Yep but watch for any oil passageways...

for the inch pounds I just convert to foot pound

That will work on all but some of the low setting fasteners. Make sure you put the flatwashers on coils as you can crack the powdered core of coil if you don't use them and make sure you install the grounding washers(star)..

OKAY .......I purchased a new starboard-side head, as you can see from the pictures a ring snapped and smashed the head and piston .
Pistons changed re-bore done, new starboard-side head purchased and ready to fit (or so I thought) ......The head I purchased (although fits) doesn't have the stanchions for the coils so it's going back to the supplier.
Now the question I would like to ask is .................
Looking at the picture do you think I can get away with cleaning the original head up? I can't see any ring pieces in there but as you can see it's a bit of a mess!

Ben,

Nice rebuild. Find the correct head and replace it. Keep searching. Not worth the $$$ spent to blow it up for lack of a $100 head (the ring piece will act as a glow plug and fire BTDC). I can pretty well asure you, you have some pieces of steel from the rings embedded in that head. Or it wouldn't have done all that damage. Bob

great read guys... not to jump your thread. maybe I should start a new one> I got the bad news today my 86 115hp evinrude has lost compression in 2 of the four cylinders. I thought it was an idle cable adjust or fouled plugs, she started running rough for the first time in 4 years of perfection and monthly fishing trips. I live in Puerto Rico. the mechanic here wants $1500 for the rebuild. I am not that mechanically inclined, fixed weedeaters etc, easy stuff, not pistons. Should I attempt to do this myself? 80% of boats here have the 85hp yamaha, they live by it, it is underhorse for my 18ft angler plus I do not want to spend thousands on a new motor... Any advice? sorry for the high jack of your thread but Im freaking and need my boat back and you guys sound like you totally know... thanks

Aguazul Yamaha seem to be the preferred engine out here too?
someone told me not so long ago "ITS ONLY NUTS AND BOLTS", in a way he's right. Take the heads off and have a look, Have a go its good fun! and you will learn loads of things.................

Job Done...............Video is here Timing hasn't been completed yet as I don't have a timing light and I recon it will be beneficial if I get it done by the experts.
Its been run twice for 5 mins .starts first time every time......................................BTW I used the original head (cleaned up of course) simply because I couldn't get one under U$D 230.00++).

I would certainly install a temperature SENDOR, ( not sensor) in each each now along with a gauge for each....with that bad head you reinstalled, you could have issues. Id also install a water pressure gauge. you dont want to do this all again.

Bob please educate me ...........what is the difference and where will I get one? I do agree with you about the head and the need to keep an eye on things.
To be honest I would do it all again , now I have a better idea of what to do

I used the original head (cleaned up of course)

It will be fine as the ding/dent will fill in over time with carbon........

sensors are part of the warning syatem... but senders work on their own with a guage you have to buy. senders tell you exactly what the head temperature is....all the time... most motors have a spot like a 1/8th pipe thread hole to attach the senders too...I am most familiar with my style motor though, which is a little different than yours. they sell universale temp senders that attach under a head bolt..

recently I has some water pump issues and I watched one head soar past 180 degree up to 200, well i shut the motor off...I made a positive move to prevent the motor from over heating ... as well there are times when giving my motor gas cooled it faster, because of the increased water pressure it got at higher rpms...as well sometimes you need to throttle down to let the motor cool for various reasons..maybe a thermostat didnt open...

I dont want to wait for an alarm..... I dont let my motor go over 200 ever./

sometimes motors over heat EVEN with great water pump pressure.... you dont need to know the exact reason, all you need to know is it is about to get too hot and you have the option of just turning the motor off, and saving it..

Ill never have a consoled boat with out temp gauges in each head ever again.

Just had the boring and honing done on all 4 to 0.03 U$D120 for the lot.............Now onto the rebuild.

Cool. $30 per hole is reasonable. So, for about $150, you can have a new piston and ring set and boring for each hole. $600 is not too bad for that.

Hope this isn't a ridiculous question. Could you wire a sending unit on each cylinder bank with just one gauge? ie the gauge displaying the higher/highest temp?
