Re: Favorite boating moment

I think so far mine is looking back as the driver and seeing the entire bottom of our bright yellow Rave flat towable up in the air totally perpendicular for that moment, then my then 12 year old daughter flat on her stomach coming back down. The look of terror on her face right after she came down, then the change to a face splitting grin and then the laughing was p-r-i-c-e-l-e-s-s. My brother was on his jetski and saw the whole thing from the back, good times. We still say she has "the record" for most gnarly tube ride.

I know that feeling, my oldest daughter does that too (yes, she stayed on)

If you haven't yet done so, get a second identical tube and rope and tow two at once. It far more than doubles the fun.

Re: Favorite boating moment

I don't know there are so many, some with friends or the kids or the wife, great stories here remind me of so many more I just have a hard time nailing down a favorite, I can however tell you my families favorite.

So me and a buddie bought this 12' flat towable that the rope attached to the center of, so as you tow this beast it starts to spin like a carousel, it was huge fun! It had a center backrest section so that three people could sit back to back while it spun around! Well the kids were playing king of the mountain at a raft up and punctured the center section but not to be deterred US MEN decided that this new toy had many more opportunities then the previous! And after a few to many cold beverages it was decided that I being in the best shape and of questionable mental stability should therefore be the test pilot...

So My buddie (some buddie) takes the wheel of my boat with this 12 foot beast behind it and me splayed out flat on my face hands and feet in holds and he punches it, somewhere around 35 MPH my buddie figures out that this towable will now stand up on end, add a little bit of turn and you have a Human pinwheel.

Reports are that I was airborne for 40 feet, absolutely no form at all just like I was still on the tube all splayed out spinning, thankfully no pictures, I needed a lot of Tequila that night...

Rented a lakeside cabin at Lake Charlevoix in the mid 90s, with two other couples. Rolled in a little after noon, and unloaded/unpacked and relaxed for an hour or two. Two of us went down to the south end of the lake to launch the boat, then my buddy drove back to the cabin while I struck out to find the dock at the cabin. Didn't have a gps, or even a map. There was about 1 1/2 hours of light left, and the lake isn't all that large, so I knew I'd find it -- no worries there. Set out from the ramp at "golden hour", where the light has a spectacular quality to it. The temp was perfect, there was no wind at all, the lake was absolutely glass-smooth, and the boat was running smooth and quiet. Had a cup of great coffee on the dash -- no cupholder required. The ride was so smooth, so quiet, that it seemed like I wasn't moving at all. The light, the occasional low-flying pair of birds, and the complete absence of anyone else on the lake made for a ride I can clearly remember to this day. All too soon, our dock appeared to port. Fortunately, there was still enough light for a nice loop across the lake as part of the approach pattern. It was a great beginning to a great week of boating and relaxation.

Re: Favorite boating moment

Great stories y'all. I honestly have no favorite moment. There are just too many of them ...

My Great Grandfather taught me to fish in his little rowboat with a '56 Evinrude 3hp. My Dad, Brother, Uncle(s), Cousins fished all over our lake in our 14' rowboat with '58 Johnson 7 1/2 hp. My Brother and I learned to ski behind our '58 Lake-n-Sea and eventually got into a '72 Royal American for knee board and slalom. My Grandfather taught me to sail in our Capri 15'. Some family friends used to take us sailing on Lake St. Clair in their O'day 22. Dunno' how many boats Dad and I towed in off the lake in our Royal American over the years.

Now ... my kids are learning about enjoying boats on our '72 Silverline, visiting the family cottage and playing with Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and Cousins on the pontoon, ski boat, rowboats, kayak, paddle board ... etc, etc.

How do you pick a favorite outta' all that? It's my whole flippin' life!

Wow it's nutts how quickly we accumulate so many great moments that picking just one is hard. Nevertheless, there are some great stories here. I am hoping to be able to add more great moments thought the weekend.

final ford 027.jpgMy wife wondered if I would ever finish my retirement project of bringing back my old 60 crestliner. I did and she was the first person to ride with me.We had a nice little 2 hour ride and the 50 year old engine purred and I could tell she was impressed.

Sounds like a great time on the water. I have had similar experiences and asked myself "is this a one time experience?" sure enough and luckily enough boating gives you a great feeling time after time!

Re: Favorite boating moment

The reason I had to have a boat: Fishing in a friends 16 foot fishing boat when we rounded the corner of an island and there were 3 or 4 girls laying in the sun making sure there were not tan lines. They knew we were there but did not move a bit so I guess they were used to what ever attention sunbathing like that would bring. Had a boat in a few months and never witnessed something like that since.

Best fishing moment: was a dead calm night fishing with life long friend for bullhead. Laid back in the boat just talking having a few beers and looking at the stars. So calm the boat did not move and as I recall we did not even catch a single catfish. It was so relaxing that when we thought to check on the time it was like 2 or 3 am and it was a weeknight so I am sure the next day was not too much fun.

Fun Boating times: When my kids were younger we would anchor in the middle of the lake because there was lots of traffic and just hand in the water from our life jackets. When everyone went in to eat around 4 or 5 we would pull out the water skis and have the lake almost to ourselves.

Best ski time was after a thunderstorm where the launch was so crowded that we could not pull our boat out and the storm suddenly ended and the sun came back out. The water was flat a s glass. Went back out and skied in conditions that are so very rare. Of course I ended up hurting my self because you could make cuts that were insane and well I got a bit more insane than my ability.

I went to Robert E. Peary High School. He's the guy who reportedly was the first to reach the north pole. The school had his anchor on the front lawn, and his ship mast as our flag pole. Our mascot is the Husky Dog. All that and more.

In our school song was the line, "to find a way or make one, our motto ever will be..."
What year did you graduate? My Dad and his cronies taught there from 1967 until it closed in 1984

Bottle of wine, a little Frank Sinatra and other soft love songs. My beautiful wife and a beautiful sunset over the Tennessee River. Some days I can't help but looking at the cars going over the bridge and they race to whatever appointment or commitment they are late for and think there is no way any of those people are as happy as me. I know the rest of you know the feeling. Boating is like nothing else.

Another great moment for me:
this morning i had a meeting with a client that has his office at the local marina/boardwalk by my house.
Showered, walked down to the boat, head down to his office (20 minute ride), docked and head up to the meeting. was a great start to the day. That's what i call "Mixing business with pleasure" ;)
