Issues with boat carpet I got, What would you do?

Hey guys, need some advice. I'm rebuilding the bow deck in my boat since I didn't build it beefy enough the first time and it cracked in a bunch of places. While my main deck is vinyl, I do like carpet up in front where people sit (when I'm not fishing). The first time I built it I used Lancer Marine carpet which I got from Home Depot's web site. It was decent enough carpet. Cheap and adequate. Went to try to order that this time and they've stopped carrying it at HD. Looked for it elsewhere online and most places wanted to sell you a big 20' piece which is more than I need. I was on Veada's site order new hinges for my hatches and noticed they carried real nice looking carpet for a reasonable by the yard price. Marine Carpet 8 1/2 Foot by the Running Yard (3 ft x 8 1/2 ft)

Well they took forever to ship it which is holding up my project and today when it finally arrived I was absolutely appalled. They had folded it and jammed it in a small box. See the attached pictures. This carpet has a decent rubberized back and it my opinion, it's ruined. It will never lay flat. I called Veada and they said they always ship it like that. They asked me to take pictures and send it to them. I'm anticipating a fight. I'm not real worried though because I used PayPal and PayPal darn near always sides with the buyer.

Take a look at the pictures. Do you think I'm overreacting and that when glued down it'll be fine? Or do you agree it'll never lay flat and the backing is damaged?

I will add, if I wasn't in a hurry to get this done, I'd absolutely be sending it back or seeking a refund on a matter of principle. Even the lower end carpet I got from Home Depot was shipped in a nice roll.

Oh yeah, and they send me the wrong hinges too

Ayuh,.... How big is it,..??

Got an ole sheet of plywood, 'n a staple gun,..??

Stretch it out, Tight, 'n see if it lays down,...

Maybe steal the Admirals flatiron, 'n iron it out,...

That looks pretty bad. I would be sending it back and telling them to give there head a shake. That is ridiculous.. I can't see that ever being flat.

It's fairly heavy. I don't see it flattening out on it's own. At best, it could be smoothed out when adhered to a deck with glue.

When do you plan to use it,..??

Any flattenin' you can do Before, will make the job easier, 'n more likely for success,...

Steam a small section of it and see what kind of result you get - small steamer can be grabbed from Wally-wold if you don't have one. We have to do that with fabric graphics and carpet sometimes for work.

I'm thinking, stretch it out, steam it, and MAYBE it will be flat enough to glue. Not a good way to ship, and I wouldn't be happy!

Since time is of the essence, +1 on the stretching and steaming it.

The Admiral bought me a conair steamer a few years back...haven't used an iron since!

That really sucks EZ, I can't see that laying flat anytime soon. Sandwiching it between a couple sheets of ply may do it, but I doubt it. I know you want to get it done, but you may end up with a bunch of lifted areas if you try to use that stuff. I take it you have no local carpet places that carry outdoor carpet?

I like the steaming idea too.

If it was summer, you could lay it out in the sun. May have to wait a few months for that method though!

Yeah I know bruce. A good hot day in the sun and it'd prolly flatten right out. My mother-in-law does have a steamer so I may look into that. I have some extra so I may try gluing some down to a scrap piece of ply and see how it comes out. I'll let you all know what Veada comes back with. Glen I'm going to lay some heavy ply on it tonight and see that happens.

Send it back.

Anything you do to try to flatten it, they will say caused the damage.

Put in vinyl, then have a custom snap in piece of carpet made to go over it for when you have people sitting up there..

Send it back and go elsewhere. I doubt you will get it flat.

Yeah you can't do anything to it. If it doesn't fix it you'll be stuck with it.

I've had good luck with Cabelas materials. They always shipped rolled in a tube.

Sorry EZ that isn't going to lay flat ever. Send it back your boat is way to nice for substandard materials.

I agree with those who say to send it back. The issue is that if you try to fix it, but it doesn't work, they'll pounce on it being damaged by your actions, blah blah blah... And use it as an excuse to not give you back your money.

Furthermore, it would just be such a bother for something that should have come in a proper state anyway. Stretching, steaming, gluing... I'd rather get a normal carpet in the first place.

Good luck!

I would lay it out in the sun for a day.

It may flatten with steam or laying in the sun and after gluing, but I think it's damaged. Often when rubberized backing is bent and folded like that, the backing starts to separate. It might be fine for a little while, but by the end of summer, it will develop loose spots. Carpet isn't meant to folded and jammed in a box. If it was other vendors would ship like that.

I say return it, EZ.
