Re: I would like to introduce myself, and talk about my rebuild.

Well today is day 4 I think. I was able to grind, grind then I did a little more grinding again. I got my boat close to ready to think about fixing the holes. I need to do work on them first to get them ready to fix the holes.

Question! Should I take my boat outside and run a hose on it to wash all of the dust out? Then bring it in to my garage and dry it out? I have a gas furnace in the garage that will work great. Would that help the FG to stick better when I get to doing that?

Here is what she looks like now.

It may not look like it but I ground every inch on the inside. May have missed a few 1/4 inches but don't tell no one.

To all thanks again! This is like having 100 best friends over helping but I don't have to buy you any beer. (if you want one go in to the fridge and help yourself)

The water might help get the dust out but to me wouldent be worth the time waiting for it to dry :)

The best way to prep the hull for glassing is wipe it down with acetone. Go in one direction so you wipe the contaiminents out, dont swirl or change directions so you get it as clean as possible.

Rick, I was in the 56th Arty group, 41st FA, (Pershings), a 100 years ago....
Anyway, was looking at your shop and floor. Get that FB grinding dust outta there man! You are breathing that crap. It will kill ya.
If you do water the hull down, it'll dry in no time if drained and you can check for leaks.

Re: I would like to introduce myself, and talk about my rebuild.

Nova,
I will clean it out today. I have been warring protection when I work out there. When it gets to the end of the day I am worn out and did not clean up. I'm going to pull the boat out , sweep up then blow out the garage with the compressor. I have a big door in the front of that garage and a man door in the back. When I work I have them open and two fans blowing the air through the garage. I know no matter what some dust gets in through the mask.

What was your duty station while you were attached to these wonderful implements of destruction? PM me the response, it was 100 years ago but there still is O.B.S.A.C.

It?s raining cats and dogs!

It?s raining cats and dogs!

I decided that I?m going to drag the boat outside and let the rain clean it out. Then put it back in the garage with the heater on after I clean the garage out.

It will have time to dry out for the next few days, I will not be working on it much if at all.

Last night my mother died and the next few days will be filled with personal and legal things.

Hi Rick,

So very, very sorry for your loss...

A thought that might help just a little... In 2000 my dad passed... A couple of years ago my father in law passed... In each case I kept something with me that helped me through (and kept my mind off of) the "hurry up and wait" part of the process. For me it was a stupid boat building book. It's different for everyone.

Anyway, thoughts and prayers go out to you...

Back to work on my boat 4th or 5th working day

Back to work on my boat 4th or 5th working day

Well I?m back on the boat today, taking a brake right now so I can post this. The doctor got my new medicine to the dose that is now helping me to get up and around again. I?m feeling pretty good now and have the energy and motivation to get back to work on my boat.

I had to clean out the garage again and get all of the FG dust out. I brought the boat back inside and lifted it up (precariously right now)

002-6.jpg

so I can get the trailer out from under it and take a good look at the bottom of the boat.

010-3.jpg

I received a helpful hand (a care package) from a very generous person today via United Postal Service.

012-4.jpg

He is a frequent user of Iboats but I think he would like his identity to be kept personal. I will now have the ability to continue work on my boat for some time.

014-2.jpg

A roll of F.G.!

013-2.jpg

Today I will look the boat over real well and find out my next step to proceed. I also now can look at the trailer and see what work is needed there.

Not much really a light fixed and a bar that is bent straitened take the wheels off and grease the bearings if they are good enough. I think I should look for new tires and rims the tires are dry rotted and the rims are overly small for the trailer. What do you think? . I will undoubtedly grind, sand and paint the trailer before next spring.

More photos in next post.

Re: I would like to introduce myself, and talk about my rebuild.

I'm thinking the tires and wheels are to small for this but then again it has worked for the last 38 years now.

I'm sure the shocks need to replaced also.

Thats about all I got done today before my back started to hurt pretty bad. Now it's time for the shower and something to eat.

glad your back.. happy to hear about. it.. looks like your going to be flipping they hull .. that will be fun..

yea.. my boat has small trailer tires too.. but oh well what can you do with out re-doing the axle..

mine are identical to those sold at harbor freight. (the 12" little "donuts") so picking up new one isnt and issue.

Re: I would like to introduce myself, and talk about my rebuild.

Couple of questions/comments.

Is that a Holsclaw trailer? The thing to worry about with the tires is if they are the right load rating for the weight. I wouldn't worry too much about diameter, snowmobile trailers have tiny wheels on them. If they are the right load range and are properly inflated and not weather checked, I wouldn't worry too much. And unless the shocks are leaking, I wouldn't worry much about them either. Most trailers don't have shocks.

Now, I have a buddy that has a Fast Twin JUST LIKE YOURS, but it has a broken tiller handle. What do you know about that motor...he's offering it to me to tinker with. :D

I know I traded it for a 25 pound thrust electric motor. That?s it so far. The man was a disabled Vet also and had three boats and four motors and seen I was looking for one. He wanted to get a fellow vet back in the water and gave me a great deal. The motor runs and has no real problems but I will take it in and have it looked at this winter to make sure about that. Then when i get the books (they are listed on my other thread) I will maintain it myself.

Here is a thread I started about the motor and the respoces I received yeasterday. In short they say that they are a great motor and run for many years. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1906115#post1906115

About the tires and such, the rubber is very dry rotted and they need to be replaced as the man said in this post they can be bought easy and cheap. The name of the trailer is unknown right now until the sun comes back tomorrow that will have to remain a mystery. The shocks are original equipment and they don?t seem to be showing any leaks. I?m thinking of just taking the tires off and wire wheel the rims clean and buy new rubber for them. I will make sure they are load rated and highway rated also. Some Wal-Mart 97 cent a can black paint on the rims and that will look great from a 60 mile an hour roll.

Re: I would like to introduce myself, and talk about my rebuild.

You may have some luck if you go to your local big box lumber yard....you may find new tires and rims for the same price you'd buy just for the rubber some place else. I bought two new tires for my aluminum boat and found new rims and tires for less than I paid per tire. Granted, it was a lower load rating, but they would have worked fine.

Mike as it ends up yes it is a Claw full name Holsclaw model # B-700 Trailer weight is 205 pounds and GVW is 920 pounds S# 80 761
I read that ir will be hard to find parts for it. Funny thing is that the boat I had in Alska had the same trailer with it even though it was an 18 foot flat bottom boat.
i think I will stick with the current type of rims and wheels but I will look around as you suggested to find tires and rims together.

Rick:

You may find that the cost to get a new rim is not that much higher than the cost for the tire alone. I replaced a tire (somewhat larger) and rim for $40. the tire alone would have been $30. Plus I get to keep it as an emergency spare. That was from Belle Tire. I would definately check out Harbor Freight as well.

Good luck

All work stoped!

All work stoped!

All work has stoped as per this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=235651

I am going to see if my brother-in-law has one of these types of masks. If not I will get one somehow. I have been using a little better than just a paper mask. It was rated for fiberglass and is still paper with a filter type cloth between and a in-out vent in front. Like I said it was rated for fiberglass but after reading Oops post and what he said I am stopping work until I get the proper mask for the job.

Until then I can start working on the wood stringers, transom and templates cutting them and doing layout work. I have a little bit of designing I need to do to replicate a part of the boat that is missing

cadet-back.jpg

A sort of replacement was there when I got the boat but it was not even close to what it should have looked like.

004.jpg

So for the next few days or so I will start making the template and cut out the wood for this part. Then when I get to that part I can install it glass it in and paint it to match. I am very good with wood working and I know I can replicate to a tee what it should really look like. If I can replicate a piece of trim from a 1800?s cabinet ( years ago I was commissioned to do this, I was paid $300.00 to make a piece 8 inches long) I can do this easy.
