for England.

I don't want to rain on your parade RJPS, but England has got one hell of a high mountain to climb, meself i just can't see them scoring that many runs to win

I would have to agree with you, it's a big ask, but this is the Ashes and I know that the England lads will not go down without a good fight

Oh its going to be a good fight alright, i'm only too happy to see the Aussies get their koalas bruised a bit, they've gotten too cocky over the last few years imho.

Just remember that we had our colours lower by Bangladesh a few weeks ago.

This has been a game where the balance has moved a lot, but that the beauty of cricket. I think it'll be close, whichever way it goes. Of course I am hoping for an Australian victory. :D

Chris...............

Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

Finally the weekend is here and I can stay up and watch a full days play. Unfortunatley the game might be over before stumps tonight. Although I suspect the conditions ( for batting) will improve, it is far to early to predict the result.

I'm with Chris on the result :D

GR

Aussie's leading by just over 400 runs. Even our tailenders are knocking the ball all over the park :) .

Hey RP, sack your keeper and you could be in with half a chance, he's not ready for this level of cricket

It isn't just the keeper, but you do expect someone with a dirty great pair of gloves on to keep hold of the ball.

If anyone knows any good rain dances please start now, I think that 2 days of rain is all that can save us now. :( :( :(

To give our friends across the (really big) lake an idea of where the game's at. It's like the bottom of the last innings of a baseball game and the batting side, in the case England, is 2 down and needing another 10 home runs to win, with all the best batters gone. :D :D :D

Records count for nothing. When was the last time someone was chasing 420 with only 2 1/2 days left to bat.

The conditions have improved, unlike the conditions to be expected on a day 5 wicket.

I still like the odds, but I will wait another day before I start getting excited.

RP this just might be your chance to go No. 1 in the last dig run chase.

GR

Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

GOD is an England fan!!

Rain at Lords which is set for the day. :D

Moments of day 3

The Aussie tail end adding 80 runs more than expected
2 dropped catches by Jones (school boy standard)
Good opening partnership between Trescothick & Strauss
Warne bowling (fantastic)
Pieterson batting (the only England batsman to read Warne)

If Pieterson gets his head down he could stay in the middle for a long time, the problem is that he does not have anyone to stay there with him.

Even if the weather can save England in this test the Aussies will take a moral victory which they well deserve, the England selectors will have to change things for Edgbaston.

IMO Pieterson should bat 4 G Jones should go home & S Jones should take the new ball with Harmison. Also Pieterson should field at deep extra cover.

"Catches Win Matches" at this level of cricket a team connot afford to drop 6 in one match.

Re: Dunaruna, Kiwi Phil & Get Reel

A well deserved Aussie win.

Very fitting that the two men involved in taking the final wicket were McGrath & Warne, as this may well be the last time they play test cricket at Lords.

Once again G Jones showed he is not a test player & IMO should not be selected for the next match.

Congratulations to the Aussie team.

I said at the start of the match that I hoped to see the best cricket in the world, well we got that from all the bowlers involved, glimmers of it from certain batsman & the Aussies gave England a lesson in world class fielding.

I hope the Edgbaston test is as entertaining as this one has been, but with an England win.

I will be at the ground for the first 4 days at Edgbaston (in the Raglan stand) so I will be posting those photo's of the Barmy Army in full song.
