The hot dog thread reminded me of this. Our local 'boat journal' has the odd recipe in there. Cooking prep and times similar to a crock pot on high. We tried a veggie/spice/rice in tinfoil and it was yummy (and fun). Anyone else tried this?

Used to do baked potatoes on the car engine when back in England. If you got home a little quicker than usual then we finished them off in the oven !!!

A few of my friends used to drive cement mixers for Rinker.. They'd cook stuff on the turbos occasionally... Unfortunately, I never got to sample it..

Re: Engine cooking

At first I thought you cooked your engine in that beautiful boat. Glad that wasn't the case!

I haven't tried cooking on the engine, but I have put limberger cheese on exhaust manifolds before,,,,,,,,,,,oh what a disgusting smell. Just about as bad as nightcrawlers left in a hot trunk!

I will keep that idea in mind when we plan a big cruise sometime.

Yup.. Back in the day, I used to drive a ford cabover with no A/C.
Occasionally, I would place a can of Bush brothers best baked beans with back bacon and brown sugar, baby -- or beansy-weensies on the manifold... You need to "vent" the can, or be ready to clean beany-weenies of the engine whilst hungry.

Re: Engine cooking

I'm a 'comb-over' redneck?
Righty-o... you'd likely change your mind if we met :)

It was more like this... my stove/oven was a propane unit so it was my preference to have the engine off while I used it. The boat had a sniffer but still... I had kids on board that day so I thought I'd try it as a slightly safer alternative.
To prepare the side dishes I put the foil wrapped mix with a bit of water and cooked them on the engine during the 2 hour (and a bit) trip. When I got there I flashed up the bbq and cooked my steaks, unwrapped the side dishes and viola! It was really good, fun and I saved some propane to boot!

... and it was cubed potatoes, not rice with the veggies.

I sold that boat shortly afterwards and never had the chance to try it again but the hot dog thread reminded me of it.

btw... I'd definitely shave or get a hair tattoo before I'd do a comb-over!
hehe ;)

Re: Engine cooking

I think you started something Magster. Now when I see a boat in the water with smoke coming from the engine,,,,,,,,,,,,Are they broke down? or are they just cooking up a meal?

Re: Engine cooking

I'd try it, but when I hit the huge wakes from all the under-powered 30 ft Sea Rays that can't get up on plane coming out of Gunpowder Cove, all the food would end up in the bilge! :p
