Re: liberator 211 rework

numpux,
The motor is part of my project as well. I have a comp cam for inboards. World castings heads, steel crank and bored 30 over. I have the rebuild kit for my rochester but would rather have someone else do it. I hear they are hard to tune. Never rebuilt a 350 but got all of the stuff. Just one more thing to get done. Don't know what increase in HP it will do?

Re: liberator 211 rework

:facepalm:So I need some help on this one. I have been using the same poly resin and it is a good product. The first can was like a dark green after it cured. the second can was clearish yellow. The first can was dark from the start but the second time i used it, it was about 6 mos old(no problems). The third can was also dark green. The problem is that the third can was a lot older than I thought. About 2-3 years old. The MEKP was new and it did get hard like it should. When I realized it I had only used it for one row of tabbing on one side of stringer. Since it got hard I wonder if it will be OK? Its a shame that I have a heated garage but knowbody that has any boat knowledge to help out. I did get some done this week end. Need two full days to really get it moved along. Hoping to get it done by summer. I was reading in another thread about the gimbal bearing. I think I smashed mine because the shaft is pushed to one side and I remove the engine before pulling the outdrive. In the process I put the shaft in a slight bind, smashing the gimbal bearing. Guess I will have to get the shaft checked as well. Still need to finish second stringer. Glass and seal transom with mat, build a motor mount, hopefully use the exisisting mount on other stringer, build motor, clean, check and paint outdrive, put on deck, carpet and interior, all of it. Little work to do:facepalm: The third pic is my stringer and transom glass. The glass on the transom was from a can that was about 6 mos old and always in a pretty warm garage, maybe 60deg.

Re: liberator 211 rework

Never thought about the housing being bad. I will check and I may need a shaft. Getting it checked this weekend, I hope. Thanks, and I will let you know. I'm still trying to get the two seperated. When I took out the motor I realized I had probably smashed the gimble bearing so I took it out as one piece with a back hoe. Is there some trick to seperating these?

Re: liberator 211 rework

well...u have to ensure it is in foreward gear, remove the 6 nuts, and trim cylinders, then normally i would lift up the outdrive half way up then let it drop breaking the seal...but since u r not connected to the transome u cant use the sudden shock of its own weight...gonna have to b creative...mayb a god sizes rubber mallet,,,and some luck,,,,gonna break my motor in on friday,,,should b a good show lol

Thanks Numpux...I tried the weight and it popped loose. Now the shaft will not let them come apart. The Gimble is keeping the shaft at an angle and won't come off. A little time and energy should do the trick. I hope. Thanks again

Man, as soon as I read this I called. It has not trailer or motor and outdrive. He said the int was good and he thought the transom and stringers were good but the deck was soft. When I saw the open glass work under the deck it made me think that all libby's would have rot. Of course my liberator sank in the back, probably from a leaky transom. It was very bad. But the stringers and mounts had rot but were mostly wet. It would be a great project for someone. My wife thinks I should by it, fix and sell to make a profit. The libberator has a very good resale if its in good shape.

hey guys,
i am new to the forum and just joined the crew with this lib on craigslist..ended up getting boat and trailer for 800 and sold trailer to a buddy for 800 so i basically bought boat for free. bought a mercruiser 350 v8 crate motor with 10 hours on it that was in his aunts searay sundancer that was on blocks for 4 years and hull was trashed. so we yanked it out built a motor stand and she fired right up! just got finished ripping up some of the decking that i need to replace. going to try to glass the plywood and install and glassand resin everything this week hopefully. the liberator paint job is decent, could use a wetsand and polish! got big plans for the boat.
-redo upholstry on front seats and the side walls...rear seat and hatch was redone recently by previous owner
-new carpet in front of boat...want to just paint engine compartment like you have done
-reupholstering all cabin cushins
-some new electronics, stereo, gps, vhf
-my buddy is an amazing welder and fabricator and he is going to make me an aluminum swim platform like they have on baja's and powdercoat it black
-going to redo all the teak
-paint window frame black and a light 35% tint on windsheild

don;t get me wrong i love the restorations you all are doing but i love to customize everything i own and i want to make this lib a little bit different than the others out there.....i fell in love with liberators when i was just a little kid when my dads best friend had one and we spent every weekend on that thing and have loved the lines of the boat ever since. now i am old enough and fortunate enough to have my own that i can make the way i want to.

any suggestions you guys have or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated

***also does anyone have or know the person who owns a light blue 21 foot liberator once named PETTY CASH, had thru hull exhaust with a blue fiberglass swimplatform...that was my dads buddys boat and would love to see a picture of it or know where she is now..

thanks, Dan

Re: liberator 211 rework

Dan, Welcome to Iboats, and welcome to being in the liberator club! Is the hull, stringers, transom in good shape? What year and model? Have any pictures :).

Your proposed customizations sound cool, can't wait to see the progress! I have not see another Liberator named Petty Cash, I live in New England and have actually never seen another liberator out on the water. When I bought mine, I knew that was the model I wanted, and it took a while to find it.

I am currently in the process of redoing the deck from the front seats back. Have ripped up all the old plywood, fortunately for me I don't have any stringer damage. I bought some epoxy supplies from USComposits and will be coating the plywood, and then fiberglassing it in with 1708. Then new carpet, and re-installing the bench and I should be ready for the water.

Looking forward to watching your progress...
Tom

Re: liberator 211 rework

Thanks Tom,

It's a 1985 211 liberator. Stringers are in good shape. I had soft spot in floor so I am just redoing the whole deck on the one side then coating the whole deck engine compartment transom and fuel tank compartment. I pulled the tank and going to clean the as well.

Re: liberator 211 rework

Great sounding boat. Looks like you and I are in the same situation. I am replacing the deck under the bench seat, and the decking in the engine compartment. I have all the deck carpet removed and the parts of the old deck removed, I am contemplating how to re-carpet some of the non deck parts, vertical surfaces around the doors to the cuddy under the steering wheel etc....
