1985 evinrude 60 hp.

It's not charging. The stator has 3 yellow wires.
I checked the regulator/rectifier and it shows not running 12.945 and running with throttle tab up 13.004.this was checked directly from the wire that is suppose to charge the battery(red wire) on the regulator.

Re: How to test a stator

Measure, with your volt-ohmmeter, the voltage across any two of the three wires while running. Set the VOM on AC volts, maybe the 25 or 50 volt scale.
When running, you should see upwards of 18-20 volts. Do this on all three possible combinations of two yellows out of three.
All three pair combinations should give the same results.
If you get voltages as described above, the stator is probably good.

Not sure how you went about checking the rectifier.....usually cannot do a real good test on those packages using an ohmmeter.

ok i did that it is showing only 3 volts...... so i got the idea to unhook the battery and it still runs? could the stater be rusty? the motor came from a salt water state here.

Re: How to test a stator

They run without batteries. Battery is only used when starting. After start, stator generates all operating voltages.

You sure you measured right? Three VAC on all three pairs (combinations of two) evenly and equally?
Sure it wasn't 30 VAC?

Double check your work, especially the meter settings.

If you are sure it is only three VAC, then your stator is bad.

ok the charge coil has black suff running out? could it be bad?
they were all around 3 volts.i dont remember to be exact

If you see black ooze that's usually a pretty good indicator that its no good.

Re: How to test a stator

Black ooze could mean that the stator got hot enough to melt the clear coating on the wires inside where they are coiled. That would have made most of the wires short together causing a much lower output. You could check resistance on the stator with your voltmeter set to ohms but you would have to know the range of what is normal. My guess would be 30 to 60 ohms.
Did you check output from the stator with the wires connected or disconnected?

I checked where they go to the plastic block.go from the stator to the plastic.connected

Re: How to test a stator

Might want to disconnect them and check resistance. And while their unhooked check the rectifier.

The stator looks like new.do I need to put it back together and test the stator with the wires unhooked? And I also bet the regulator is bad.how do I check it? Thanks

Re: How to test a stator

The stator does not need to be installed to test resistance. Do you have a meter that tests resistance? (ohms)
Does your motor even have a regulator?

check on cdi electronics for dva charts. they have the volt and ohm range on it

looked up specs. on the stator cdi electronics dva charts. on the charge side it will be your brown to brown/yellow wires 450-550 ohms or 150-400 v. power side na. on the trigger it has for the wires white to blue, purple, green 38-42 ohms or 0.6v+ you can double check go to cdi electronics. trouble shooting guide

Ok with the wires unhooked (the yellow stator wires) at idel it's at 5 volts and when you rev it it goes to 15.does that sound like its good?

Re: How to test a stator

on my 120 it says power side ohms should be 93-105 and volts should be 11-22. dont know if it would be the same for your motor or not
