Re: First Boat Project

We had a field trip to the Engineering department at Stanford today so we weren't able to get anything done. I was able to stop by Harbor Freight to pick up some things. I got shop vac bags, polishing kit (thanks for the tip Wood), and a support backing plate for the angle grinder.

My dad got our shop vac from his work. Its a Dayton which isn't retail so I had a hard time finding filters or bags for it. I saw that HF sold these filter bags for their vacs and figured it might work on mine since it is just elastic. Turns out it did, the double elastic was surprisingly tight. I need it to because when I was using it to clean up after I dry walled a room the sheet rock dust was terrible, and I figure fiberglass dust would be even worse.

Also has anyone else noticed the button by your screen name on iboats forum that takes you to all of the threads you have activity is gone? Is there another way to get to this page? It used to be in the area in the pic below. I think is used to say Replied Threads or something.

I always just click the "User CP" and it show all my recently replied to threads. There is then a "View all subscribed threads" link in there that should do the same thing for you.

Re: First Boat Project

I hope they bring the button back.

I have a safety question: for working with resin and glassing do I need a cartridge respirator/mask or will the good 3M masks like in the attached pic work?

Wow, it's like a took a trip in time, my Grandfather had the exact same engine on an old v-hull. I was pulled as a kid a many times behind that engine.

That's a great one to restore, looking forward to final pictures.

I've done plenty of restores as have many on here, lots of good advice here.

Re: First Boat Project

Thanks will give that a shot......

As for drill size, around 3/32" would be ideal, drill only as deep as you need to get the sample, not right through.

Drill from the inside so as not to cut through the gel coat, you probably already knew that, but I've seen some people do it.

We almost have the cap off, and we are preatty sure the transom is bad.

Re: First Boat Project

You absolutely must BUY one of these, no IF's, AND's or BUT's!!!!
About $35 bucks at Lowe's

2.) Put the buffer wheel in the drill, rev it up and rub the WHITE rouge on the PAD then start buffing the aluminum. RELOAD the Wheel with Rouge about every foot or so. Use a dry rag to wipe down the aluminum then use the Other wheel and Load it up with the RED rouge and repeat the buffing. It should shine like chrome when you're done.

I'm just sayin...

Re: First Boat Project

You melt the compound onto the spinning wheel, it's supposed to be that way.

Trust us about the cartridge filters, they work and you'll regret the headache if you don't. Also, those cartidges last 30 days if left out in the open. Get a gallon resealable plastic bag and put it in it after you are done and it will last longer, plus keep it clean by using alcohol and a swab ( or wet wipes ) and clean it before you put it in the bag, that way you don't get yourself sick ( potentially ) later when you use it.

Re: First Boat Project

So weather and the holidays have been preventing work on the boat. I was able to get under the pitched up tarp while it was lightly raining to get up the remaining deck. I as able to get the remaining section out in two pieces (they were divided by the original seam) so know I have the original to use as a template.

Re: First Boat Project

I got a lot done today. I used the poles from an old tent to make a grinding tent. It was actually sort of roomy. Since the cap isn't off yet i was only able to grind the sides of the hull where the core will be attached. I didn't quite get it all done but a good chunk of it any way.

Re: First Boat Project

We got most of the grinding done yesterday. Also got the side stringers out in one piece to use as a template so that was good. Today we are going to clean up more and try to get the cap off. We had to break the heads off a few of the screws in the back to get the rub rail off but now they are holding the cap on.

And this is after we cleaned up the big stuff...

Re: First Boat Project

Finally got the cap off!!! A few broken screws in the back were keeping it on along with adhesive behind the splash well (see pic). We had to use an angle grinder to cut off the screws under the cap and basically we had to lift on the splash well until the old adhesive gave way.

Check out a vid of us taking the cap off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl87Qib09Mw

Also got the last bit of deck out. The transom is rotted but not very badly at all, which sucks because it is bad enough to need to be replaced but not so bad that its going to be easy. It wont pry off so we are thinking or setting a circular saw and cutting down to make strips to take out, if that makes sense.

This is the back of the splash well where that adhesive was(the blue stuff)

Re: First Boat Project

Looks like you are almost done with the hard part, it gets a lot better once you have the wood out and the grinding done!

Re: First Boat Project

So i have been reading up on using PL Premium to bond the ply together for the transom then to bond the transom to the skin. Can I use the regular PL Premium or do I have to spend the extra on the Advanced stuff.

Also how much will I need?
