Flag Pole on boat - stars and stripes

I've always liked seeing the flag flying on the stern of boats. I was considering putting a flag pole mount or using my light pole for it. I am concerned about getting the flag wet or damaged. I have a 21' sea ray open bow.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Has anyone done this?

It's on a boat so it's bound to get wet. But there is nothing wrong with that as long as you buy an all-weather flag!

Re: Flag Pole on boat - stars and stripes

I display the Flag on holidays on my boat. My buddy displays his every time the boat is on the water.

Treat it with the respect it deserves and properly remove, fold, and stow when not in use and I for one have no problem weith it. (Just don't drop it in the water) In fact, I encourage it.

Flags properly displayed anywhere will become wind torn and wet. When it gets to a the condition/shape that it is no longer in good condition, take it to the American Legion or VFW for a respectfull farewell and buy a new one.

Maybe I missed the point/idea, but why can't you go to the Bass Pro store, Cabela's, probably here at iboats, or your boat shop and buy one of the flag poles, that fit into the fore, or aft light plugs. We have a 20' deck boat, and we put a flag pole in it. That is how they are designed. I'd guess that ours is 12" X 16". The pole telescopes out some, to fit flags.

SORRY, I mis-read. You want a full size flag !!

Yes, I'd like bigger than that. I am thinking about twice the size of yours.

The flag (properly referred to as the national ensign, BTW) is mounted at the stern if possible, never at the bow.

I would like to get a pole that is about 48" long. I think any longer than that will present problems stowing the pole. What size flag would be a good fit for that pole?

I have never owned a boat that did NOT have a flag. All of the comments above are good.

Buy the 48" pole with a chrome angled socket to fit the base. I personally prefer mahohany, but if you're not picky a teak pole would be OK too. A 24x36 flag will fit it nicely.

Fly it proudly!

That seems about right. a 24x36 flag has a hypotenuse of 43", so it won't touch the boat. I'll mount it up on the top of the transom anyway, which is still about 24" off the water. That is a pretty good sized flag.

Re: Flag Pole on boat - stars and stripes

I bought my waketower used so it had extra holes in it so I used a hole per flag and purchased car window flags and cut off the put that attaches to the windows and drilled a hole in the mast. I then used 1/4-20 bolt and washer and then lock nut and the flags stay upright. I had planned to use a SS mounting but I was unwilling to put $100+ in poles and mounts. When my bimini top is opened you cannot see how the flags are attached. I work for a metal shop and may build a custom flag holder one day.

I like it. Looks great. Just don't know if I want to drill a hole in my new tower to get it done.

I thought about doing it with a bimini SS mount bracket and screw it in, but since the holes were their I used them at least it covered the holes up. :D

My boat has a flag on a shorter flag pole, but no mounting bracket. It appears there was a bracket on the stern rail corner. I will be finding one and mounting it shortly.

A flag this size is going to create a great deal of stress on whatever it is mounted to. Make sure to take that into account when planning your installation.

Flag poles and sockets:

Absolutely. Thru bolt it and put a plywood backer plate on the inside.

I lost a flag once, so now I drill a hole thru the mount and pole and use a QD pin with ring to secure the pole to the mount.

Re: Flag Pole on boat - stars and stripes

i think i read that the flag (national ensign) should be 1" in length for every 1' of boat length
my 17'5" boat carries an 18" ensign. on my stern lite:)
on a side note : i alway put it up before launch , and say a prayer for those that make it possible for me to play safe and free!!
