Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

River swimming is Freakin' cold! QC said it best, I check into weather.com for current listings for the week, plus they have a fishometer, which I fiind quite sick!!!, not that the fishometer has ever panned out for me, I guess I am just one who likes to think the odds are in my favor. Born and raised here in Vegas, I have been going to this lake since I was a small child ( 1975 ). April is typically a great month usually you will avoid the drastic heat provided here in later summer months, yet still warm enough to enojy the water and all the surroundings, in my opinion it is an ideal time of they year here @ lake mead. Better April than /August my friend. Unfortunately I will not be out there this weekend as the wifey needs me around, but you can bet on seeing me the weekend after, and so on. you get the drift! Take care sea ya' out there!

Meadfisher.....Thanks for the info. Where would you recommend camping and swimming on Mead? I'm coming out of Orange County. We want to be able to beach my boat and find a campsite. We are going to cruise and tube. Thanks in advance.

The water at Park Moabi is cold year round as it comes out of the bottom of Lake Mohave and doesn't have a chance to warm up until it is settled into Havasu. The water stays cold until you are out of the Topock Wildlife Refuge and all of the way into the Lake. Havasu is typically 2 - 5 degrees warmer than Mead.

I only have one thing to add to Meadfisher's comments about April. I prefer October for a cool month as the Lake water is still sorta warm and it is generally less windy. I have had awesome April days, but that goes back to the Crap Shoot . . .

Sandy Beach my friend or sometimes called Sandy Cove, How would I say,.. Oh here we go, like minded atmosphere, yet kid friendly. QC absoloutly October is Awesome, and a great way to experience the whole lake wihtout all the summer traffic. Ideal for fishing*. Sandy Beach is great sopt for posting camp, sand makes setting up tent and other chores a breeze, nice and sandy easy on childrens feet so they are able to walk right to the waters edge, even though there are typically more than enough adults around to supervise, I always say be mindful they are kids and this is still a lake*but aside from that the wind and rain are your primary concerns, see some folks like ( myself ), will tend to go out and brave the strom anyway, but I strongly advise against this, especially w/ family in tow, as these winds are known to raise 3 and 4 ' white caps with little or NO notice, I have been cauhgt w/o my anchor up in this manner more than once, and it can be tricky, lol nice way of saying dangerous!!!!. But all that sh*t aside, go have fun, its a great lake, and I think you will find the spot I reccommend for you, to you and your families liking, trust me on this 1:cool:

Meadfisher......Thanks for that helpful info. You just help me make up my mind on where to go. Sany cove sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Question for you? Where would I lauch from? and are their stores near by like grocery, or a Walmart for ice, food, etc? Also would I be able to leave my truck and trailer parked for the four days I'll be out their? I appreciate any info you can hook me up with.

Sandy Cove is on the map I posted on the first page Angel. Callville is closest. So close there are some people there, but also close enough to run to if you get in trouble . . .

As far as stores go, well there is the marina which is very near by, like QC explained prior, but no walmart. However they will have most of your typical supplies, I believe Calville Marina even has a website which will probably entail what is carried there, but in my personal experience they have quite a bit, you may pay a few dollars extra for the convienence of the marina, but more than likely find what you need. There is parking near the marina that is free four days is fine, I believe the limit is two weeks but call to verifiy that. Yes, there is a launch ramp alos located near the marina (calville), sounds to me like everything you need is right there.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

Thats funny, I have been going out there as long as I can remember, I have never spent too much time up that way towards Overton. My boat should be out of the shop by mid-week, I cant wait it feels like it has been in there forever, but in reality it has been about two weeks. I am having the entire hull rebuilt, I had rotten stringers and the entire floor was filled w/ rotten wood and soaked foam, lol I was dragging 1000 extra lbs around the lake. But it will be done soon and I cannot wait. I have alsmost completely restored this 1976 tri-hull. She flies all around lake mead. I am ready to go catch some stripers and get some wake boarding in. Well nice meeting you and take it easy, I know I will. maybe Ill sea ya' out there sometimes, my boat is unique and hard to miss, but like I stated earlier I launch at or near Hemmingway, so I usually go to the Arizona side, but even camped there I venture all over.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

Alright guys, your not the only savvy ones on here ;), here is the current info.

However I did find one thing out, I do not launch from hemenway, but 1 launch up from that called boulder! but both are open!

Boulder Harbor Launch Ramp

The ramp is suitable for deep-water launching. The improvement project, replacing old asphalt with 6,500-square-yards of concrete, has been completed. All lanes are open.

Hemenway Harbor

The ramp is fully functional for shallow launching. Larger vessels on low trailers have been successful launching at this ramp. Boats with Deep-V hulls should consider using the Boulder Harbor Launch Ramp.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

I definitely prefer the Boulder ramp, but last time I was on it was about 1118'. Hemenway indeed goes out shallower. Now that Lake Mead Marina has moved to near Hemenway I use it, but it takes more work and a wetter truck.

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

If you guys venture up to Echo during the week be prepared for some waits and muddy roads (not mud-bog muddy, but enough to mess up the truck/trailer/boat). They are reconstructing sections of road between Calville to Echo and Echo to Overton Beach. I drove from Boulder City to Overton a few weeks ago and the construction tacked an extra hour onto the trip. During the weekend it should be OK, but you will be driving on dirt roads for a while until they get it completed.

Another FYI, they are not repaving the sections with bad washboarding (yet?) between Calville and Echo, so you will still need to slow down in those sections.

Gotta say I do envy you guys. I'm stuck using my jon boat until I get my 18'er finished. The goal was 3 months,,, 6 months ago

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

Question.....Can I set up camp at Sandy Cove, are there restrooms, water spickets etc. or do I have to be in one of those designated camping sites off shore?

Re: Lake Mead boat/camp??

There are outhouses at Sandy Cove. One floating nearby and a couple on the beach. Big place . . . No water or campsites on the water anywhere. Extremely primitive with the only exception being the outhouse . . .
