There are times to talk, and times to not talk, she has to pick her moments, and you have to listen. You will figure this out, every engine has it's own sound, some louder than others. As you can see most are laughing with you about this. If it's a serious problem, the inboard does run a bit quieter, but not all of them. Show her this thread, and hope she has a sense of humor.

I do have a friend who uses two hearing aids, one to hear people and the other he wares around the house. I will let you guess what one is turned way down.

Take her out at night, "No Wake" then tell her she has to whisper so you can listen for the dogfish barking.

the deck boats dont have much of a windshield do they? I know i can converse just fine on plane as long as we are behind the windshield. now if i flip the bolster and my head is above it, game over.

^This is as big of a problem as the engine noise is. The wind noise usually makes communication difficult, even at 20-30mph speeds, so combined with engine noise it makes most conversations impossible without yelling. Now if you have a windshield, it's not much of an issue, and an inboard or I/O makes it even better. However, sometimes it's best to have "quiet time" until you get to where you're going.

Ayyy, two strokes love to cruise just above normal conversation level. My 1990 200 hp Merc will drown out the wife and kids just fine, what the Merc does not drown out the stereo surly will ;). Enjoy!

Hi Everyone,

We bought our first boat this spring. It's a 16' VIP Deckboat with a 115hp Mercury outboard.(2 cycle) When traveling above Slow No Wake my Wife gets frustrated because i can't hear what she says unless she yells. Is this "normal"? Are there any easy solutions other than Obama's teleprompter? Your input is greatly appreciated.

How do you communicate if she sees a hazzard befor I do?

She should get your attention by waving one hand at you, and pointing downward toward the object with the other hand.

Note, she has to keep both hands visible to you while doing this, and she must point downward at the water or it will look like she is pointing at something on shore. And if she suddenly stops and grabs the boat with both hands, it means its too late and you are about to hit something.

Seriously, this is how we have done it for many years when we run unfamiliar rivers and lakes up in Canada.

I showed my g/f a series of hand signals we use when cruising around(turn this way, stop, danger there, another boat over there), much easier than trying to yell 'look out' or such.. and more precision in what we're communicating about with more reaction time.

I have a small boat with a center console and an outboard 2 stroke. No way i can hear anything above idle. Wife sits in front of me on the console seat, if i lean over her shoulder and she yells we can communicate. Otherwise we just relax and watch the scenery. And she cant point to tell me where to go just fine

She gets mad when i try to crank the stereo however. She wants to listen to the motor and the music is for when we stop to swim.

Newer motors are a lot quieter than the old ones my 2003 150 is silent compared to my 1988 70, and my 1972 20 is a real screamer (all 2 strokes).

While doing some work on it, I ran the 70 without the cowl and without the carb cover. it was louder than that Aerosmith concert in 1974 when I sat inside the speaker.

You didn't specify the year of your Merc 115 but if yours is a 2+2, switching to an older inline-6 "tower" may solve your problem. They're noisy at any speed, more like a deep grunt...:joyous:

My motor is a 1983 Mercury 6 cylinder. Yes my wife reads the comments with me. The "humor" is greatly appreciated!

The nice thing about smaller SC fishing boats is that when underway the pilot seat and the passenger seat are right next to each other. Almost shoulder to shoulder so it's an easy lean to speak to the Mrs and to sneak a smooch every now and then!
