Re: Hi. Can anyone identify this boat??
so let me get this straight...you think because a vast majority of people dont know about something it makes it worthless? lol. collectors would slap you for saying that.[/url]
no.. quite contrary.. if you have lots of money and can see a pontially good deal.. then broadcast it to the heavens.. get everybody into classics to come and try to buy the piece out from under you.
what I am referring to is classically called a barn find.. some guy has something old sitting out back.. he might not know the worth.. if you present it as not worth much.. you'll get a better deal.. I am not saying its junk.. i am saying.. save yourself the cash.. dont walk up and say.. gee that old boat.. I did some research.. its a 196? this or that.. extreemly rare. ... suddenly in the owners mind.. this isnt an old boat.. its an old classic..and very rare.. I can get more $$ out of it.. subsequently it will sit in the weeds.. rotting away because suddenly instead of $150.. the guy wants $1050..
granted the days of "barn finds" are just about gone.
I like to drive down country roads past farms.. I see lots of old equipment that is no longer servicable.. these farmers would love to get rid of it.. but why bother.. if you came and said.. i will haul all your old equipment off for the price of scrap .. you give him what he thinks its worth.. and within that old machinery might be a rare piece that when restored is worth 10 times what you bought the whole pile for..
but for me.. I love to build and tinker.. so if I can by a potential classic for $150.. my budget just grew. I love looking for deals like that.. this old tractor I am referring to.. was posted on craigs list.. it was an odd ball..missing parts.. but it had the "look".. so I contacted the guy and went and looked at it... show pics to my dad (an old farmer) then I dug and dug and dug.... I finally figured out what it was.. 1 yr later.. I contacted the guy.. he hadnt sold it.. so now knowing what it was.. I knew what a good deal would be.. so i offered him..(significantly less than originally posted)
now my dad and I are restoring this very rare tractor.. it was built in longmont colorado, and this is the only one known to exist in colorado.
when I bought it and told the former owner what it was he was impressed by what I had discovered.. he said he had tried to find information but was unable to....and with tractors.. there were alot of one of a kind or home made ones.. this could have been a home made.. but it diddnt quite look that way to me.. ther were not serial numbers.. nothing.. even the engine in it was not original.. home made ones, while having a huge cool factor indeed are not worth much.. but the rare ones, having more value will never have the value that more popular brands do.. purly because nobody knows anything about them... but the precieved value is quite high..
I remember back in the early 80's when there was a resurgance in the old ford mustangs (1964 1/2/ 1965).. prior there were tons of those things around... then suddenly almost overnight.. they got valuable.. I spied a 1968 convertable not running sitting for years.. the precieved value went from $250 to $2500 overnight... and it sat for at least 10 more years.. untouched.. because the owner precieved the value at more than it actually was..
so my boat.. not running, barretta.. but I love the lines.. i decided I wanted that boat and what price I was willing to pay.. so i waited out the owner.. so I got the boat I wanted.. for the price I wanted to pay.. he was happy to finally have it gone, and I was happy to have it..
in both cases.. the guy I bought my boat from.. and the guy I bought the tractor from.. they both said.. I want to see it when its done.. .. so its not like I am sneaking around stealing candies from babies.... besides if you collect something thinking to make $$ you never will ...collect or buy what you like.. the value it has to you is most often way more than you can get for it.
now back to the regularly scheduled thread. diddnt mean to hijack..
