So... whats the wood species. Looks like balsa with all that kerfing.? Plus looks good. If it were a cake I'd order a slice.

Sure it would be a heavier wood though to keep them from popping up. Using any type of locking mechs.?

It's divinycell, about a half inch thick. Tools like wood but much lighter. I'll add two compression latches per hatch!

Those, and then I'll glue some sort of neoprene gasket on the lid underside where the lip meets lid, should be fairly watertight. Some of the bigger ones could use four latches, but these things are hugely expensive...

Red, not only very nice work as usual, but seems you do the job with a nice clean surroundings a swell. I have to say those look great. I am going to try and duplicate your effort. But I know they will not match your work. Is that divinycell there to give it some rigidity to stop warpage? have to admit, I have never heard of that stuff before your posts. But then this is my first boating project as well. :thumb:

It's there for strength mainly, the hatch ends up more rigid and stiff with less cloth. A single skin hatch would be heavy and still flex a bit.

It's worth trimming the glass pieces quite short while prefitting everything. Saves you a lot of headaches later on. Now we overlapped about an inch and glassed all the overlapping fabric to each other. Just to make sure we'll be left with no voids in the bends.

Warping can be a problem, I've got some in the last batch. But adding just one or two layers of glass at a time should keep it to a minimum. And the screws drilled in the edge melamine help of course.

You'll do great, trust me. If I and we can do it then you sure can as well. Nothing weird about it, do the wax radius with warm plasticine and a warmed up edge fillet tool (steel ball on a stick actually) and let the first layer of gelcoat set overnight and you should be good!

Not too excited about the mohair roller finish. Should have sticked to foam rollers and thin coats in rapid succession. But well, maybe the underside of four hatches doesn't matter that much.

Hey Red - your work looks just a good as what boat manufacturers do in the hidden areas. Like the insides of hatches. :joyous:

Good point :) And I would have used a bunch of foam rollers to get that done nicely, so maybe just as well!

Red, thanks for posting your steps and incremental progress. I am learning from your abilities. Just wish I had the same capabilities. But I guess I'll never know unless I try. I know I am always impressed see your projects. :thumb:

No alligatoring, but a multitude of other problems(dropping the biggest one on concrete among others). Taking a day off to cool my nerves, eat well and get back to this after the holidays.

After all the work you have done you should take 2 weeks off and relax.

You're doing great!!!!! It's a shame one got damaged. Are you going to repair it or build a whole new one?
