Re: How did you spend your memorial day?

I took Thursday & Friday off for a 5-day weekend. Took the kids toobing/swimming at the river on Friday because I knew the weekend would be too crowded on the waterways, not to mention the impending TS Beryl. Me and the kids had a great time on Friday. Only wish one of my kids was old enough to drive the boat so I could enjoy the toobing as well.

Re: How did you spend your memorial day?

Made reservations at Lake Trinidad State Park back in November for Thursday the 24th-Monday the 28th.

Thursday-Arrived with kids, wife and 2 sets of friends. Set up camps (3 campers), put boats in water around 1:30pm, pulled tubes with kids for about an hour (was windy and getting worse), pulled both boats off water around 3:00pm. Went back to camp and drank lots of beer. Decided to to go play in water with our inflatable island, 7 kids and 6 adults (max capacity was 6 persons), anchored about 10 foot off shore, got wet, drank more beer and after about 45 minutes decided to go back to camp and drink more beer!

Friday-Woke up with hangover, made breakfast, got boat ready to go around 10:00am, put in water, flooded engine, drained battery trying to start...went back to camp and took 2nd marine battery out of camper put back in boat, it was dead. Wind was picking up and had 2-3 waves on Eastern side of lake...decided too windy at this point, took kids and boat back to camp went to Walmart bought new battery, installed and drank beer. 3rd set of friends showed up, help set up their camper, drank even more beer, grilled Bleu Cheese burgers and played 'washers' until about midnight.

Saturday-Woke up with a hangover, way to windy to take boats out. Have a few bloody mary's and more beer, since it was so windy (gusts up to 50mph) we decided to make a redneck swimming pool in the back of buddy's Dodge Ram! played in pool and finished with washers and was forced to attend a free concert at the visitor's center, went back to camp, drank beer and played washers...

Sunday-Woke up without hangover (small victory), still too windy to go play in water, some new friends showed up around 10:00, drank more beer, played more washers...decided to go take kids to the lake at about 4:00ish for a few blasts around (even with 2-3 waves!) Put boat on water, ran from East to West reached 57mph (gps) launched boat completely put of water no less than 8 times in the 1/2 mile run, turned around and ran back to cove where everyone was hanging out. Traded kids and ran to about 50mph from East to West ran back to launch and pull boat out...too windy. Went back to camp, everyone BBQ'd and we had smores around 9:00pm....

Monday Woke up around 7:00am, casually packed up and headed home was home by 11:00am without any incidents/drama.

All in all a great relaxing long weekend spent with kids and out closest friends!!!

Re: How did you spend your memorial day?

I am retired, so Saturday and Sunday were normal, except got to watch 3 great races on Sunday. Moderated iboats about 4 hours each day.

Yesterday I went to our small, local cemetery, which holds war dead from the Civil War (mostly Confederates), Spanish American War, both World Wars and Korea. None from the middle east, yet.

It was lonely. There were a scattering of other white haired locals honoring fallen relatives and ancestors, but that was it.

Saturday: Took the boat out for the first time with my dad and brother to Ca?o Matias (Salinas, PR) and spent the day relax and bottom cleaning, scrubbing the ugly off the paint.

Sunday: went to the same place with the Wife, son and friends, too crowded got there early and was so packed cpuld not leave until dark but still had an AWSOME day.
Also made some great friends along the way, so many people, not one would hesitate to give me a hand knowing I was a niewb.

Monday, spent the entire day at the dock giving the boat some TLC, inside and out.

Saturday late nite: Took the dog to the emergency room. Emergency room 1hr away. Left dog over nite for I/Vs. Dog's fine. Got back around 1am. Found out lightning hit our favorite tree that's 20 feet from the house. We'll see if it lives. More upset about the tree....

Re: How did you spend your memorial day?

Thursday--took off work that day; wife and I picked up one boat from the shop and launched and ran the other out to a barrier island where we stay; nice boat ride through the marsh; set 4 crab pots; had martinis and fresh tuna; just the two of us on 6 miles of beach, miles of open marsh, and no houses except way back on shore.

Friday--worked on other boat--launched, ran but had engine problem, replaced power pack, didn't fix it; pulled it out. No luck clamming. Wife and I flounder fished in the marsh (she got 1 keeper). Picked up daughter and BF and boated out to island, picked up other couple and boated out; pulled and rebaited the pots and got 28 keeper crabs plus one keeper flounder; watched the sunset over the marsh (and over the rim of a G&T).

Saturday--decided not to work on other boat; went to shore for stuff (incl. clams); wife, friend and I flounder fished, hooked a giant sting ray and also a sea turtle; one keeper. Saw a big group of kayakers, mostly young girls and probably a scout trip. boated 3 other couples out to the island including one low tide run that was on a skim of water! Pulled the crab pots and got 41 keepers. Beach-combing. Seafood feast and star-gazing.

Sunday--ran two couples to shore; 3 guys and I went flounder fishing but only got one shark, one warning from USCG for expired registration, rescued one stranded jet skiier. Shot pistols and skeet. More beach combing.

Monday--beach combing and found dead turtle; took two trips in boat to leave the island; hauled out one boat and took other to shop; returned home invigorated by 5 days of salt air, boat runs and seaside living!

As for crazies, even USCG said everyone in that part of the world was behaving. Each day saw enought boats to make it interesting but only an occasional annoyance. Everyone waves; some stop to talk; most give you wide clearance when you are drifting and fishing even though the guts are tight. There was a large crowd of boats and families out on a point at an ocean inlet; it was nice to see them enjoying themselves--at a distance. The one jet ski was broken down and stranded (ha ha) Only saw two people in 4 days on our part of the beach since it's hard to get to. great weather; bugs weren't bad. Even the traffic home Monday was nothing.

Re: How did you spend your memorial day?

Well, I WANTED to spend the weekend in Nanticoke, fishing in my freshly powerwashed, re-riged, and tuned-up boat. I finally got it set up real nice - rod holders everywhere!

But NOOO!
I had to spend the weekend laying on the beach in Ocean City with the family. AND I forgot all the surf fishing tackle. I was actually stupid enough to be annoyed by this development.

After a couple of hours on the beach, reading my xmas present book "Chesapeake Light Tackle, by Shawn Kimbro", (and checking out the view thru my dark sunglasses) I came to my senses.

This is gonna be a great summer. I can feel it. I am de-carbed and ready! :)

At the beach I saw old dudes surf fishing, and young dudes kite flying. Each type holding onto the end of a long string attached to expensive equipment. Both catching exactly the same number of fishes. It did look like both groups were enjoying themselves equally. I couldn't decide which group to envy.

Still can't.

I spent Memorial Day in quiet remembrance on Snake Island. Sunday was a different story. Being a big fan of chaos'n mayhem'n destruction'n and debauchery'n such I went down to the Party Cove/Redneck Yacht Club party @ Boca Grande. I was not disappointed. Had to be 350-400 boats there by mid afternoon. Phew! What a madhouse ...

Took the wife and kids tubing Friday on the river. Me and my son went out fishing Saturday. Took the wife and kids to Lake Maurpas sand bar Sunday and did some more tubing. Monday bought a bigger tube so I can ride.

Re: How did you spend your memorial day?

I got suckered into inviting 6 (5+ my son) 17 year old boys out. I drove the boat, tended the ropes, put down the ladder, pulled up the ladder, got out the skis, put away the skis, got out the wakeboard, put away the wakeboard, got out the kneeboard, put away the kneeboard, blew up the tubes, etc... I did get TWO thank you's at the end of the day.

Oh yeah, the lake was crazy. Thanks for asking.

Pinned to a bench press bench. Yep, when the younger crowd (30ish) left the weight thing and went to the BBQ, I thought to try and see if I still had it. Lot's of side chuckles when the rescue team came to free me.:D

Fishing for perch....

IMG_1145.jpg

I seriously could not tell. Is that the bait? Or the catch?

If it's the bait, that is the most realistic lure I've ever seen. If not, I hope your state limit is based on poundage, not fish numbers!

BTW, I love your sig quote........... I just stole it, which by definition is cool, right?

"Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of anyone that threatens it."

I love Caddyshack :)

It wasn't all bad, and the two thank you's did seem sincere. A couple of the boys kind of set me off, not really doing much of anything and skulking off with out so much as a "see ya". Of course they also managed to eat about $300 worth of food and filled the boat twice with gas. Here is the "crew" on the big tube (yup, all 6 on one tube):
