Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

QC thanks for all that info. That's just what I needed to see. Now I have an idea of what it is like out their and where or less those beaches and coves are more or less located. I know exactly what you mean about the winds. I've been out on Havasu when a Moonson ran right through and when it hits it comes at you quick. I literally had just enough time to throw all my gear in the boat and hauled *** out of their. That's when I was glad I bought the V-8 and floored it back to the ramp!!
Is it true that if you want to run your boat to the dam out of willow; that your limited on the horse power that is allowed on that side of Willow. I think it was like no more than 70 or 80 hp engines??

Angel...Yeah this is an awesome site..Tons of great info...I go to Mead monthly but usually fish in the lower basin as it is close to where I keep my boat..I"ve rented house boats from Callville and Echo Bay but never been up to Temple Bar or Greggs Basin..I was at Willow Beach in early January..Very quite with few boaters out...No trout are being stocked there for some reason but it such a neat place it didn"t really matter...Heading back to Nevada on Feb. 19th and then on Mar.19th...Jim..

I was there from 12/26 to 1/6...It got down to 25 a few nights and we had ice on our pool...Now to some people that"s not to cold but to us SoCal people thats a little chilly..It"s warmed up some but my son called me this week and said it was snowing a little on the west side of the Vegas Valley...It is doable if you dress warm...Jim..

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the heads up, I think I'll wait till it warms up a tad bit. Your right about being used to the Southern Cali weather. There's nothing like it!!

I was stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas with a Search and Rescue Squadron. I worked part time as an EMT-I at Lake mead with the national Park Service.

I would suggest you call the Park Ranger and try to glean some information from them. They are usually very helpful for people who want to play it safe as it makes their job easier.

There are a few islands on the lake you could camp at if you want to rough it and really be alone.

I have gone to the lake through North Las Vegas on Lake Mead Blvd and through Boulder City on HWY 95. Bother are easy rides.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

Hey there!

Boat camped on Lake Mead last year during memorial weekend. My buddy's family and my family launched out of Temple Bar. Our boats were Deep V hulls and I would not suggest launching out of there unless the water level rises or you have a shallow hull. I stayed right across the marina in the Temple area. We actually stayed in the "wild burro bay" . Sandy beach areas if you can find it. Beware of hidden rocks underwater. When you are on the beach and hiking around, you will soon find out why they call it "wild burro bay." Just watch your step  I have a marine radio set to the weather channel to monitor the weather. Sometimes the winds and rain just come right at you. Always prepare for the worst. We knew when we were going, we were going to hit some rainy weather. Our boats had an enclosure and we brought along a tarp for the top and lots of clamps! Prepare for the rain, but also prepare for the winds! Propane stove allowed us to cook when it cleared, but we had a hot pot for cup of noodles and bread and sandwich meat just in case. It rained heavily on us for a day and a half- off and on, but enjoyed it nevertheless. Two pics from my trip! have a look and enjoy.

Joe

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

Angel....I just got back from Temple Bar...My son and I camped on a beach a couple miles up stream of Temple Bar...We had great weather at around 80 degrees and 55 at night ..No wind at all..Water temp was 59 to 66..We did not swim..Fished and caught large mouth, small mouth and stripped bass..Bullhead catfish at night...Stayed 2 nights and moved to Willow Beach and camped up river near mile marker 52...Weather still holding good...Caught a 6 lb. striper at dusk when the river was flowing a little higher...Went back to our place in Henderson and the wind came up pretty good for 2 days....Back in the OC tonight and all is well...I"ll keep checking back here to see if I will be back out at Mead next month when you go...Jim..

NO WHINERS.......Glad to hear you guys had a great time and weather! So was it really nice out their? My family and I are still planning on heading out that way. It's a toss between Mead and Park Moabi. I want to make that run to the gorge over by the needles, but then again Mead is a very NICE! Also my kids want to swim and tube. Not sure how the water will be when I'm out that way April 16,17,18,19, no dobt cold. My kids are like fish and they've been in Kern River in May so I'm sure they can take it. Lol
I'll let you know where I'll end up. Any other info on Mead??

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

i love lake mead, been going there for 16+ years, since i was a kid. we always go to echo bay. i live in vegas now, and still go to echo bay. its worth the extra drive to me, just to be away from the basin and calville and all that rush. plus, echo bay has a hotel and a restaurant with a full service marina. the hotel is older, but does the trick after a day out on the water. i just slip my boat for the weekend then take it home with me when i leave. slip is about 20 bucks a night, hotel is about 100 a night. oh, they have houseboat, pwc, and small craft rentals as well. lots of little coves and beaches, even with the water level dropping. Overton used to be nice, but it closed. you can still head up that way, its usually really calm water and theres some cool stuff to see there too.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

Water temp should be up to 70+ by then. Weather will be a crap shoot, could be perfect, could be cold and wet, could be hot and windy, could be thunderstorms.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

QC.....Thanks, Crapshoot it is.........What do you think about camping over at Park Moabi and riding the river down to Havasu. I would think the water would be a little nicer for swimming down that way. What are your thoughts on this?
