Hey DF, you won't get a good bond over the varnish, the Gorrila glue like the wood damp for a good cure. Looking real good so far.

i'm with JB and Doxer on this: you need to glue it all up before you start to varnish, esp for structural stuff lie you're talking. . otherwise, your glue will only be stuck to the varnish and not the wood substrate. the only glue i'm aware of that might hold varnished wood together is epoxy.

Thanks all, well since I have a board meeting all day tomorrow and wont be able to work on the boat. I busted butt (and my back) and got the carpet backing ground off, inside cleaned, and coat-it applied. Hopefully it will be dry enough to work on top of by Wed.

Re: I'm back, 78' SS resto

I was needed by the kids and couldn't finish my last update, 23 month old squirming on my lap wanting me to read a book and not play on my phone.

So I got the coat-it on but ran a little short, I got all the seams done and most of the questionable rivets. I think my 3" brush was a little big for what I was doing and wasted a lot. I think I'll order some more to finish all the rivets and I want to coat the pitted inside of the transom skin after I fill some corrosion holes. I also got a couple coats of urethane on the tops of the front 2 deck sheets when I was taking a break from standing on ribs. Did I mention my back is sore.

Thanks captmills, I am looking forward to standing on a nice flat deck for a change while working on it. Right now the paint plans are Navy blue for the top sides, consoles, and original stripes and polished Aluminum everywhere else. Light grey carpet for all the horizontal places inside and navy carpet for all the vertical places inside.

-Jeff

in edit Little wore out today, where I was trying to go with all this, I've got enough done to put my stringers back in and get my floor supports laid out and glued before sealing them.

Aldi's has noodles on sale for $.99

I got 40 noodles this trip, any recommendations on how many I'll need for out side the stringers? I am planning on using sheet foam for the center.

Pic of my globby coat-it work

You might be good with the 40 considering I only used 72 overall.

Re: I'm back, 78' SS resto

Got my coat-it done, time to start Making decisions on how it goes back together. I took some pictures of a bracket I saw last week, so I am kind of leaning that way, knowing I can cut the transom down and build a splash well later if I need to. I also need some advice on how long to make and where to place the door for the ski locker. The ski's I measured where a little over 5', so minimum I'm thinking is 6' long with the door at the bow end?

I'll post some pics later when I get on my CPU of the bracket and of my transom fit/ coat-it job

Thanks, Jeff

Pic of my transom fitting, still need to trim it around the drain, but happy with the fit. I plan to drill some holes tomorrow, then pull it out and start sealing it.

On to the bracket, this was on a 20'+ tunnel hull with a 300 merc on it where I was camping last week.

It is pretty much 2 angle's bolted to the boat, 2 flats bolted to the angle, then a c channel for the motor mount and an adjustable tab on the bottom. I have no idea if its factory or home built, I did ask permission to look and take pictures, but the owner was busy and I didn't get to ask any other questions. It looks like it would be easy for me to build, and the tab could be adjusted to keep from purposing, my only concern would be if i can get enough weight in the front for the boat to sit level at rest with a v-4 evinrude hanging that far back.

Mine sits really level with a V4 on it, so with one set back a bit, it may lean a bit to the stern but probably not too bad.

Re: I'm back, 78' SS resto

Thanks EZ, I need to go get my motor and see what is gonna take.

Anyone have suggestions on ski locker length and door placement? I've read so many resto's in the last month they all kind of run together and I can't remember what I saw where, and search is not helping me very much.

Progress pic, got my reinforcement done on the front 2 deck sheets. I really wanted to overlap the seams, but using the aluminum strips was going to make it difficult.

Thanks, Jeff

pics can be deceiving

Skeg and prop are beat up pretty bad, he handed me the thermostat and housing in little bag, plugs are all pulled, needs some rewiring, was slow to accelerate when he used it last, and no controls or wire harness with it. I really haven't looked it over good yet

How do one find FREE motors? I've seen it quite a few times here on the board. Ain't noone giving away outboards in my neck of the woods! :(

It's not what you know, but who you know. It came from a friend of my fathers.

Mine came in 4 boxes:facepalm: Lower unit off. Carbs & carb parts (all there:confused:, maybe) were in a box all to themselves, yeah...... Guy said it's the way he got it & he wasn't as up for a project motor as he thought..... It may prove to be a lot like free boats: missing some parts & pieces and will require lots of time & some money to put right. But I can either part it out, fix it to sell it or find a hull that 'needs' it:eek: 3 guesses which is so low on the list it's on a whole different sheet of paper of the Admiral's order of preference?

On the up side, it came on an engine stand w/ the original service manual. Brought it home, unloaded it, and it's still as I got it, thru bolted on the engine stand.. w/ 4 boxes of parts.

Re: I'm back, 78' SS resto

been doing a lot of watching paint (urethane) dry on the deck, and staring at the hull. Jas's professional paintshoppro work inspired me to draw it out.

How it sits right now

option 1
I would just build a full width splashwell. This would allow easy mounting of a kicker. I would still use a 6"-10" setback or CMC power tilt so the splashwell wouldn't intrude any farther into the boat as the old cap (20" at the top)

option 2
This would be coping another starcraft that I have pics of but don't remember the model (second pic). Still use a setback to keep the motor from coming in to far.

or option 3
likely the quickest, easiest, most expensive, and no idea how well it will perform

Re: I'm back, 78' SS resto

my 2 pesos' worth: look at options 3 and 4. 4 would be the home-built alum pod which displaces enough water to offset weight of motor. very simple fabrication project and you could weld it up yourself with a spool gun for your MIG. or get a quote on just the TIG work if you did the cut and fit of the alum sheets (the time consuming part).

my thinking is based on idea that i hate to cut down that nice high I/O transom......i've had some days out fishing where i was taking water over the stern from a following sea.....makes me nervous, and the I/O transom eliminates that.
