I would not be be daisy chaining 5M strips either if you want the light level of all the strips to be somewhat even. My thoughts on the control box are that its purpose in life is to power multiple strips with the same RGB color levels for each strip. In my case where I just want one color, I would just send each strip its own 12V from the on/off switch.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

This is a really cool thread. Bass fishermen have been lighting their boats with LED for a while now to use at night. I was interested in doing it on my new boat but the only company I know of was a little more than I wanted to pay. It is called Bluewater LED. Only bring this up because when I was looking at their page they had some f=different switches and stuff that they sell separately. I know you guys were talking about that and wanting some options so maybe look at what they have? Also, to the OP, I did a search for some of those lights you described and all I can find is some iffy looking chinese websites. Are there links to where those lights can be found so I can do some pricing? I'd like to do this on my boat for night fishing.

They're all over ebay. You can pick up a waterproof 5M 5050 300 LED strip set with controller and extended remote for around $30 now. I order from China all the time and it's fine. It takes about 10-14 days to get to you, but it's no problem.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5M-300-16co..._Lights_Fairy_Lights&var=&hash=item256f705ceb

Do an ebay search for "RGB LED 5050 300" or the like if you would like the 5050 series with 300 lights per 5M. Also.. there are two kinds of drivers and remotes now.. an extended version and the older style. If you look at the different listings, you'll see. I have them here in my kitchen as ambient lighting and went from the old style remote to the new. The newer remote and driver gives you smaller adjustment increments on all channels, so you can get a much wider variance of colors and are able to find the exact one that you want. It's an extra few bucks but if you're into to, it's worth it.

Word of caution: There seemed to be a huge batch of next gen drivers that went out that had the green and red wires mixed inside. In order to make it work right, you had to pop open the controller and cut and re-solder them. I got one of those. It was no biggie really to fix, but just be aware in case this happens to you.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

ok i am gonna reopen the thread,,,,,,,,
all my rgb's are installed and working correctly, however i do have an extra section that i want to be able to turn on and off(only when everything else is on),,,, so i got a theory on how to do it,,, but i wana see what everyones thinking.

at the end of a run i want to add a section that will light up my white transom.
i have a tall rail to mount on, and a channel to bury them(from other boats view),,,,,, so my thought here is to use my connecter to splice in the 4 wires, but run the black one to a simple on/off switch before proceeding to the new section.
i believe the black wire is the ground and the others are the positives so if i take the ground away from the new addition it should not light up,,,,,, what do you guys think?

also if this theory is correct you could shut off any section with a switch on the black wire that would bypass the ground past the switched section and reattach it to the next section. ,,,,,,,,,, not sure but i am thinking now that enable to bypass a section(in the middle of a run) you would need a switch( in proper position) on both sides of the bypassed section to isolate the ground from the omitted section:confused:
not sure if i worded that understandably,,,
but whadyatink

Sounds like you will be able to do it. You are basically creating a break in the strip with a switch installed. Let us know how it works out for you.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

will do, and thanx for the reply,
not real sure but i believe its the next lil project in line(unless i finish waxin the interior first).
i do have a comment on the connecters we both used. be carefull not to mount the connecters too close to any corners,,,, i had 2 clips give me issue cause i had the 4wire bent right after the connecter attatches to the strip,,, about a week later that section of the strip started flashin when people were moving around on the couch (drove me insane). what was happening was the bend on the wire was pulling the strip (kinda crookedly) away from the fingers that actually make the connection with the strip. my solution was to move the strip about a half an inch to give the connecter room to be straight. i was thinking of putting a lil glue inside the connecter before closing,,,, my silicone didn't hold in there well, undecided for now,,,, but its not blinking anymore either,,lol.

i'll let everyone know how the switch thing works

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

no problem,
not sure what you need. this is my strip attached to my connecter,,, bad pic i know,,, but i think you can make out the lil fingers that i'm talking about
ledconnecters040412006.jpg

so the reason it was giving me issue is i had the end of the connecter pinched at an angle,,, and the bouncing around wiggled it outa place. once i moved it away so that the connecter and wires were straight the issues went away.

this is the interior before i hid the rgb's under an Lchannel on the edge of my L seat

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

heres one of the few pics i have after they were hidden
052912069.jpg

much better,,, smoother lights.
the L channel i used
rgbLtrim007.jpg

and for kicks,,,, all together! ,,,,,,sorry about the blurry pics

052912071.jpg

052912076.jpg

052912075.jpg

my stern is slanted quite a bit and i have the tall rails that are above it where i will mount the switchable on/off rgb lights in a deep channel on the underside of the stern rail.
this should light up my transom nicely,,,,, but i still want the ability to turn that section off, in case it gets me into trouble with the po po,,,lol

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

I am looking at getting these LED lights (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006IWQMHO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&m=AJ0QRPX8ADNI1) for my 17.5' bass boat for night fishing. I am also looking at these two dimmers

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003L4KKF2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&m=A2O3HJ2SS65BTV

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004T9T1XA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&m=A3I6WTXNKA4Z0V

Does anyone have any experience with any of these? Will the one with a remote can any interference with my radio or depthfinders? I also heard there is an audible hummm from these dimmers, is that true?

Thanks and this thread has taught me so much!!

thanks for the kind comment,
i took some L channel to the boat yesterday to check the mounting position and dropped them in the water:facepalm: before i could get it figured out. i do think ill have to have 2 sections,,,, one on either side of the middle rail. but thats not for sure yet.

you should run your fishfinders away from everything else to minimize interference on the unit.

as far as the dimmers humming goes i am not sure,,,
looks like you should be ok with the set you posted, (red is my favorite color on my set), it doesnt look like you need a lil special power supply fitting to plug in to the dimmer.
my set of rgb's came all inclusive,,, the remote has the ability to dim all the colors. and at 10 cheeseburgers more you will have brite white so you can clean up the deck as well, and many other choices to "play with"lol. originally i just wanted red and white but got all the bonus colors as well.
heres my set

under 40 cheeseburgers and all inclusive it was my choice. i did buy connecters as well at a burger a piece
hope it helps

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

I have found that the epoxy coated LED strips are not that waterproof if you have cut the strip. The epoxy is applied on top of a regular strip. Once cut the epoxy tends to start lifting off (even if you silicone the cut area). If the strip is exposed to a more than the occasional splash of water it will eventually fail. A better solution is to use the ones with the silicon tube cover.

To stick the strips in place I use 4200. I place small dabs along the strip. The strip adhesive will hold the strip in place long enough for the 4200 to set. The strip adhesive works for awhile but will eventually come loose, especially if the strip turns or is on a curved surface.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Can't remember if I already said this, but in my experience you need to buy the same color rgb strips. What i mean by that is they are offered in a white and copper color and even in black. The copper strip will give off a little different shade of light than say the white ones.

It makes since because it is basically reflecting the color of the copper outward through the resin or silicone etc. Kinda like a lamp shade.

So just make sure if you are adding mmore led light strips, that when ordering, you order the same color strip so the light is not a different color shining from them.

I am upgrading all of mine for this reason and also going to the 60 lights per meter.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

thanks and agreed, that makes alot of sense for sure. i'll add that i just looked at the strips i ordered before on amazon(to copy and paste the link here) and now the pics they have on it are mixed,,,,,,, some pics of 2 different strips:facepalm: now. so be carefull guys. thats some good info from cc

i was kinda worried about that issue so when i first made my order, so i got 2 of the sets together, and when i finally get all the lights on they will be the same:D. too bad i didnt get like 20 of them connecters while i was at it. i will have to reorder those once i finally get the placement narrowed down for the cabin;)

been busy tonight, i got to tell you all, the switch on the black wire(ground) of the rgb's works perfectly. no need to switch all the wires independantly. anyway i hid the rgb's with 1/4 round under my sternrail.
here is a pic for the one that got me started into the rgb's,,,,, chriscraft254,,, thanks for all the valuable info
