Well I've never seen one of those. Its probably for trailering. Can you lift the drive up and remove it?

So, Have you had the boat out at all yet? Have you checked over anything else? Have you had it running on muffs. Have you replaced the impeller?
Any tune up work?

Well I havent had her out yet, when I got her she had been sitting for a year, I replaced the carb, fuel pump, and did the thru hull exhaust, replaced the oil and filter, I havent replaced the plugs or wires yet, they seem to be fine, she starts right up on the first click, and nah I dint use the muffs, I used a huge half barrel full of water, and I though the volvo penta 280's didnt have a impeller in it, I was told they draw water via a belt driven pump on the engine no? but then again when I was going thru a compartment on the boat I found a new impeller in its baggie, before I put plugs wires cap and rotor on I wanted to switch over to a pertronix elec ignition, do you think that would be a good idea?

Your right about the water intake. The impeller is buried behind the pully where the big hose from the outdrive comes to the front of the engine goes. As you know the impeller is the heart of the cooling system.
Here's a link to the cooling.

#12 is the pump with the impeller

http://www.volvopentastore.com/COOLING_SYSTEM_AQ240A_77/dm/*******.803897334--**********.841174101--store_id.366--view_id.316944

Have you checked/changed the oil in the outdrive? takes 30w motor oil.

I think the Petronics conversion is a good idea for most. I enjoy replacing and adjusting my points in the spring. May swear by the electronic ignition.

If it is running good now I wouldn't start replacing parts that work. At least until you put some time into the boat and determine its worth putting money into.

I hate to say it but I think you should open up the raw water pump and make sure there is an impeller in there and that it's in better shape than the one you have in the bag. I've heard of people taking out the impeller for storage.

I hear ya, and as far as the boat goes, I only paid $1800 for it, and its really solid, the old man who owned it took care of her, I have all the pics of him on it at lake mead thruout his years of ownership, he wasnt the type of man who ran the hell out of it his daughter said he barely went above 15 mph most of the time, they were pretty good honest people.
Ok so now Capt where is that impeller at again? behind the belt driven pump on the engine?

O yeah how do I check the oil level in the outdrive is there a inspection spot on it somewhere?

Re: Hey guys can I take my boat out with my current tilt issue?

Go to the link, scroll down to #12 on the parts list and click where it says sub-chart.

#6 in the subchart is the impeller.

It looks like if you take out the three screws, #13 in the subchart, the cover will come off exposing the impeller. Watch for the other parts, orings etc.

You'll have to loosen the belt and maybe remove the pully, I can't tell from the parts breakdown.

The screw in the top cover of the outdrive is a dipstick.

Have you had it up to operating temp in your barrel? Is there a guage with temp numbers or just color codes? Is the alternator charging? You checked with a volt meter,14 volts with the RPMs up to 1500 or so?

Hmmmmm, ok Ill have to go look at the top of the outdrive in a sec, and when I had it running in the barrel it said I think it was 140 ish but the gauge was kinda faded from the sun im going to replace it maybe tonight, and its a real gauge like a stewart warner or something with numbers on it, and yep i do believe the alt was charging I think I read 12.5 on the amp gauge on the dash but ill mos def double check that tonight I forgot about that stuff man lolz im just like thinking ok gas, some powerade and ice and I wanna go lolz but ill give those things a look over later on this afternoon but im going out to check that outdrive dipstick now

Re: Hey guys can I take my boat out with my current tilt issue?

Those are some wild looking boats. Noone has boats that big around here. Lots of small lakes.

I have a 20' bowrider and its often the larger of the boats at the landings.

Re: Hey guys can I take my boat out with my current tilt issue?

really? yeah but you got a better power to weight ratio than these older bigger boats, dude Capt I twisted the ends off of two of my husky flatheads that screw on the top of the outdrive is way way tight, I jus hit it with some wd40 to see if that helps
