Guys,

Thanks for the input. One more question, how high off the keel point did you mount the bracket? I called a commercial bracket maker and the want the top of the bracket mounted 24 inches off the keel point.

ok, you are saying you need a 25" leg because the boats draft so much???? didnt you realize any bouancy lift from the closed sections of your brackets?

did you guys know what your boatys drafted before you started you brackets?

I have an inboard in my boat right now.... I think in the next few weeks I am going to put the plug in the drain hole and take the boat out and slide her off the trailer into the water and see her posture...makes some notes and marks....and keep them for reference.

for me, Id think id want a swim platform as close to the wayer as possible....but thenk that getting out of the hole it might drag a little....

what do you guys think?

bob
Ya there is bouyancy in the bracket. If it was completely under water mine would just lose to the outboard, as in sink. How it performs real world remains to be seen. ,I have no idea what it drafted before. Biggest concern I have is coming off plane in big water and the back swell swamping it!

Beautiful work man...
Thanks

I am at 28", I may be a little high, time will tell. My cav plate on the motor will be 4" above the keel. Should compensate for swell behind the hull nicely.

Your cav plate should be even with the keel

Not in this case WOG. His tinny is running a bracket which changes all the rules because of the setback. Above the keel is normal because of the "swell" off the transom.

Rule of thumb with bracket is 1" of rise for every 12" of set back, I am a little high for sure, may end up with a manual jack plate set up if it does poorly.

I was not real impressed with the bow cap structure on the Islander, seems a little floppy and doesnt leave a lot of structure for mounting accessories or seem stiff enough to walk on.

Crappy cell pic for sure.
So here is a little modification.

Notched the plywood so it would contour nicely

Going to have to dry fit and trim as necessary to get it to sit down the extra half inch, still gotta cut in the bow hatch, should be way stiffer and give me backing for cleats and trolling motor, also be mint for marine tex to close the old holes up for paint prep.

Yah, I wasn't all that impressed either. I squeezed in a bead of PL in between the skin and "stringers". Really stiffened it up nicely.

Dood, you built a house under there!

Got my self into dry fit and thinking mode, pics tell the story I think!
Pounded a couple rivets in to line the skin up, think my bow cap reinforcement will work good with a little belt sanding to get to perfect fit

ignore the napper

Following the bow theme, just had to see

Think it will work?? Hope so, want to use the stainless bow rail that matches it from Ol Dauntless. anchor keeper thingy will be on the pulpit.

Then I moved on to BATTERY placement and seating thinking,

Will be three batts a side, and a charger in the open spot.
Mocked up a bat/ fuel tank box, lil short on bow to stern length, back of box is where it would end

And yes that is a bucket I may have sat on and made VROOOM sounds on LOL
Tore it all out and laid out some holes for conduit in the floor, 1 1 1/4" side to side (bat box to bat box and 1 going from drivers bat box to rear of boat for engine bat connection.
1 1/4"" holds 4 nice cables

Do some sanding and maybe epoxy tonight!

Oh ya, by the way the napper got her first nap in on the boat and found out that light boat on trailer moving and rolling around may or may not allow you to practice sea sickness:puke: LOL could not believe it:eek::lol:

MD - You are building a tank! Luv the pulpit. And VAROOOM bucket, too. Remember to turn the bucket over for :puke:. LOL

Gonna think out loud here. Maybe move the pulpit aft so it's half on and half off the bow. When a wave lifts the bow the pulpit will be hit with all the force and want to pull down. And maybe I'm over thinking too.

did you replace that bowed wood piece that supports the widest part of your bow cover????if so whats the dimensions? I am having a guy weld shut the key hole in a week or so...and am now negotiating with a guy for an Armstrong bracket....instead of building one..what is the height of your swim deck to the keel?thanks BOB

Ya not quite sure how the pulpit will work out yet, need the top on and set the bow rail up there to line it up, it mounts to the pulpit

Bob, I did not replace that wide piece, just sanded it and I will prolly reinforce with ahhh gasp GlASS, At 23" from keel to top of platform, give or take a 1/2"

The Dauntless rail is gonna look good. I can see some fitting options too since the tinny is flatter at the bow.

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Tonight SWMBO and I sanded the floor pieces on the top side and prepped for epoxy, I also cut the rear piece shorter so that i can have full access to the transom for trim tab install and give the water a spot to get to the bilge long before it could hit the transom ply.
I also cut out two sheets to go in between the stringers to the stern at the old motor mounts. I originally planned on using this space for a rod locker but it is pretty tight so I think I will fill it with floatation foam, it works out to 4"X24"X7'. Under this piece will be wide open allowing for limber hole drainage from front to back. To drain where the step is up front I plan on cutting some conduit in half lengthwise and screwing and caulking it down before I foam this cavity to make a drain shooting the water to the bilge in the back
Lil visual aid

Think its worth doing this? Not a lot of floatation gained but some is better than none there I think!!!!?!??!!?!!
Goal for this week is to get all pieces needed to get the floor done epoxied and ready.
