Re: Forum hostility

Re: Forum hostility

Up till last year, I owned a large Vbulletin board myself.... we had 250,000 members at the time we closed the site (closed it for legal reasons)

We had this video in our "forum rules" for newbies... not sure if it got posted here before - but some of you may get a chuckle out of it...

http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting

Those that haven't noticed the aggression, don't read all the threads (like the mods do) I know the work involved with skimming so many threads, and they truly depend on us the users to click on that "report thread" button sometimes to report things that they have not read yet....

Some people coem on here for help, and only come back, whenever they need help. Others, like us (who found this thread, for example) take the time to read, and contribute, and have likely seen some aggression at some point. It's human nature. The bigger the board gets, the worse it is. When my board was 10,000-30,000 members, it was one of the best of it's type..... as we got too big, the troublemakers decided to come have some fun, it was inevitable...

The site will probably need to learn to ignore the troublemakers, and keep the forums as informative, light, and fun as possible for the real members who read and appreciate the site.

I've taken abuse here for my stupidty.
I've taken far harsher abuse on other forums.
This forum doesn't even make my radar as abusive.

Re: Forum hostility

This forum is the only reading I do anymore besides blueprints but is very relaxing and educational for my recreation vehicle RECREATION!!!!!!! remember to those that consistantly offend others with their knowledge of this boating subject especialy when help is trying to be had and are made to look like morons by the above said hidden in their comments I would mention names but do not wish to offend those who offend others. I usually do not comment back except when I'm is insulted verbaly which s something do not tolerate from anyone without a response it's just my nature.

I would like to turn in EZMOBEE!!!!!!!!!!!

:D

I have a slight sense of humor (or I think I do....) and on one or two occasions I have been flamed by someone that didnt either get or appreciate my humor....
The Newbies can be educated or booted, I think we are amongst the safest, most civil bunch of net nerds (oh, hope nobody is offended...lol) out there.

Re: Forum hostility

I have noticed some offensive replies to some posts for help as of late, so I would have to vote yes.

But, I dont read every single post here either, so I may not have a clear picture of this issue.

We all need to remember that everybody isnt on the same level in boating/boat repair. Most of the people stopping in for help are simply looking for answers to a problem so they can get out on the water with their pride and joy. I know I was when I first signed up and Im still looking for stuff to learn. I dont think I'll ever know all I want to know to tell the truth.

Anyway, thats my 2 pennies.

Re: Forum hostility

Being new to this forum, I honestly can't say. Being familiar with several forums from archery to history over the past several years I have noticed there are times it truly seems forum hostility is out there. I try to remember when I post as well as when I read another's post that I can not honestly read one's expression - just their words. In general I think the majority of those who post on any site don't try to upset the boat (no pun intended) - they just talk like they normally do. When we expose ourselves to the public, we each have to remember we're opening ourselves up to what and who ever is out there. Each of us is in control of letting ourselves get caught up or clicking out of a bad situation ;)

Re: Forum hostility

I'm not voting, but I have noticed some remarks. Personally, I'm a "big boy" and the comments wouldn't bother me, but I think people are on here for a few reasons. Obviously, for help with current problems they're having, you won't find a better place to learn, and it can be fun just to "hang out" here. The things that I think are unnecessary are comments like, "Like I told you before", "If you would actually read this", etc. There are different levels of intelligence and understanding. If you're willing to take the time to help someone, there's no need to berate them for not understanding. With all that being said, I have never had anyone say/post/reply anything to me that I thought was offensive.

Re: Forum hostility

And thats exactly how we moderate. We have a special section that only mods can see and discuss questionable posts and member's behavior. If we poof someone without discussion, we have a place for an explanation on that post that only we can see.

We try our very best to PM the offender but in some cases we don't.

Did I mention, we double up during a full moon. ;):p

"Poof"? A reportable offense me thinks :p

Re: Forum hostility

As many people have stated this site is user friendly. the first and most important reason being it is like talking to family, the second reason is the BS is just like you get from your family, and the third reason is the help and support you get like you would from family.
When you get so many people that have typed their fingers off to their forum friends, they some times forget that there are new people that have not participated as long as some.
I hope this makes sense.

Re: Forum hostility

i havent had time enough to watch the forum as much ....so i have not seen too much abuse.

however "bob the mod" ( :D ) had some great points on page one.

when i joined this forum......spinner (lester) made me feel like a long lost friend.
i allways try to keep that the bar, for my responces (lol...i really fail some times  )

but all in all.....the HUGE increase in numbers here is due to the mods....the safety of the forum.. and the help from all of you!....
i think this forum rocks.....and im glad when i see a new record broken

Re: Forum hostility

I know some people get frustrated by people who stop in and ask a question that has been covered repeatedly, when they could use the search function. I try to be friendly, but direct when suggesting they search.

I've been a part of MANY forums, and one, pirate4x4 could be especially grating. I was on there for many years, and was known as one of the more callous members, giving newbs a hard time.
I've been banned and unbanned(or band as they call it)many time.

Recently, great things have been happening in my life and I am being positive in all aspects, so I have no desire to go to that particular forum ever again!

A great deal of this "hostility" would go away if everyone would simply switch from: "You're wrong!" to "I disagree and here's why..."

I disagree with that statement and my reason is...:D:):p;)

I think that is a very reasonable and common sense approach to talking or dealing with anyone, anywhere. I will try very hard to remember that in the future. Heck, it might even help me to talk to my 15 yr old hard headed daughter.

Re: Forum hostility

Is it me or has the hostility on this forum gone up in the recent months? It seems a pattern of attacking those who answer questions is beginning to be more the norm than answering questions themselves.....

I have noticed more aggressive and sarcastic posts lately. The posts were from new members. Probably takes a while before people realize that behavior isn't needed or wanted here.
