Re: lost boat motor

Still working on this... im getting some crazy tones form a tree where i hit. The metal detector I have when it gets near a large amount of metal it makes a really high pitch tone. It's a pulse inductive MD... meaning that if I keep the head over the tone it will die. The smaller the metal the quicker it dies. The larger the metal the longer it tones out.. it's based of density and what not. Been three weeks so the damage might be serious by this time. I'm going to be up there this weekend and this is my last trip.. If I can't find it I'm going to let it go.

Can't say you didn't give it a fighting chance. Good luck this weekend and let us know.

I know it's hard to walk away (swim?) from lost equipment, but consider the value of your time, times the several hours you have now spent, to pull up a $75 motor? That may or may not run again but guaranteed will need more hours and at least a couple hundred dollars to fix?
3 weeks is a long time for fine grain silt to get in everything. Initially there is the rust issue but now you have another issue that may require more work.
But I wish you the best and you can be right proud if you retrieve it and get it running!

Re: lost boat motor

there's hope for you! This post is from another forum. The river is salt water (not high salt, though), tidal and muddy with sand:

<<<Some of you may know I loss my tweeked 25HP Evinrude overboard on a test run. It spent 3 weeks submerged in the upper Nansemond River.

I recovered the motor and took it direct to Ray Russell in Suffolk. He had it running in no time. Today it starts on the first short pull.

My hat goes off to Ray. PM me if un need contact info. >>>

Thanks Ray

Dude, just buy a new motor. You're spending more money trying to find the one you lost, not knowing if it'll ever run again. Don't be the guy who spends a thousand to save 500.

Dunno - Home C's post above would seem to indicate all might not be lost....unless the motor remains so....

Good luck!

Re: lost boat motor

Got on site this weekend and found her! The water dropped about eight inches and I had my polarized sunglasses on. The handle was sticking out of the mud in about three feet of water.

Got her home, sprayed it down with WD-40. Put gas/oil in the cylinders, cleaned the carburetor out. Pulled it the first time and she started for 10 seconds and died. Cleaned the cylinders out again (white nasty crap pouring out of her...good sign with all the oil build up). Checked compression, compression was strong (150). Pulled it a few times and she was running. Smoked like crazy but she is running, let it run for a good thirty minutes to get it nice and warm. Will be taking it out this weekend (chained to my boat) to open her up.

Here's some pictures of what it looks like.. never give up!;

Re: lost boat motor

Instead of chaining the outboard to the boat why not just bolt a piece of 1 inch Aluminum L bracket upside down across the top of the transom to keep the motor from falling off?

When I had a Honda outboard 10 years ago on my skiff, the screws that clamped it on I was able to padlock together preventing the engine from ever coming loose. They also make a slide lock (master lock?) that serves a similar purpose and is very theft resistant.

That's great! Funny how you always find lost things in the last place you look :)

Glad to hear you found it! I knew it would run again if you did find it. Now keep in mind, a chain will only help you AFTER it comes off the transom again. Make sure the clamp screws are good and tight so you won't need the safety chain. Keep in mind that when you turn the outboard the full thrust of the engine is actually working to push the lower unit sideways and flip it off the transom.

Wow, I just read this whole thread and I was worried for that little motor LOL. It's def hard to walk away from something like that. I am very happy you found it, that's so awesome! Happy to hear it runs too.
