The field expedient method of the strap between the duals works but..... you can catch hell getting that strap out and risk flattening a tire or two.........

Yup a nice 12000 winch would be nice for your birthday ;)

I have lots of trees, believe me! Also, I actually have a two speed transfer case on the truck, Just slipped off the side a bit.

Have you tried letting most the air out of the plow trucks tires, will give you alot more traction. By the way, you can spend half the amount of money on a super winch instead of a warn winch and still get some tackle for the boat :)

I can get a Warn, for a very good price, the guy that runs the company has been a good buddy, since we went to school back in the 70's

BUY THE WINCH. Do it tomorrow on your birthday! I would also get a pulley block, chains and straps (straps do the least damage)....... and then fill a #10 can with sand or cement to hang on the cable when it is out.

Good, I know who to call when I need a winch. :) Did you try letting almost all the air out of the tires? This usually works and is easy to do.

Just had a flash of "OH YA", since your going to be getting stuck for the most part plowing snow, recovery is going to be from the rear.

Get the winch set up with the tail that slides into the hitch receiver, hard wire the controls to the cab, so you can winch and backup at the same time.

I only run 10lb pressure in my tires during the winter, so I don't think I want to go any less as the side wall pressures are over 60-80lb depending on the load.

Re: In a bit of a pickle....Got the plow truck stuck!!

I have been digging this morning, it is going to take a while to get it dug out, what happened is I slid over a section that had been bermed up and dropped into the soft snow on the other side, It is currently high centered on the packed snow, so will have to dig it out, but I am going to get a winch, I figure this will probably happen again this winter, we seem to be getting really warm days, softening the snow up on the side of the road, then it gets really cold and hardening these berms up.

Unfortunately, even though a 4x4 3/4 ton with posi, this truck has very little clearance with the heavy flatbead and plow on it, so this summer, me thinks a lift kit is going to be in order as well.

I'm sure you probably know this... but don't forget rocking the blade side to side on the ground can work wonders to jarring the truck loose. ;)

Re: In a bit of a pickle....Got the plow truck stuck!!

Could use the "Maine winch" method a buddy of mine into mudding told me about.

Hook a rope to a stationary object. Wrap the other end of the rope around one of the front wheels, and put her in low gear. Of course this plan is bust if you have an open front diff, and if it didn't work I wouldn't be a bit surprised... :D

I've done this. It wasn't the smartest thing I've done but it worked. I have nightmares about what would've happened if the strap slipped off on the inside of the axle.

So that's what you call it!! A Maine winch. I thought it was just a dumb ***** mistake on my part.

Years ago we had a canoe loaded on the roof of the van. I thought the wife had tied off the front ropes as I tied off the rear. Hopped into the van, saw the ropes pulled over the hood, put the van in gear and drove forward. Guess what happened next.

Wife didn't know how to tie them off so she left the ropes dangling over the front bumper AND apparently directly infront of the tires. As the van drove forward the wheels roled over the ropes and proceeded to bend the canoe down over the front of the van. Promptly destroyed a $1600 canoe. A Maine winch huh?

Re: In a bit of a pickle....Got the plow truck stuck!!

Bubba,

I live in the woods, I have lots of trees to anchor to and I have the proper straps to do it with. This will not be my first winch, I had a 12K on the front of my Bronco, that got transferred to my Jeep, when I sold the Bronco. I also have a 5K on the front of my ATV.

But again, where I live, there are plenty of anchor points to attach to.

As far as mounting the winch, it will be mounted to the receiver hitch in the back, that is attached to the frame of the truck, currently the hitch has a 15K pintle hook in it.

Could be called other things elsewhere...
For all I know, the terminology was exclusive to my buddy's mudding club.
An educated guess is it's creation was inspired by the dynamics between Maine-o's, and Mass**les. Very complected to explain to an outsider... Bond-o would understand. It's a love-hate kinda thing... :D;)

I have used those on my ATV, but I would be very hesitant on a truck that weighs as much as mine, you would have to have a very large synthetic rope, like they use on Tub Boats to ensure it didn't break and slap ya around.
